Roots and Refuge Farm: Sowing Seeds and Chatting Gardening (One day there will be order..) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I'm having trouble with roly polies eating my green bean seedlings right now 😐 I found several of them decapitated and them standing on the stem munching away

  2. I do appreciate the heads up about potatoes and p ill bugs. Last year they are everything the slugs didn't eat!!! Any other ideas are definitely welcome. Life transitions, kids graduating….. Are full of emotions. For, each child brings a new breath to the experience. 💙💜💛🙏🙏🙏🐸😎

  3. You might have heavy metals in your soil that the pillbugs are attracted to. They thrive in moist covered soil with decaying vegetation. I have heard that peppermint oil mixed with water sprayed on the plants and top soil will shoo them away. It's a natural insect repellent for aphids and other soft bodied insects. Won't harm bees.

  4. Absolutely the pill bugs repeatedly ate my bean and cucumber seedlings last year, and I got none! This year I didn't put the compost on those beds that was full of the little rollie pollies, so I expect to get a harvest. Being originally a Northerner, and now in Cali, I'm enjoying the Southern influence in your voice these days. Be blessed. Be a blessing.

  5. I have severe tinnitus 24/7 so I can’t hear the cicadas in your video over the shrill ringing in my ears that nearly drives me crazy because it will not stop. 😅

  6. Communication is KEY and That is the Best, with a promise that One day there will be order, and personally, I just have to say HA!!!!!! I have babies popping up in my Green Slalk, and in multiple pots of Zinnias and Marigolds AND Dahlias sprouting some behbehs!, New Growth is Always a Process and so Good to Share! Love You!!!

  7. Pill bugs are mainly detritivores, but yeah, they'll totally munch of some low, tender, plant growth! I have caught them in action! I let it slide though. Usually give them some old salad nearby to munch on. 🥂

  8. Pillbugs ate all of my gomphrena seedlings!!!! 😬 They ate other things too but I was really bummed about those gomphrena.

  9. I just love you Jess! You are so grounded and you make me laugh. Thank you for sharing all the things with us. God bless you and your family 🙏🏻💚

  10. Those feelings that come with your firstborn graduating are real and quite a bit. Went through that last May myself 💕 Will be praying for you all as you move into a new chapter. 😊

  11. I just got my greenhouse set up and I took my tomato starts out of the house and put them in the greenhouse and now they look so bad.

  12. I was told that some places call the cicadas God’s choir and some places call them the Devil’s choir. Anyone else heard that?

  13. It's an ongoing struggle in our house with things never getting put away and then never being able to find anything. I mean who in their right mind walks all the way to another room to put an item away when you can just stick it on the table/counter/sideboard/random shelf ….?!
So, on a shelf in our central sitting area I have placed baskets labelled with the name of a person or location where random items typically need to be returned to. There are also a couple of baskets in the mudroom for items that live outside of the house as well as one for random stuff when you don't know where an item belongs. Everyone is responsible for emptying their own basket and the other baskets get cleared on housework days. For some reason people now feel more motivated to pick an item up and stick it in a basket rather than ignore the messy pile growing on the sideboard and falling on the floor 🙂 For now it is working, who know how long it will last though LOL!

  14. So you are on an easter-egg hunt for hidden seeds? I have done the same, but trying to reform myself! Order in our lives. We dare to dream! The change is difficult. I am right there with you, Jess! Hugs, Zanna

  15. There is nothing as good as watching you and learning so much than when your in the garden planting seeds, harvesting or giving a tour. This was full of so much goodness for a gardener.

  16. My weather is almost always the same as yours, as I live 60 miles from you.
All that to say, I am currently admiring all that flat land you have!

I'm planting tomorrow. Definitely, going to try the potato trick, once my cucumbers sprout!

  17. What an insanely beautiful day! That farm is turning out so picturesque and beautiful sweet Jess.

  18. I have taken photos of my garden starts and I have a couple with "?" On them because I forgot to mark them and planted one just to see what it was. I have 3 like that now. One says "?fuzzy?" 😂

My oldest baby, he is turning 24 this year. It's killin me. My youngest is 14 and he is about to be done with freshman year in high school. He is well over 6ft. David, 14, TOWERS over his 24yo brother Daniel and the rest of us. Child is a giant. So bitter sweet. I know how it feels for you.

  19. Jess . If you have the time I love the toykyo green cucumber from baker Creek. I live in southern middle Tennessee and have tried so many cucumbers. This one is very sweet, thin skinned and hardly any seeds no matter what size. I tried to trellis my first year but . ..they do better if on ground. I DO have a ground cloth on them AND they have shade in the afternoon BUT.. very sweet and awesome for fresh eating AND pickles!! They are never bitter and so sweet. By far..my favorite and I've have tried at least 25 different varieties. I won't plant any other.♥️ Love you girl and your channel.

  20. Northern Ohio here. Pill bugs in everyone of my raised beds and yes, they eat and destroy. I am doing this potato thing this year. Thank you Jess. I do not want a repeat of last year.

  21. Pill bugs have been an annoyance for me, too and everyone told me I was wrong! I caught quite a few with beer traps!

  22. Pill bugs 100% eat seedlings. Pill bugs & Ear wings are the worst in my garden. I will be trying the potato thing. There are so many of them though.

  23. Ok, so those that are claiming that pillbugs/rollie pollies dont eat seedlings are correct, they also eat full grown plants! To anyone claiming they do not eat plants, take a collard leaf, lettuce leaf, brussel sprout leaf, squash plant leaf…any large veggie type "leaf" and lay it in your garden area. Leave it for a couple days then go check it, it will be eaten to shreads and if you pick it up and look under you will have them crawling and munching about on the underside. They can do just as much damage in just as little time as a hornworm!!

  24. I think your tomato starts are being affected by weather … it looks just like mine did and a room on mh house wasn’t getting warm enough at night. I’m wondering if your bigger greenhouse isn’t holding the heat at night
