Roots and Refuge Farm: From Farm to Sea (I tried to be a cool mom) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Your oldest son has such beautiful hair. wowza love it. I also admire how each of your boys all seem to have such different personalities, and YOU as a mom are able to focus on all of them is admirable. Equal time and focus it seems. Your parenting skills are thriving girl.

  2. I live in the North Atlantic coast and beaches are minutes away. I’ve had many beach days, but now it seems the only time I go to the beach is when I want to dig clams or grab some oysters. In the summer I bring the grandkids with me, and they explore, swim and occasionally even help me. I’m sorry you didn’t have the opportunity to go when you were a kid, but I’m glad you are making memories with your children now.

  3. I am at least a fifth generation beach loving gal. My paternal ancestors were mariners and Dad grew up in walking distance to the Pacific and I grew up near the Pacific. I do miss the ocean as we now live in the Mojave Desert in Arizona. So nice you took the boys out for a visit to the sea and loads of fun.

  4. Note for next time- just hold your hand up in the air for a minute the gulls will come from everywhere! 😂
I loved having my children go to the beach! Special memories!😊

  5. We live in Ohio, and travel to the Charleston area at least every three years. My daughter had a destination wedding on Foley Beach in 2020. Talk about a challenge, planning a destination wedding in 2020. I love being next to the ocean or gulf waters, I don’t have to get in the water, just being near it fills my sole. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your family life. I always look forward to your videos!

  6. My brother would have told Ben that the foam was caused by the fish and animals pee (urin) getting churned by the waves. Then he would remind them to look at their own the next time and see if they can make it foam. Lol.

  7. When y’all were at the beach and your son in the red shirt (forgive me for not knowing his name) said water could wipe your house off the face of the Earth and followed it up with a roll dice/Yahtzee gesture and a “yada yate” 🤣 I love it!!

  8. I am not a beach person. I was a teenager when I first saw the beach. I do love shell collecting, though. I have to admit I loved the beach when we were stationed in Guam.
I loved seeing the boys running in the water. Making beautiful memories.
    .

  9. I love the ocean! We go down to Panama City Beach every year and we love it! It’s home away from home to us. ❤ I love watching you all milk too. I’m planning on breeding one of my goats this fall and milking in the spring and watching you just makes me think that maybe I can do it…maybe 😂. ❤

  10. Another interesting thing to think about in regards to Earth's water… If all of the water on Earth were gathered into a sphere, it would have a diameter of 860 miles. This sphere includes all of the oceans, ice caps, lakes, rivers, groundwater, atmospheric water, and even the water in you, your dog, and your tomato plant. (USGS) They also have a really neat graphic if you look up "All of Earth's water in a single sphere!"

  11. I love and miss the smell of the ocean. I live on the edge of Lake Ontario but it’s just quite the same 🇨🇦

  12. Thanks for the trip to the beach. I have not been in years. It was lovely to see the boys. I love your beautiful iris's.

  13. This resonated with me so much. I am from Pittsburgh PA and Its 6 hours to the Atlantic. I am almost finished with my freshman year in College in San Diego CA and It feels like the ocean's presence completes me. I don't think I could ever not live close to the ocean again.

  14. When are those lambs going to arrive? I keep hoping it's time, every time you post. Baby Lambs are one of the world cutest things.

  15. Before I found the garden the beach was my sanctuary. I live on an island in the north atlantic. We have about 2-4 months when you can swim without hypothermia but I have been there in every season. A good thought to ponder is how much life is in the oceans. The biggest and the smallest are in those vast waters.

  16. If I could live at the beach or very close, I would but in NJ it’s not remotely affordable so we live in the country which is nice too but with more bugs! 😂

  17. Impromptu Mom is the best mom❤

I used to wake up my boys super early on occasions saying…. "It's super secret adventure day!" Amd we would go to Disney or St Augistine for the day.

I tried not to ever tell them in advance just in case it didn't work out, I never wanted them to be disappointed.

  18. I've never been a fan of sand or getting in the water. However, sitting near the Galveston seawall and listening to the water, at night, is the most relaxing thing! It may not be the ocean, but I enjoy it.

  19. lol I’m super land locked in Illinois right now. But my baby (19 year old son) is at the Navy base in South Carolina, and MAN I can’t wait to go see him there and visit the ocean. And someday I will have a farm within 10 miles of the ocean …..somehow, some way❤ thanks for bringing us on this little day trip, Jessica. Brought me so much joy.

  20. 3:40 Oh Girl!! I protected my heart from so many dreams, for so many years…. God was good to me and I did get them in the end, but I came dangerously close to missing out on all the blessings of broken hearts and shooting for the moon.
Your Rory Feat Convention talk with Sweer Miah was BEAUTIFUL when you spoke of your CRAZY dreams and Miah quoted the Bible about "exceedingly above and beyond".
I looked out my window and imagined the cross fencing I dream about, and sheep and pigs…. God, please? Exceed my wildest dreams!! Don't let me hold back for fear of breaking my own heart!!

  21. hey Jess, call me a sceptic, but I'm pretty sure grapes are not something Seagulls recognize as a food source from their natural "habitat" 🙂

  22. I live on the shoreline in CT. I lived in Pennsylvania for one year and my heart ached to hear the waves. I dont know how I would have healed after the death of my Son without God, family, waves and dirt.❤

  23. Love seeing your irises!! They remind me of my mom, who I miss dearly. And mine won't be blooming till late May. So thank you ❤️

  24. I'm in Maine, 5 minutes from the ocean. I grew up here. I'm quite spoiled, I know. I love the smell and sound. Don't care much for being in it. I prefer fresh water. My choice has always been a home on a lake or cabin in the woods over a house on the ocean.
