Euphorbia ingens root rot?

I had these 3-4fters put into the ground back in November here in socal. Between then and down it went through several crazy rains, and I'd mistakenly left drip system set to weekly. Some of these recently started turning black and spreading quickly from bottom up. I dug them up, and cut them clear of the blackened part. The blackened part is hard, not mushy. And when cut through, they're pink with no sap. I take it this is result of root rot? They're my first ingens, so I don't really know much about them. How do I prevent this from repeating?
