I thought I had been over worrying about frost and then, last night, we had a frost warning and I took the tomatoes I was hardening off inside. Thank God because we definitely got a frost for a couple of hours and the potted marigold seedlings are showing signs of exposure. Do you think they'll bounce back?
Gary, I suggest you remove the rhubarb flowers to keep up stalk production.
I'm in Maryland and have found that rhubarb really appreciate some share in the summer. Cucumbers and tomatoes shade them at the right time. I harvest spring through fall Friday.
You plant so much stuff Gary. Sometimes isn't it overwhelming. You should really take some of those starts to a farmer's market and sell them. Others would love that. I understand how easy it is to just plant plant plant, but you can only eat and preserve so much. I wish I had more room so I could plant enough to feed my family of 6. But I do the best I can.

Last year I pulled out my broccoli kale and cabbages and the cabbage white butterfly moved on to the pac Choi and mustard greens. The harlequin beetles will eat them too.
Is it too late to start potatoes? I’m in Northern Virginia and today is April 22nd.
30 degrees last night down the road from you in Montgomery County. Ice in the birdbath. The forecast was 39. Tomato and pepper starts from the cold frame are fine because I bring them inside any time the forecast dips below 40. So your advice on that is good. And your garden looks great!
I'm thinking of trying globe artichokes if I can find the plants. I'm thinking it won't be easy so might have to get seeds next year. I love to eat them and think it will be fun to try growing but not sure if they will survive the winters here. I think I may be just a little colder than you.

Gary, I have to say you had me cracking up, "do as I say, not as I do", not protecting your plant from the frost. (Frost has been bad here in the PNW also.) I think we've all done that. That saying reminded me of my grandmother.

Rhubarb also just seems to like being split and relocated, especially when it’s been there a while. I split a failing rhubarb patch that was there when I bought the house and the new batch is thriving

I only have a Thousand square feet available for my garden space, small, but I'm happy I have any space! I grew up on a Farm, we grew Acres of food to feed our family, I used to have two acres of my own, but life took a turn and I am now on a rented lot that is very small. 😊

Evening temps in 30’s & some spots below freezing in MA /6b this week. Aaaaaugh
OMG. Blackberries are NOT garden friendly in my area. Far north Pacific NW below the border. Every garden I've had up here I get volunteer blackberry thugs. You could not ever convince me to GROW a garden cultivar, even if I had a pool size grow bag. They spread by seed and roots/runners. I love them…out in the woods and the road sides. We have 2 1/2 acres of blackberry brambles and assorted wild berries to deal with at my son's new home. No idea how. 😂.
Hi Gary, are the cicadas coming again for you this year? I remember they damaged your blueberries a few years ago. I saw on the news it is a big year for them?
Growing zones are *wild*. My cool weather crops have all bolted or been harvested and used already and I'm getting ready to put in nightshades this week, and I'm horribly behind on a few things because of a bout of pneumonia and putting all my functional time into plant sales. I have to start my cool weather crops in August to plant out in September or October, if not earlier, and while I envy you the spring growing season for all those lovely brassicas I don't think I'd trade for the fact that if I'm willing to really baby them I can grow tomatoes and peppers as perennials. (To be fair, I'm not, I usually take them out in late November or December, but I could, and I get a looong, glorious growing season for them.)
