Rescue African Milk Tree

I've been given this very sad and stressed African Milk Tree. Have I given it the best chance of reviving itself?

I repotted it as soon as I got it home as it was in soaking wet heavy compost with no grit or perlite, and noticed it had barely any roots and a lot of the bottom part was shrivelled and hollow. So I chopped off the dead bits and lower branches, added some rooting hormone, watered it sparingly and have now popped it in a warm bright spot with no direct sun.

I'm just wondering if the position is good and how often I should water it to give it the best chance? I have potted up the small lower branches that were still alive separately, so hopefully even if this one doesn't make it I'll have some babies growing by the end of the summer.
