Out of all the plants i grow from seed, cactuses are starting to be my favorite. It’s much slower than cuttings but it’s rewarding to see the little things growing up and keeping their genetic diversity

I wish I was better at growing native plants from seed. It’s pretty hit and miss. More miss than hit. But mother nature is pretty good at it so usually I’ll just throw seed where I want it and it usually works out.

I ran across a mountain ball cactus yesterday in bloom. I see them so rarely – only really know two places where they exist and they’re both at least 6 miles from the trailheads. When I was hiking yesterday, it did cross my mind if the reason that the ball cacti don’t exist is because people took them home, or if they just got outcompeted by prickly cacti.
