California Garden TV: Are GMO’s good? The Purple GMO Tomato

In this video I want to talk about a new development for home gardeners. GMO seeds and the new GMO purple tomato. Will I grow them? Will I eat them? Will you?

  1. No franken food for me. You have to read your packages and boxes now because you can find a lot of products that say there is gmo items in the processed food you're buying.

  2. Let me see- is it just coincidence that GMO ( so NOT Mother Nature approved) is available now to the same backyard gardeners that are supposed to be making climate change issues worse? I may need to order many T-shirts. Starting to feel very defiant……

  3. Hi Brian, l for one will not be buying GMO seeds. It's a matter of trust and l don't trust big Ag, Big Pharma etc…
I seem to remember reading a few months ago about universities in Mexico and California working on how they can deliver mRNA vaccines via tomatoes instead of giving people the option to be vaccinated. That's enough for me not to trust them. I stocked up on heirloom seeds then.

  4. Yes yes and yes well said…
Todays garden defiantly act for me was bagging up my non GMO field grown maize corn, cayanne peppers and parsley seeds for next seasons growing… and cleaning up beds for our autumn/fall growing…
    Love your channel
Much love from this rebel gardener in Australia 💕🥒🍆🌶️🌽🍅

  5. My eyes are still rolling, 🙄🙄🙄 We live in a capitalist society. NO company, especially the big ones, no matter the lip service they pay, is doing ANYTHING except for profit. And I have further news for you, at least in my area, crops are sprayed with glyphosate a couple of weeks before harvest to kill weeds that would reduce the grade of the grain. That means we are likely all eating at least some glyphosate. I think if you aren’t cynical in this day and age then you are not living in the real world.

  6. I don't know if GMO seeds are good/bad. My choice to not grow them are because I don't agree with the company/philosophy/people behind those seeds. Let's be honest, home gardening has exploded after the pandemic and big AG just want their share of $$$.

  7. I don't see any difference between selective breeding, solar radiation, nuclear gardening, chemical mutagens, selected gene altering, or any other form of genetic manipulation. Given enough time and a mutation source it is theoretically possible to create the exact same alteration as a selected gene edit.

Only difference is that also creates thousands of other alterations that are unknown to the engineer, while a selective edit is much more targeted. As an example, potatoes have been accidentally bred to be more poisonous. Doing that by accident when using selected gene editing is a lot less likely.

Imo, the main issue of all genome altering techniques are the legality of them. Currently, patents and copyrights give companies way too much power.

  8. I don’t trust them!! No way!!! We heard for years that “they” are coming for the home gardeners. This is probably one of the ways they are trying to screw us up.

  9. I will not buy GMO seeds no matter whether they are cheap or expensive. I want my Heirlooms. And you are absolutely right in everything you said. ❤️

  10. You are absolutely 100% correct! Vote with your dollars. If nobody makes money selling GMO seeds to home gardeners, they'll quickly desist.

  11. Good video. Love the T-shirts. I have invested over 4 decades reading labels and making healthier choices in challenging environment to do so. Some people are noticing now in that maybe my kookie choices were so goofy. I've eaten organic tomatoes for decades but have now moved to organic heirlooms, which amazing come in purple too. Thanks for doing this video and for being willing to stand your ground.

  12. There’s a reason GMO’s are banned in Europe even though there’s tremendous efforts going on to break that barrier.
If it doesn’t happen in nature, it ain’t purposefully coming to my garden. GMO is nothing more than an excuse to use more chemicals, which makes BIG money!! I’ll add plastics to your list.
In the early 2000, our son did a speech on GMO foods. During his research, he found out that pesticides used to repel the Colorado potato beetle were being put into potatoes. So not only were potato eaters ingesting this toxic substance, but the potato bugs were mutating and developing a resistance to the pesticide built into the GMO potato. It’s like the problem with antibiotics. So who is this dangerous stuff really killing; us or the bugs? This was revealed 20 years ago. You’d think that 7% would have caught on by now. (Oh wait, is that 7% the group that’s making money on GMOs?) Look around. Why do we think disease is at an all time high and all these unexplained, rare and creepy health issues are “cropping” up? Pun intended!!!

