MIgardener: Quick Seed Starting Tip! #gardening #garden #shorts

  1. 4th year gardening here. Just entering my 4th decade.
Started with plastic trays and solo cups the first few years, which worked well enough.
Expanding peat pods last year, which worked great, yet was expensive.
This year im punching out soil blocks.
All of my tomaters are in 2"*2"*2" blocks, with a fan blowing over the top.
Its made a big difference keeping algae and gnats away, in comparison to years past. i keep a little journal, and its helpful for instances like this.

  2. Going to start this it's a great space saver too. I think it will be so much quicker on moving up day than pricking out. I've been eying those 128 and 200 trays from bootstrap farmer this week.

  3. I found that starting in plastic cups works best. Arrange them in a tray, net like tray or basket, which allows the tray to be submerged in a shallow tote bin. The rootball can grow bigger and faster because there is more soil. You only have to transplant once after they get about 12-18inches tall. You don’t have to worry about your seed starting tray drying out or fiddling around to pop one out while not damaging the other 71 seedlings

  4. I know from experience how good this advice is. The seeds I start in trays have almost a 100% germination rate, while the ones I start in outdoor pots or in the ground are hit or miss.

  5. I got a question about soil.
So, I bought a bag of miracle grow soil and a couple of weeks later bugs hatched in it. I like the ideal of making my own soil. Sounds like coco coir, perlite and compost. But, do I have to worry about bugs hatching in the compost?????

Also, I don’t have space outside, so it’s inside pots for me.

  6. Reusable 2 by 2 cell are best in my opinion. For holding on to enough moisture, not too much moisture, and just big enough for healthy roots to keep them going a few weeks before transplant. My preference.

  7. Burpee 2×2 cells are best. They come in many options for how many cells you want. They are reusable forever also.
