Roots and Refuge Farm: My Mama Bear Comes Out (Look at the cool garden stuff) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I have reused my party cups for 4 years now. They wash up great !! No different the other plastic pots for seedlings . And way more affordable ❤

  2. 🥺😭 this hit home. This happened to me in your Facebook group. I was so happy my tomatillo plant survive the cold weather but everyone just kept pointing out I only had 1. (I did try and go back to see if they had more at my garden center but i had no luck.) This was very disheartening but bought seeds and told myself next year.
My lonely tomatillo still survives, I left this for the bees. The flowers have now turned to husks. I am going to let it live the rest of its days in the spot its in. (Plus theres always hope that maybe someone near me has a tomatillo.) 😊

  3. ok my EXCITEMENT RIGHT NOW??? I ORDERED A GREENHOUSE THIS MORNING!!!!!!!! 24X48' HIGH roll up SIDES. the snow is nearly gone yeah third growing season here. still working on the dirt…. not soil… dirt

  4. I just have to say that I LOVE it when you get fired up! To hear the sweetest person ever getting on her soap box (truly legitimately so) is just so fun. You go girl! Thanks for all of your inspiration!

  5. I want everyone in this gardening group I follow on fb to see this message. It's amazing how many times a new person will make a post asking advice or sharing their successes and a bunch of people will just crap on them.

  6. If I could give this a hundred likes, I would! I grew too many starts and my living room looks like a botanical garden, while my growing space is just a little decrepit 10 x 20 space. But I am learning to stare seeds, what starts well and the overflow will make my (illegal) backyard chickens happy! Grow on Jessica! Lol 🐒🤘

  7. Still waiting…just got 9" of snow here in Maine yesterday. But it's exciting to be starting seeds indoors! ❤

  8. Please keep being mama bear because I have let so many gardening and homesteading "perfectionists" shame me into not gardening or not doing the thing because I don't have the means to do it as perfectly by the book as they do. Luckily, I'm going on 3 years in and am only just now getting to the point where something is better than nothing. So this year, I started my seeds in solo cups instead of colorful boot strap farmer pots and I bought garden beds off Amazon instead of getting vego beds and I used Amazon boxes to line my beds even though there is ink on them. What do you always say? Start where you are. Do the thing to the best of your ability or don't… Just do the thing!

  9. Have you heard of the 4 gates of speech? They are- is what I am saying true, is it necessary, is this the appropriate timing, and is it kind. I try to filter what I say thru those gates. I know I would prefer if those speaking to me did the same. I just got 2 nanking cherries! Looking forward to seeing how well they do in my soil here. I just started seeding brassicas, I have tree seeds germinating, the first of the peppers are up, I have so much anticipation for the growing season!

  10. Well said Jess..I don’t grow in mass like you, it’s only hubby and I but I’ve used whatever I could plant in. “ if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.

  11. Thank you Jess, you get it! It does discourage someone especially when we are stepping out to garden and it is already so overwhelming. You can be my Momma Bear anytime or I will give up. It's hard to do what you have no clue what to do. Thank you!

  12. Bless your heart Jess, you are an inspiration to new growers, and you were to me! I did the toilet paper rolls, egg cartons and reused food containers! I reuse 4 and 12 packs but still have my plastic cups that I was and reuse every year to pot up! I wish people who don’t grow their own food or reuse anything would keep their snarky comments to themselves! Peace and blessings!

  13. I grow basil in my aerogarden! I have some genovese growing right now and some purple opal just started!!!
    Yes, i get that excitement!!

  14. Amen Jess! I'm slowly investing in long lasting pots but still use the heck out of the pots my plants come in. Do what you can

  15. ❤ your garden is looking so good! I’m most excited because we just finished a new section of garden with raised beds and an arbor! It’s beautiful. Also I’m trying out growing ginger and turmeric this year 😁

  16. AMEN Sister! I found you because of your video where you used the clear plastic box as a green house for lettuce and the kiddie pool garden. You hit the nail on the head with the pointing out a problem, provide a solution. Doesnt have to be the right one, doesnt have to be one that is used, but if you take the time to tear down, take the time to build up.

  17. Very true what you say. When I made a video, I'm toasting or Tortilla. It was dark brown, which I like and my family likes. And someone said to me in a comment. How can you eat that? It's nasty. And so I made the video over again and explain that I like dark brown bubbles and a Tortilla and I can eat it.And it's an individual choice. My theory is, if you can't be positive in a comment then don't say nothing at all and then.Eventually I took the video down because the woman who commented got really openly and I had to report her. Like you said, whatever you find interesting is what you like to video. And it's not for everyone who ever videos. Anything at all but you have great knowledge. And I like to share what I know and people are always gonna be NIT picky. Justice people will always be prejudice and to me.That's not a true.
Nice human being or way of living. Your plastic cups you will use until they disintegrate. Or crack to pieces whereas people who use those same cups for one time use. Throw them in the garbage and it's sad. So at least when we all use plastic cups for planting, they're used for years. If they're in a good condition and not one time use

  18. I just stopped by to say …when you call me darlin and say God bless you it heals my soul in some way ❤

  19. It's crazy how mean people have become. Last year my incubator I used for 10 years finally broke and I went to a homesteading forum to ask for suggestions on a good model to buy. Everyone assumed I was just getting started and told me I had no business hatching chickens because it was too hard and I would kill them all because I didn't know what I was doing. I couldn't believe it. I quickly left that forum. My neighbor wants to start homesteading and I am so excited to help him get started. The more the merrier, I say!

  20. Thanks for sharing your big picture, it helps us all think more holistically!!!

You ARE the person who musters my gumption!!! You have supported me to find my solutions my way! Through a massively traumatic time of life❤

May we all find our solutions🎉

  21. You tell'um Jess! The plastic police have been put in their place! Next question, how do they make electricity for electric cars and what are those batteries made out of again?
