Gary Pilarchik: Spring Crops, Frost Tolerant Plants, Watering, & Designs 3/22/24: Garden Ramblings Tips & Tour E-18

Cool crops can take a frost and even freeze. Many of my cool spring crops are up and growing, broccoli has been placed for future shade cloth use, the fruit trees and berries are flowering. Slow and steady, and the garden is getting in shape.

Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

  2. Gary… What do you do with all this produce that is extra or you can't consume in a season? I can't imagine you and your family eats everything…just curious..

  3. Over 100 pea plants you said. Ummm, how many people you feeding? No wonder 2 to 4 plants I only get such a small amount?

  4. I have a raspberry cutting and a bunch of bare root strawberries. Can they go out now and still be ok with frost?

  5. Jealous of the green grass and everything that you have growing. In western MN it has been very warm but dry. Now winter is coming back here with a vengeance. Its hard to know when to plant because of the weather extremes. I thank geoengineering for that. Thanks for sharing and all your info.

  6. I put a little milk jug with the bottom cut off and top cap open over my peas.. they were getting very frozen. They are very happy now.

  7. We went down to 23 here last night and everything looks ok. I was a little worried. I'm glad to see you're putting in brassicas already. I just put my first crop out for a few minutes today to start the hardening off process and hope to plant next week.

Do you have any problem with allium minors down there? I have a real problem in my garden in late summer and fall and see a lot of the UK gardeners I follow having problems over there also. I'm going to try covering scallions and leeks I plant for the fall and winter this year and see if it makes a difference.

  8. Everything looks great! I'm doing like you this year, really focusing on the things I like and use the most. Tons of peas, onions, carrots, potatoes…even trying celery and sweet potatoes for the first time. Always an inspiration seeing your garden! 😊

  9. Hi Gary. Leaves have sprouted on all but one of my trees, a Bing Cherry, and my apple trees are blossoming. It has leaf buds, so any time? I started spraying my trees with Immunox a week ago. There are cedar trees on my property, and all around it, and they are all infested with cedar gall. I try to pull the galls down when I see them, but I can only reach so high. That also limits how high I can spray. That being said, I am going to try to keep all of the trees in my orchard pruned down to 10 feet tall. I just sowed Vulgare Oregano, Parsley, Chicory, Yarrow, Catnip, garlic chives, and Imperator carrot seeds in time for the rain. My onions are large enough that I need to start transplanting them into my raised beds.
