Japanese Garden

Secret, Reflection, Tropical, Bonsai & Japanese Garden Tours – Heathcote Botanical Gardens

A plant nursery on Heathcote Street in Scarsdale, New York, was the earliest seed of what has grown and blossomed into Heathcote Botanical Gardens.
Like many New Yorkers, the business was transplanted to Florida. In 1960 owners Jim and Mollie Crimmins moved the business from its original Florida location on west Orange Avenue to its current Fort Pierce site on Savannah Road.
Then in 1972 the Crimmins moved their family home from Delaware Avenue to the nursery site. Now known as Heathcote House, the Crimmins’ home was built around 1922.
Today the Frame Vernacular Style structure sits graciously amid old live oaks. Its second-floor balcony, Dade County pine floors, and quaint fireplace all add to its charm. It presently houses administrative offices. In 2001 the City Commission passed a resolution to designate it as a Historically Significant Site based on its architectural characteristics and ties to the life of the community.
Heathcote Botanical Gardens consists of an assortment of specialty gardens including a Japanese Garden, Reflection Garden, Herb Garden, Rainforest Display, Native Plants Garden, Secret Garden and a Palm & Cycad Walk. These areas convey an atmosphere of individual garden rooms. Through this type of garden design, you will sense the intimacy of this unique botanical garden. Gracing the areas in between these specialty gardens are borders of flowering shrubs, bulbs, trees, vines and other assorted herbaceous plants. Niches found throughout the garden provide varied microclimates, which allows the use of a wide variety of plants ranging from those found in Mediterranean climates to the Tropics.
Heathcote Botanical Gardens is located on the southeast coast of Florida, in USDA PLANT HARDINESS zone 10A, and has both native Florida flora as well as exotic flora from around the world. It is uniquely situated in a biological transition zone between a warm-temperate zone to the north and a subtropical zone to the south. A transition zone contains species that are characteristic of the adjacent region to its north and south, as well as species that occur only in the transition zone. In the botanical world this is advantageous because it allows for greater diversity, which means that one may grow many kinds of plants from around the world that live under conditions associated with three climatic zones.

I think we’ve basically called all of them out these over here are the willow leaves and look at this huge structure that’s beautiful oh there’s another Bogen Vila looks like they’re just now training it see how they have the metal to train it in the way they want

To I guess they also protect it with electrical tape I will say this is probably one of the prettiest Gardens that we’ve been toach oh how to do the bons size nice more of the same Willow Lea Green Island huh now it’s just about just taking nice look at

Everything I love all the wooden features they have in here and all the stone that’s holding up the Bon size oh another lizard oh there’s like a whole family of them catalog where you at Cog huh you want to say hello to the family of lizards yeah I do like how they have

These water features tucked in okay look at this fogan vilia it has blooms all over it kind of like the vine up front I like how they train those into bons size seems like they have some kind of group thing up here yeah The Crate Myrtle it is

Deciduous it does lose its leaves in the winter another water feature like a half moon shape Kella come on get get get out of there silly they’re going to steal your dog je um so I didn’t know that I thought all Bonsai were ever green I didn’t know they did deciduous

Bonsai a boat oh it’s like a scene yeah nice that’s awesome kog no get he’s like I want to see you hear that lady she said she was going to steal your dog anyways that does conclude the Bonsai area that was amazing we’re going to continue on

There’s just so much more In Bloom than the other Gardens we’ve been here in Florida in the winter so which way are we supposed to go oh yeah look at that over there isn’t that beautiful In Bloom the last Garden we went to not a lot was in bloom

But we’re in February now so that’s beautiful I’m not sure what that is though I’m sure someone will know oh my God look at the giant blossoms on this tree I’m not sure it might be a bush how beautiful there’s so many interesting plants look at the Bloom on this looks

Like a furry pink caterpillar or mauve caterpillar those are so neat so so this is the front sector here they have a nice sitting area and look Jeff you can take a bath here they got a cast iron tub and all these beautiful plants with their different colored

Foliage now some of these don’t have or they do have the plant tags but they’ve been washed away I guess they put them by the sprinkers so you can’t read them anymore oh Kellogg look there’s a kitty cat all right we’re going to continue on this way

We do have a lot to see so I’ll try not to make too many stops we’ll just kind of walk and take a look the airplants again and then right here we have the fulls size umbrella tree this is not a bonsai compared to the last patch of

Bamboo we saw this is nothing that last patch was huge oh yeah look at the roots is there is that roots of the airplant yeah look at that it’s on a metal sculpture very neat wow there are definitely a lot of palms and tropicals here ferns all the

Way in the back what is this like this for your garden oh yeah this would be amazing for the garden and then they have zelas here thank you so they have an avocado here it seems like they’ve already cut it down but New Growth is come from

