[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey everyone welcome to the wild side of Australia it’s just us a bunch of rocks and a plan to make something epic it’s not just any project we’re not just working with any old backyard John The Legend who owns this place went all out and built a massive concrete Wave yeah you heard that right A surfer’s Dream right here in the middle of Australia and tucked right under that wave a sweet pool our mission we’re going to surround that wave and pool with a waterfall and outcroppings that’ll blow your mind we’re talking Boulders up to 5 tons each hey I’m Jack Haru from Atlanta Water Gardens we’ve traveled all the way to Australia to build a waterfall that’s more than just water running off of rocks it’s going to be a piece of the landscape telling its own story out here where the scenery is as rugged as it gets we kicked off our day with a cup of coffee and a good long look at our plans the first raise of sun we’re just hitting our sight kind of setting the stage for us all right bub let’s see what we got here it’s windy out huh yeah oh the plan do you remember this right so this was originally going to be a like more of a pond John shot this as a like a pool so this is just going to be a gunite pool and our job is really to do rock work and build waterfalls which is our favorite part anyway yeah I was just I was just talking back to home and and I said um they said so is it going to be difficult they said it’s like building a waterfall onto an existing swimming pool yeah like that’s what we’re doing the interface that he’s going for is going to be a little different than what we normally do but he’s got that yeah [Laughter] I think still our trickiest our our biggest challenge is going to be blending the wave and I love the direction that they’re going with the Wave It’s to look more like uh a famous a famous area out here it’s called Uh Rock wave or wave wave Rock wave rock yeah wave Rock so instead of that thing being blue it’s to be like a petrified wave almost which will blend a lot all those Browns and Grays like this color the color of the stone is it’s very Brown yeah and it actually aligns with what they’re trying to accomplish and this is all indigenous stuff so it fits with the area uh challeng is with this Stone super sharp yep so we’re going to have to definitely be careful with uh making sure we get enough Fabric in there and the upside is we got sand it’s nothing but beach sand here so I’m not worried about what’s underneath the liner wow it’s it’s almost like like it literally you throw it up in the air and it disappears so that I’m not worried about he’s already done all this work before we got here we’re literally just going to be building waterfalls and streams and then he’s going to finish all the rest of it so he’s got a lot lot of work to do inside the pool all this Boulder work here and all that so plumbing and painting and all so we get to do our our favorite part right building waterfalls I think what we do is we we get this liner dropped in here the the operator just showed up so he’s going to flatten this area out so we can work why don’t we go pick out some rocks awesome and uh make this thing happen here we go all right here we go every Rock we’ve lined up is not just a boulder it’s a key part of the puzzle we spent a good chunk of the morning just talking about where each one should go it’s not just about where they fit it’s about making sure they all tell the same story I remember this one from last time this is I think one of the biggest rocks we got it’s so awesome though like it’s such a it’s such a strange Stone this is like a so so we have some of this at home it’s called a conglomerate where it’s all like these small pieces that were just smashed together probably something volcanic I imagine from this it looks volcanic um I would call it volcanic you call it colom g gig conglomerate yeah so what what’s challenging about this is look how freaking sharp everything is there’s all these sharp pieces in here so we’re going have to be care it’s not even the liner like we’re looking at our straps that we’re working with we’re going to rip through some straps like just rip through them so we’ve got to really protect those straps straps are John got they’re there’re like a a two ply where we really need like a three ply or four ply for this if we stand this up vertical this could be waterfall coming off that most like this side coming off I almost think like this is the better side it’s so like this side’s got so much more character the only thing I can’t like I don’t know what the water’s going to do on this side like once we stand this thing up you can tell that it’s going to hit this on the way down well what’s cool about this stuff is it’s it’s kind of soft we can chisel a lot of this stuff out and almost shape this thing but then we get something else down in front of it where it kind of bounces off and we get more of that like that back and forth white water action some of this like you know it’s going to come through here so heavy and we can chip this out and open it up some more if we need to but it’s going to look like it washed this away and then once it hits this it’s really going to Splash all over and we want a little more Splash on this stuff just because of how far away the house