Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I don’t care for quick, short videos. Please don’t fall down the quick short video rabbit hole. Sure some sprinkled here and there are fine. Please don’t let them take over your regular longer videos. I enjoy you, Miah and your kids and all you do on your homestead/farm.

  2. I would love to see from harvest to shelf on the farmers table. More in depth videos on how you harvest, the ways you prefer to preserve (canning, freeze drying, dehydration, leaving for fresh eating) and then storage. I’m 24 and have been working on my garden and granny skills for the past 4 years. You have inspired me the whole way and I have learned so much from you!

  3. When I first started foraging mushrooms, I found the local mycological society forays a really good way to pick up reliable local knowledge and train my eye. You’d be surprised what you can’t see until you know it’s there. There’s one in the SC upstate region, that might have some overlap.

  4. Best wishes on the grand opening of the market tomorrow Jess. Your the perfect host for the market ❤

  5. We haven't finished our Greenhouse yet, so we planted seeds on shelves in our barn with lights and heat pads. They were doing great, we checked on them every day, but two days ago something (mice, birds) got into our starts and ate everyone down to the stalk. Now we must start over. My Hubby put mouse traps out and only caught one mouse. Six starts may come back, but so discouraging.

  6. As a suggestion for your short-version cooking videos, I think it would be useful and fun to know how to incorporate basil or other herbs in dishes.

  7. Love the latest one on Mayo. I am in the process of trying to learn to make tortillas, it seems so easy but they aren't coming out right. If you know how to make them, I'd love to see a video from your perspective.

  8. Thank you Jess again for blessing me this morning with this beautiful video from you❣️❣️❣️ you really do bless my day, my life, my world♥️

  9. Big Hugs Jess!! Seeing you in that tank makes me so jealous haha. Here where I’m at in the Midwest we had 70° a few days ago and snow last night. Ugh!!!

  10. I like your long videos too. 😢 I actually like to hear you talk because I'm autistic and some days I'm selectively mute. Some days I don't want to talk but I want to hear and adult. That adult is you. So the Mayo video was insanely short. Regardless I'll still watch. ❤

  11. Hello sweet one
I love you in your little linen dress and apron. Trudging thru your mushroom forest. So majestic. Such a beautiful sight to see and my heart bubbles with hope for my own magical mushroom forest one day. Good luck to your special Thursday. I pray to one day get SC and meet you.
Love you and your big dog Bear.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful farm with me. And as always thank you for being you Jess. 🤗 ❤

  12. I apparently need a how-to video on making artichokes in any way because every time I attempt it I fail. I am a pretty accomplished cook and they evade me!
Also, I always laugh when I am struggling to think of what to make for dinner because if I just auto-pilot make something 9 times out of 10 we are gonna have either parmesan-crusted chicken or pork chops and roasted veggies. Apparently, that one was ingrained in my brain!

  13. You can do short little videos on tips and tricks to growing things or cooking. You can also do informative little videos on cool things we might not know about certain farm animals.

  14. Fake morals….. sleeve of crackers, egg or two. Can of cream of mushroom soup… mix together. Drop by spoonfuls into hot oil fry…. Yummy when you just need some fried mushrooms

  15. Best of luck with the Farmers market. Hope you will give us a glimpse of it when it gets going.😊
