Roots and Refuge Farm: When Milk Fever Strikes the Home Dairy | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. so glad you now know your animals and can catch symptoms early. Glad Hope is improving and I will send good thoughts for her to make a full return to health. Good to know that it is so treatable and preventable. When we know better we do better right?

  2. We've started calcium bolusing most cows in our herd right after calving. We have a fairly high percenatge of older cows in our herd atm and have found that an ounce of prevention is worth a lot! If they do start to show symptoms another bolus will usually take care of it and not require more drastic treatment like IV calcium which also means better overall health and recovery during that lactation. We just had a calf a couple weeks ago that looks super similar to socks! ❤

  3. Prayers for Hope for recovery and now you know the proper procedures etc. for any future Milk Fever among your herd and flocks.

  4. I loved this!!! As I sit here with one of my little chicks that has wry neck. Syringe in hand and lots of prayers. We named her Ma-tilt-a… 😊. It's what we do isn't it.. We give them our hearts.

  5. A few years ago, I had a few goats that had milk fever. They produced high yields of milk. A vet came out and said if you suspect milk fever throw some tums in a bucket a feed them to the animal. The high calcium turns them right around. I had to ask the vet twice if it really worked. From that point on we always give our girls a herbal calcium supplement during pregnancy and never had a problem

  6. We lost a dog to milk fever when i was a child. We raised her puppies by hand. We bottle feed them every few hours. Then burped them and put baby powder on their bellies. It was very sad. But the puppies grow up to be beautiful and everyone got adopted.

  7. "You give it your all, so you know you gave it your all." That's really the way to approach everything in life, isn't it? I so appreciate your transparency and compassion.
    ❤❤

  8. Again, every season is an opportunity to learn, from successes as well as failures. The key is to learn and improve! ❤

  9. So what is milk fever? Is it contagious among all dairy animals? Can the cow give it to the goat? I am saying prayers for Hope. What about her baby? Does Socks have to be bottle fed now? Please keep us updated!

  10. Hey Jess, I'm so sorry Hope is feeling poorly😢.
    I wish I new more.
    Poor dear 😮.
I hope she feels better soon enough.
    JO JO IN VT 💞

  11. Our first Jersey girl had milk fever with our very first birth as owners. By the time our vet got to us…she was already down and couldn't get her up. He had to IV calcium directly into her carotid. She made it thank God. We have been VERY aware of it ever since. Our current vet now recommends calcium/magnesium bolus pills before they even go into labor. Experience and education are everything. Good job recognizing it!

  12. Your Delilah story reminded me of Todd and Rachel from that 1870’s homestead – when they had a pig that sneezed or coughed every once in a while, and they just didn’t know that was a big deal. They lost that pig & had invested so much time and energy and money to raise it for meat, and then felt terrible that it suffered. We all learn & sometimes the situations like Delilah, they hide stuff so well… Thank you for sharing the “you give it 100% because that’s what you do” message.

  13. If you'll milk both teeth at the same time, they won't kick around because they can't with both hooves at the same time.

  14. The handshake! With my grandboys it is shake the hands old school, hit knuckles, then fly away to the sky with the fingers. The baby does the "knucks" and waves bye.

  15. Wishing Hope a speedy and complete recovery! Loving y'all's secret handshake that's so secret neither of you actually know what it is! 😂 I bless you too, (and you two!) – thank you. Until next time indeed.
