Roots and Refuge Farm: Our new CALF (Eclipse Afternoon & The Slow and Meaningful Way) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. We were in the path of totality but had partial cloud cover and got to see some of the phases. The coolest thing was the darkening , it was totally dark (fortunately no light pollution ) and then minutes later lightened. Some of the chickens went into the coop, others stayed out and roosted on their outdoor perches. Amazing, now we wait until 2044!

  2. Jess, you sounded just like I did. In the morning I drove around and brought all my grown kids glasses. Then I needed to get my grandson from preschool almost at the peak so of course I brought glasses and made him put them on immediately. lol We were 93%. Wish I would have realized about the shadows.

  3. This is one of my favorite Vids! I Love it when you share your family on here! Thank You for all you do! Always so uplifting, knowledgable and fun to watch.❤❤❤

  4. I'm in Cleveland, in the path of totality. I was out working in my yard because we had a lovely 72 degree (F) day. I just hung out while the eclipse was working its way to its peak and as the sky got darker and the house lights came on, someone nearby shot off some fireworks. So, I got a double light show. I could easily see the eclipse while fireworks were lower and to the left of it. It was really neat in a spooky kind of way. Not scary, just kind of eerie. Didn't last very long…about 3 minutes and then everything started going back to normal. 🙂

  5. I was in Salem Oregon in the last eclipse. We had totaltality for that one. We were too far away for this one, but I enjoyed watching what others filmed of it!

  6. We got about 93% totality here and it was so cool! God's universe on display!!! We were planting some garden (South Central IL here) and it got so weird looking. The sky was still bright but everything else was just dim. Came in and got our eclipse glasses and it was just so freaking cool! We took a break to watch. There had been a gentle breeze all day and I had sheets on the line. The breeze stopped. The temperature had been up in the mid seventies and it got really chilly. Probably a 15 degree temp drop. The doves started cooing at each other and all the other birds became silent. Then when we were back to about 50% or a little more of sunlight, all the birds came back to chirping and the breeze even came back. Was just so neat. When I came into the house to get the glasses, it was really dark in here. Felt so weird. I just love this every time I see it. I have seen 3 major solar eclipses in my long life (I am 74) and each time, I just marvel at how ordered our universe truly is.
    Hope's calf is just adorable!

  7. Where I live Windsor, Ontario we had 99.5% so we drove 30 mins out to the county to watch the totality. I will remember that the rest of my life, standing in a random farmer’s field, with a bunch of strangers watching something so much bigger than ourselves.

  8. I collect cows could I get a picture of socks for my collection. I have some cool pictures of cows. I LOVE there oses

  9. Instead of making "Socks" a steer and sending him to freezer camp, might there be anybody who would buy a bull with his mixture of genes? He's such a beautiful animal with his coloring.

  10. Asher was wanting totality? I think you could make a 20 year out date with him 🙂 2044 totality only 3 states but 2045 totality will be a bunch about the same as 2027. So a date in 2045 back in Arkansas or south carolina?

  11. In Carbondale, IL … Where 'X' marks the spot… We were blessed to have 2 Total Solar Eclipses (in the direct path of totality) in less then 7 years (August 2017 + now) … I documented the effects of my chickens before, during, and after Totality this time… So cool! A great experience to witness any eclipse!! Your camera took amazing images! I need to get a better camera… Thank you for sharing!

  12. We drove an hour to Thayer missouri and watched the total eclipse. It lasted a little over 4 minutes and it was beautiful. I finished chemo in January and wasn’t sure I would get to see it. I am very thankful I got to experience it with my daughter and some family.

  13. 80 percent this time kinda like a cloud passed over not nearly as as cool as 2017 totalty and a long few minutes of darkness but still eorth taking time to watch the majesty and glory of God in his creation

  14. There is a convenience of cooking food and not having to trade my time, gas, and energy to go to a restaurant and spend a fortune for a sub par product. Having the ability to prepare food is truly a blessing. I raise a small garden and give extra to my neighbor and relatives. I really appreciate your videos on your farmers table channel and another youtube channel Acre Homestead. You ladies are a blessing.

  15. Ok Jess….
That's the absolute CUTEST photo of you ever!!! It should be on a magazine cover or seed packets or SOMETHING!!!

  16. I make fermented beets juice with mine and when it done I jar up my beets and drink the juice It actually cost me more money to grow my own food I live alone or at least that's what it seems like i spend 3 to 400 each season but i love it im eating better quality food and thing I would NT have the chance to try if I had NT grown it myself I had my hip replacement surgery on the 5 th and my tomatoes shot up fast in just a few days As far as the eclipse i live rifht outside of the path and we had. Shadow s that looked like the wind like we could actually see the wind and there was a spooky eerie feeling that was hard to describe

  17. The occasional conenience is ok but as a culture we have sold our soul for convenience and ease and quick.

  18. Haha! Thanks for the guilt trip! This time of year I'm working 6 and 7 day weeks, and tonight on the way home I had to buy groceries because I have eaten all the meals I had put up in my tiny freezer. I made a decision it was okay to buy precooked food (sous vide chicken thighs, braised grass-fed beef, pulled pork, and artichoke/cheese timbales) so that I didn't spend the whole week eating eggs on the run because I don't have time to cook. Honestly, I don't feel guilty, and I'm looking forward to cooking up some luscious real food as soon as my deadline is past. I got to see the eclipse with a couple clients and other people in my office building. Not in the path of totality, but still very exciting. I noticed our shadows had fuzzy edges but I didn't know to look for the crescents even though I had seen an internet post showing someone holding up their hands with fingers interlaced to see the moon shadows. Love Miah's humor, and that calf is lovely. Those socks are more like hip waders, and I would have been tempted to call him Hippy. Thanks for the fun video.

  19. North west Alabama! Couldn’t see through the Chem Trails sadly. They sprayed us 2 days before and all day durning the event. It got 10° cooler and very hazy looking outside during it. Was so fun and strange at the same time! I do remember the one a few years ago. I did get to see that one!

  20. I live in Texas, so yes, I was in the path of totality! It got so dark during the totality, almost like night! Very cool to witness!
