This spring only some of the branches grew leaves. The ones without break easy and seem to be dead.

    It’s struggling, by the number of roots above the surface, I would guess poor, compacted, hard clay soil, call a landscape company or better yet county extension agent. To get a expert opinion.

    Remove the dead branches, mulch about 3′ around the tree, and get some tree fertilizer spikes to pound into the soil. You can also berate, and top dress with sand and mild fertilizer on the rest of your lawn.

    I wouldn’t spend any money on this tree aside from removing and replacing.