  13. Those companies are just out to make more money plain and simple. Look at the wheat we eat now compared to back in the day. It is taller, hardier and more production, but it has hurt our health with so much wheat intolerance now. No thanks to GMO

  14. Breeding, or cultivating in the plant world, is the use and selection of code God wrote. Genetic modification is man thinking he knows enough to edit God's work. Take a look at the Mandelbrot Set and see if that sounds like such a good idea…

This particular plant has probably no ill effects, which is its ill effect. It will lull people into a false sense of human superiority bringing security. When all we have are GMO seeds, and they withhold them to starve us all to death…

  15. Thanks for your input, Brian. I’m not a scientist but will not buy the seeds. I have NO trust in our government…….haven’t since 2000.😬 Ramping up my garden and garden knowledge this year despite of what’s being said about my home garden’s “carbon footprint”. It’s become very apparent to me that it’s time for all of us to do our best to take care of ourselves and those around us. It’s become an issue worldwide.

  16. I see GMO seed usage by home gardeners as a totally dangerous thing. Cross pollination not only could affect the gardener, but any plants on other properties that might prove compatible. Just look at how different corn varieties have to be so isolated to avoid contamination. For example: As tempting as squash vine borer resistance might be, the GMO variety would need to be so isolated from the many cucurbits that could be cross pollinated, not to mention whatever plants were used to make them resistant to borers, it would be a lot less trouble to just protect the squash from the borer, or plant a parthenocarpic variety that doesn't need pollination to set fruit.

  17. I love purple but… No GMO in my garden. I'm organic all the way! If you want sterile soil put dirt in a foil pan, cover tight with foil and bake in your oven at 350* f for 10- 15 mins let cool and there ya go! You can even make this in an outdoor fire pit if you don't want it in your kitchen. Great pest spray, use hot peppers or chillies, and marigolds. Steap into a strong tea, cool and spray. Why spend all that money on expensive chemicals when what you need, you already have? And you know its safe. Cant wait for your t shirts to come out 😀another Great video! Thanks!

  18. I have listened to a YouTuber whose brother is an “Organic Farmer “ . She grows almost all of her family’s food. She said that she would NEVER buy organic because she has watched how her brother gardens “Organically “ and she knows how and what he puts on his garden. He then sells it for a higher price. I will seed save and grow what I can and quit growing what I can’t seed save for. This world is getting crazier every day. Makes me think of what I have been taught since I was a little girl. 2 Timothy 3:1-6. We are there. I look forward to seeing Psalm 37:9,10,11 & 29 take place.

  19. There are black tomatoes available that are supposedly without GMO. Baker Creek has promoted deep anthocyanin tomatoes. I’m sticking with the ones advertised for being non-GMO. Tomato, Black Beauty
I won’t post the link out of respect.

  20. as a micro farmer, your farmer is not trying to kill you. My family eats the same things I grow. Even the commercial farmers around me eat their own produce. I watched an A&M professor drink a glass of glyphosphate and he is still alive today. Do you want to spray poison on your plants or ineffective nasty sprays or just let the science work? If my professor could drink Roundup, how is cow poop better? This is a good conversation to have. But, bottom line, your farmer does not want to kill you

  21. If you grow outdoors your plants can be polinated by anything that happens along from the winds and the pollinators of nature. You don't need to plant a GMO seed to have your crops affected by genetic modification.

  22. In ethanol production the corn is sprayed with roundup to dry the corn for better price.
Food grade corn is usually dried in the silos by mixing and fanning the corn to get the desired moisture level for premium payments for farmer.😊
    Note weeding different again.

  23. What about covering the ground with a heavy tarp til planting time? Nothing grows til the sun shines on it. Plus lots of worms and snakes like it.

  24. Someone knows what happens when a GMO tomato cross pollinates with another non GMO tomato. Not me because I’m not a biologist (or chemists).

  25. Another reason to seed save! Plus while this variety may seem innocuous, you don't know what else is in it – that is only what they want you to know. The plant will cross pollinate with the heirloom varieties and that is not a good thing if you seed save and want the pure old fashioned tasty toms.

  26. Looking forward to engineered tomatoes that are more healthy than regular tomatoes!

Glad they are incorporating edible snapdragon genes to give some of the benefits of foods like blueberries.

Two different genomes could have developed a trait earlier and split later and both have the gene.

  27. Tomatoes are nightshades which are bad for alot of people. There are many colors of tomatoes to choose from we don't need gmo anything.

  28. There are two sides: one that seems to only have a few specific periphery related safety issues. The second showing data that there isn't a nutritional difference or if there is, it's more nutrient dense.

Seems like as time goes on, engineered foods will be considered safer… Or should be, except I don't think there's a time limit that will satisfy naysayers.

The glyphosate resistant stuff… Yeah, is the genetic modification the issue?

No. It's literally the poison being ingested.

  29. Crops across the board are less nutrient dense because of the extra carbine in the air, the plants are getting more carbine but not more nutrients from the ground. And yes I ordered the seeds. 🌱