It huh interesting I don’t see any avocados on it though oh there’s a bigger patch of bamboo but still does not compare to the other they have some U here is this the Japanese garden well that was kind of like the one at the other botanical gardens in Gainesville

Definitely make my garden look like this oh wow what kind of tree tree is that has looks like multi stems or I don’t know if that’s Roots it’s very unusual and look how big the canopy is this is a nice little tucked in area fan palm oh a little place someone could

Read a book if I could have a piece of property like this I wouldn’t even want a home on it just just a garden that I can come to or live at visit whatever okay well that was it for the Japanese garden they cannot enter that way another bota that was the Koy

Pond and it just Loops back around this way to the Bonsai yeah I really do like the Bogen Villa Bonsai it’s beautiful they do have different colors but they’re using the pink here in this Garden okay oh look at all the brick work done here it’s beautiful oh there’s the kitty

Back towards the front so let’s go this way oh there’s another one of those plants with the beautiful blooms look at that I love the colors has that soft pink and then the darker maroon is that a lily tree looks like it see I love that fuchsia got the bird of paradise plant

Here kind of looks like a banana you can tell with the blooms there that are coming out very unusual the Croton this is Morty from Southeast Asia that’s a whole hedge of them they have more croons over here mixed in with Palms I love that old

Cabin look at that uh porch how they use old wood it’s like a Pioneer’s cabin Pioneer house and then these are all the herb gardens oh look at the herbs they have pepper which is not really an herb dill mint and that’s parsley even though it’s

Not labeled I grow that so I know Italian parsley here the flat leaf look how big it’s gotten wow kind of reminds me of celery and I’m not sure what this is this is oh Teragon and they have Thai Basil in the back along with the regular basil and

Cinnamon basil and a patch of finnel and cilantro wow look at the cilantro flowering uhoh they got strawberries in the pot that’s look how big and juicy that looks that might go missing now wouldn’t I wouldn’t do that there’s tons of them so they have a rose bush here beautiful red color oh

Noam now this is or can be used in salads the flowers I’ve eaten the flowers before and the leaves and also made a tinure from this it’s good for it’s like a natural antibiotic it’s good for colds and stuff like that you have Mary Golds there the

Greek oregano thyme lemon thyme I think that’s Lavender in the back another rose bush and over here they have some chives Rosemary uh Cuban oregano and Sage I have a pretty extensive herb garden back at home but I don’t have all what grows here big toad

STS on there look at all the mushroom that are growing up there here’s some growing low and COG there he’s like it’s my step oh they are pretty hard oh really hard cool I want to check out this cool cabin historic replica 1880s Pioneer house I think it

Was built in April 2002 the best thing about the cabin in my opinion is the porch I love how they did natural wood railings here all the way around and of course you got to have the nice cool old rocking chair wow look at this door

Okay let’s go in and take a look oh nice fireplace oh look at the walls they’re plastered with old newspapers and got some old gardening equipment pickaxe some shovels a rake more stuff down here oh how cool I love old cabins oh look at some of these grinding and kitchen

Oh look at that old quilt do not touch that oh and here’s the bedroom with bunk beds and an old steamer’s trunk okay very neat I think the place does close at 4 so we don’t have that much more time let’s go ahead and continue on

I don’t think we have a lot more to see are you learning anything at the Outdoor Classroom you’re the only student what is it a stump didn’t know what the top was oh it’s a hat with a feather in it seminal cheeky Hut that’s pretty cool Trail around I like the roof

How they’ve used the Palm frons that’s way cool wonder if it actually keeps the rain out oh yeah it looks pretty sealed in there wow there’s so much to see here it’s hard to know which direction to go in oh there’s something over here too a vegetable garden seems like they have another

Seating area with a kids play area this is a children’s garden vegetable garden okay do we want to start over here then where you were headed Enchanted Forest Enchanted Forest yeah that sounds like me let’s go in the Enchanted Forest oh actually it’s called the enchanted trail with the ferns

How unusual oh look at this that’s cool oh how nice everybody needs one of these in a fairy Garden we’re not going to loop back around cuz the word Garden is next oh another Gnome Village here inside of a barrel I like how they did that and Kellogg in the mushroom trying to catch the Gnomes did you find any gnomes don’t eat them they

Don’t want to be eaten no eating gnomes Kellogg oh a butterfly oh it was striped like a zebra how cool I’ve never seen one like that oh my God look it’s a panda bench so for those that might not know my other channel is actually called

Pandemonium oh my God I got to get a picture of Mumu too bad the sun is facing the wrong way I love all the benches here actually they’re all the mosaic nicely done we just have this big open field I think they’re actually plants that they’re propagating and maybe

