I won’t be sharing my art this week, I will be joining in the #amplifymelanatedvoices movement to support the BIPOC community. I will stay muted and listening from June 1-7 to make space for and amplify their voices. The only thing I’ll be sharing are stories highlighting work from the BIPOC community.
On a very personal note – I grew up in a equally mixed neighborhood, raised by a single white father. He worked such long hours to feed and shelter us, he was a construction worker. I was always at home after school by myself as I had no siblings. My best friend was CJ who lived across the street, he was black. His mother would feed me dinner constantly bc she knew I was home alone and my father was doing everything he could to keep the lights on. I’ll never forget her or the other black mothers and fathers who looked out for me. There were several. It makes me so upset to think how they feel right now. Heartbroken. And I am so heartbroken for them.
