Asparagus growin wild in SWVA?

Was walkin my property this afternoon, first real nice day. I've lived on this property since 11/22/2021. I stumbled across what looks to be, and Google says to be asparagus, purple and green. It's almost in a row, about 4 feet apart, but all in weeds, covered in leaves and brush. It's near where the bad type bamboo is trying to take over(been hackin at it) an a pine thicket. I don't have a garden yet(medical issues came up) but asparagus was/is on the list I want to grow, it's number two, to brussel sprouts. Imma do the Google thing and get as much info as I can, buh, I've a terrible green thumb, and survived brain surgery twice last year, so still healing. If anyone has any advice, dos an don'ts I'd sure appreciate it. I'd love to keep these and even future sprouts alive an harvestable.

    Certainly looks like it!

But the asparagaceae family is large enough that I would be wary of ever trying to eat that. Many plants in the family are toxic

Always used to pick ditch asparagus by my grandparents. Of course, now the county tends to spray.

  3. I’ve seen it growing wild in an arid part of B.C. – makes me assume it’s drought resistant.

Any of the toxic members of the asparagusceae family look much different than the edible plants. Agave is considered toxic & part of the family yet they make tequila out of it. Go ahead, eat it!

Certainly.. free asparagus. Tip.. do nothing but harvest frequently! Wash, eat, and repeat!! I do this all summer on my grandpa’s farm. The side of the ditches are filled on his property. I’m spoiled he also has some old varieties growing that have been there for over 40 years. Most are very hearty. I think of him every time I slice one down with his pocketknife!

It looks like asparagus to me and I would not hesitate to eat it (but I’m not telling you to – if you’re unsure don’t eat it). To me, this patch you found tells me that a seed escaped and propagated away from where it originally was, or there was a garden that someone at some time had planted and this is just coming up on its own. I found a patch on our farm when I was a kid that we hadn’t planted. We also found some growing on the roadside.
