Gary Pilarchik: How to Get Massive Sunflowers by June 1st & Later: Don’t Buy Transplants Direct Sow Them Early!

Sunflower plants are best grown from seed. Plant them early. They come out tough and can manage the cold. They wont grow much above the surface but will establish wonderful root systems. Once the warmth rolls in, they take off!

  2. This content really came in handy. I am going to plant Sunflowers that I started indoors and are ready to be placed in the garden. Great timing for me, Gary.

  3. Funny, an hour ago I just planted some sunflower seeds then this comes up in YouTube!

  4. Never knew about early planting…always waited to close to last frost date. That's Mother's day here in Southern WV.

  5. The birds plant a lot of seeds for me by dropping them in various areas of my garden. However, when I plant mammoth seeds, something is digging them up. I have to put copper rings around the seedlings to protect the ones that do emerge. Out of half a dozen I planted a month ago, only one made it… but the ones dropped by the birds are fine. Go figure.

About 4 years ago, I planted a row of the multiflower type along a back fence. They have tiny seeds the birds eat, and what drops to the ground sprouts in early spring in the bark mulch. I leave them to get a few inches so the birds can eat the sprouts, check for slug activity, and then I pull what I don't want for composting.

  6. I made a 10 second video of my sunflower blowing in the wind and the next morning the sunflower had been chopped off by a crow, so how do you keep crows away from your sunflowers? That’s what I’d like to know.

  7. Two years ago I had massive Mammoth Sunflowers, last year they got to about 5ft and were destroyed by some long 1" bugs that decided my sunflowers were the perfect mating location. It killed every head of seeds, they kind of looked like squash bugs but never found any info or advice

  8. Gary, we tried to plant some mammoth this spring and they didn’t germinate. But since that I’ve been reading they prohibit other growth and fruit production of other plants due to a chemical they release. Any truth to this? Are there specific plants they should not be planted near? So we were sort of relieved our Mammoths didn’t germinate but we would like some out there.

  9. Loved it Gary 🙂 I grow sunflowers every year here in Thailand. I tend to germinate them in a yoghurt pot and get them in the ground as soon as they're a couple if inches tall.

  10. I had started a bunch of sunflowers inside (zone 4) & transplanted outside & the rabbits ate the leaves off of ½ of them & just left the stems behind! I have since bought small cheap metal garbage baskets from the dollar store & used them as cloches, covering over the seedlings. I use them in my other gardens as well. So far so good!!

  11. I have a chipmunk that ate all me seedlings! How do you get rid of chipmunks? Peppermint spray, plants?

  12. Very timely video. How to get massive sunflowers by June 1st and we are already nearing June 1st…. Do you just put out videos just for the views or to sell your seeds and book or you do it to help the subscribers?!

  13. Thank you for the reminder. Going to get my seeds in today. Our weather has been weird this month, very cool then 80s for a couple weeks, now very cool again.

  14. Glad my comment on your last video could serve as inspiration to create this video.

  15. Do you suppose it's too late to throw in some seeds for Zone 7b? Also, do sunflower seeds go bad? I have a pack from 2 years ago.
