I never thought they would get leggy from heat. I continue to learn something new every day.
I have leggy seedlings and am doing all the βrightβ things. I find when I pot them up they take a bit longer to move on to the next stage, but eventually produce.

It's Not Mother Nature, it's the Dept of Defense, with their Geoengineering. I found 100's of Patents dating back to 1890's! Just saying, don't blame Mother Nature, this is Human Hubris.
I had lettuce planted out in a green stalk and they all went leggy! It has been extra cloudy so this makes perfect sense!!
I never would have thought those tiny little Thyme seedlings you were holding are considered to be too 'leggy' . To me they look like good little seedlings. I've been gardening for a while and still have plenty more things to learn apparently π.
I'm really envious of your greenhouse, Luke! I have a really tiny, inexpensive one that I used for my seedlings last spring, but it's not very useful the rest of the season. My windowsill is full of seedlings now, eager to jump into the garden! Containers, fabric pots, 5 gallon buckets, railing planters – I'm filling everything this year, LOL! Best wishes to you, and thanks for the video!
Thank you! Iβve solved the leggy problem with most of my seedlings, but the turnips were not responding. I think I may have left them on the heat mat too long after sprouting.
When are you getting more bootstrap products? ππ
Did we just become best friends?!?
More room for Activities!! πππ
I totally get the reference!πβ€
I have utilized a small, inexpensive greenhouse for sprouting as the days get warmer, and for more tropical plants like moringa and lemon trees. As long as I opened it at least a little in the morning, the plants seemed to like it. I finished off my tomatoes and peppers in there last year.
As far as the seedling mats, I decided this year to take the plants off as soon as I saw anything come up, even if there were more to come. This seems to help. I had a lot of problems last year, but it was my first try.

Thank you so much!!! – Julie
I appreciate the reminder about the best temperature of 60-65 degrees for seedlings. I'm seeing some leggy seedlings (not all thankfully) and realized then that I can't make it easy on myself by keeping my germination cell trays in the same area as my seedlings due to excessive warmth. Just moved some trays to more appropriate areas– thanks! π
Nitrogen in your seed starting mix can also make your plants leggy.
Thanks so much for your video! I'm learning a lot and never realized that too much heat could have a negative effect on my seedlings. I'm looking forward to your next video.
I have green house envy.
I love ALL MIgardener videos!
What is a good tool or method to spot water seedlings. I have trouble spot watering without damaging the small plants. Do you have a video about that?
Very timely right now, I have a bunch of peppers and tomatoes started waiting on the weather to go out in the greenhouse. Unfortunately the weather isnβt going to cooperate, I have a bunch of full water containers to help regulate the warmth but it is going to be too cold to move them out of the house until next week fingers crossed.
Luke, when and how much should I fertilize my seedlings?
Another great video Luke!
They should call it a "pre-germination mat" instead of just a heat mat.
Nice video
My iceberg lettuce seedlings I started inside are super leggy and falling over. Can they be saved? Iβm in 6a Chicago. Love your enthusiasm and down to earth approach to gardening π©βπΎ
Good points! I need to pot up some of mine before they get like that.
my tomato seedlings are quite a bit behind there about 3 weeks old
Activities….like army men…or step class??
Well not be a downer, but the name of the video is "What to do with leggy seedlings" not why.
I have the leggy seedlings part down! It's what next to do with them π
I rolled the dice with my first batch of 800+- tomato starts in Seattle, praying for unusual sunny March/April for my greenhouse plants. I watched this video closely to see if there was anything else I can do to avoid legginess. π
So how do you keep the seedling warm thru the cold nights?
So much room for activities!! One of my favorite lines to use when given the chance. π
Yes my seedlings π± got leggy and flopped on me. Iβm not giving up Iβm just gonna start new seedlings π±.
This might be a silly question…. what are the signs your seedling is getting too much light?
When I have leggy seedlings I bury them deeper , up to the leaves. That gives them a chance to strengthen. I've had great success doing this.
So much room for activities!!!
Haha βso much room for activitiesβ. I love when I get to say that line
We struggle with heat and germinating seeds. We germinate seeds in a far corner of the room where our wood stove is, so it stays pretty warm (and don't have to use heat mats). 90% of the time it's great, when we have spotty germination, it's hard to manage.
Yay! One of my big questions! I'm so glad you answered! β€
β€ Yay! My big question! Thanks for answering!
Luke you are such a motivator. I'm laying here watching YouTube at 9:30 pm and just jumped up to go check my seedling. Did some switching around and got them off the heat mat and did some spot watering. Thank you so much.
So why does seedling germinate, then just stop?
My trays don't look full like yours. They have some healthy seedlings, some pods that are empty (nothing germinated) and a lot of germinated seedlings that just sit with their seed pod on top of the first leaves… and stop growing.
I use cocoa coir, vermiculite & perlite for starter soil, I bottom water with Mosquito Bits Tea & lighting is at 16 hrs (on a timers with the fans). Temp is 75Β°, and seeds are yrs 23-24.
I do over seed for this reason but its frustrating.
Mosquito Bit Tea has been the only way I don't get fungus gnats infestation. I water the trays with it 1x a week, other times its plain water.
Thanks Luke!!