Selling nothing much over here and their pile of compost this leads back to the Children’s [Applause] Garden love the thick canopy that they have here it’s nice shaded garden and I like how they’ve used the old top ties just along the Garden Path Edge look at it they have a bug Mansion

Here got some creepy creepy bugs beetles oh that’s a scary look at Hornet but yeah it’s pretty cool a place for the bugs to go in the winter well I guess they can live in there year round there is a b box here these need wild

Places I’m not sure if you can read that but if you want to pause and read you’re welcome to it next we’ll be looking at the vegetable garden planted and maintained by Garden Club of Fort Pierce together with Heath coat Gardens H now remember it is winter season so oh look they have

The black ey Susan vine at the fence this first bed here they’ve got kale and onions growing and the next bed is a green Comet oh it’s broccoli okay and then they’ve got eggplant growing here oh those look a little rough at the end and then what’s that

Okra it’s going there another pepper plant what is this how does that look like honeysuckle I’m not sure what that is but it’s variegated nice little shady area under this shade tree this tiny shade tree all right so they have another planter with peppers in it they have bib lettuce

Growing two rows then that looks like broccoli again we got Tomatoes along the fence here oh and some papaya there’s three of them oh that looks like it needs to be harvested yeah the fruit at the bottom is starting to go moldy more Tomatoes all the way to the

End there and then collared greens here nice more peppers and another tomato wow it’s nice that they can grow peppers all year long look at that that’s a pretty bell pepper it’s called the big Bera not sure what this pepper is another bell pepper wow that one is a big Bera it’s

Huge okay and then they have broccoli here and then another tomato nice I think this is more broccoli that’s what it looks like that’s bolted they even have a small Grill bag with strawberries in it oh I think this is malbar spinach it is how cool I’ve always

Wanted to grow this but it does not like the cold so I don’t grow it and more strawberry and more malbar spinach all right that was nice bye vegetable garden okay let’s continue on Jeff was nice to watch the dogs while I T that research Garden word Garden we’ve

Paradise because the way the stock it does look like a banana but it’s kind of flat and then it grows from the side each stock where the banana is more of a round stock I guess the bird of paradise is round at the bottom but it’s until it

Gets to the top it gets more flat and spreads out like feathers so we have the Amazon Lily here it looks like it’s almost going to bloom very pretty tropical jungle more bemade look at that stock there that’s bright red that’s interesting no Cog there’s no lizards back

There okay I think we’re done with this and then at the arbor they have this honeysuckle vine it’s huge and massive how pretty tropical garden is extended past this bye Kellog more airplant stag horn Fern very cool huh they have this Magnolia growing in this very shady location I thought

  1. Oh my. Love love love that one. So much to see and enjoy. The bonsai plants are wonderful and have taken many years to grow like they have. I have done some small ones but not successful 🙁
    Wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

You’ll be all wound up to be back home and doing your garden and maybe even adding some ideas you are collecting 😁😁

  2. “Look Jeff, you can take a bath here” 🤣 With all the stressful news coming at us every day, a walk in a garden is such good medicine. Really enjoyed this tour. Thank you!

  3. I loved this garden tour, thanks. There are a lot of plants that we had when I lived in Santa Barbara, Calif. The tall bird of paradise grew out from under our raised front deck. We also had poinsettia bushes six feet high. The boginvillia vine had to be cut away from the roof periodically. I miss some things about living there. But everyone we knew had to work a lot to stay above water in an expensive tourist town.

  4. Beautiful gardens!! ❤ I always check out the bonsai at the County Fair! Some nice ones at the Cherry Blossum Festival this year!! 🌸🌸

  5. How cool ! When I saw the thumbnail , for a second there i thought I had taken one of those pills I had left over from the 60's

  6. Hi Ausia, the one you said was the pink blossom in the beginning is a Dogwood Tree. It’s a white flower stained with a red spot signifying Jesus Christ blood. He was crucified on Dogwood. Fact my Friend. Take Care❤️

  7. For something really different, I catch an occasional Vietnamese farm and garden building videos and they make similar cabins and buildings out of Bamboo… with palm thatched roofs. It’s absolutely fascinating how they put the roofs together! They are kinda rainforest-y (😶?), so they are surrounded by many of the trees, shrubs, and flowers you’re seeing in that tropical garden… only they’re usually chopping through it to find a nice big bamboo patch or wild sugarcane or other treasure to harvest. Like your video here, it’s easy to get hooked on! 🥰

  8. Great video I’m glad I subscribed to your new channel. I’ve been a prescriber to your old channel for years. Love both of them.

  9. That plant with the things you said looked like caterpillars.. could that possibly be Quinoa? A grain from South America? I might have spelled it wrong. Lol. But does anyone know?