is from the waterfall well we have instant 7 ft tall right here well that’s the other thing that’s huge but I I think like the one we really need to be starting with is this one here that platform is like that far below the beam so that would probably actually work are you done ha a spider this could tuck in behind the beam of that pool Edge yep and where you’re just you’re exposing this and then where the beam is like John could do some other Rock work after it gets it finished yeah it’ll be easy to match up back but this definitely comes off here and something else has to come out in front of it yeah so I think this is probably this our first rock this is where we start oh high five [Music] once we had our game planned down it was time to get our hands dirty placing the first rock was like all right this is happening and when we moved on to the second we had to be extra careful sharp edges everywhere and we didn’t want to wreck any of our gear John I’m guessing at some point I should ask you for some sunscreen do you have sunscreen no they don’t believe in it Olive Oil Man olive oil got some Crisco inside if you want that yeah Cramer [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] as the day went on we were on a roll but then as the sun started dipping it was like Nature’s way of telling us to wrap it up we pushed hard made a ton of progress and it was time to chill and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow end of day one and we’re feeling pretty stoked about what we’ve managed to pull off it’s not just about building something cool it’s about transforming this spot into something special can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings all right day two is here and after smashing it on day one we’ve got a big day ahead of us it’s another early start because you know we’ve got to beat that crazy Australian Sun first thing in the morning we always have a quick chat about what’s going on for the day today’s big question how do we deal with this sun it’s brutal out here plus when you’re playing with rocks this massive every move counts we’ve got to get it right or we could end up painting ourselves into a corner imagine getting some like if those olive trees get big or whatever or some other types of trees I don’t I don’t know anything but just to have some natural shade that goes that way cuz that Sun’s brutal as it comes up in the morning yeah yeah I’m going to do olives you remember when we went and had a look at Bill’s Place up there how he he’s got them shaped yeah yeah beautiful that where you just got your trunk and then he kind of did a perfect mullet on top yep yeah that’s what I want to do okay so I think we have to really think about logistics here and as far as uh what we get done before we block ourselves off we know we got to get at least some The Rock work dropped in around that patio right BR well we’ll just yeah we’ll drop a few just so it’s easier for John to yeah like I was saying yesterday you’re going to have to be careful John up against these rocks when you dig for the wall so you don’t undermine everything yeah this morning I think we have to drop this in so what are you seeing then you want to come like that triangle piece that we were talking about yeah but I don’t think we’re going to get one high enough to match this so it’s going to have to be that and then get up behind it and come lower like this whole interface this whole interface here is going to be kind of a pain that cuz we’re talking about getting a big flat one in up here right and there is like up in that pile there’s like there’s some there’s some nice flat ones I think this is like just a hard turn and then we’re starting it like right there right so you want to come in like this height just as we’re getting our heads into the game boom more rocks and stone dust get delivered it’s like Christmas for us but instead of presents it’s giant rocks go figure [Music] so we have a what a 10in wide waterfall yeah and you probably have 15 Tons of stone to pull it off just because of the height and so I don’t think what people realize is like when you get a pie like that the massive amount of stone that’s got to go right and left and pull it off right it’s funny I have these conversations all the time time where I’m like list the outcroppings are just as important as the waterfall rocks and people don’t understand the extra like 50 tons of rock that’s going to be on the job it’s that it’s to make it all make sense cuz this is a like from elevation Pond up to where we are now is is over 7 ft yeah I mean and we’re right now we’re like 30 ft wide how often do you get into a typical homeowner’s backyard you know like post stamp postage stamp backyard flat and a customer says I want a 4ot high waterfall all the time right and so that’s a 4T high waterfall and you have 15 Tons of stone just for that water make that work that’s not including now if that was a flat backyard how much soil you would need behind it and everything else GI t0 yard 60 60 yards of soil probably 60 tons you’d have more Stone in the retaining wall than you would in the waterfall yeah 100% that is like exactly 4T like I always use my ribs as a 4ft marker and and you’re like right there yeah but look at look over here here like first of all we got the layering right but then this pocket whatever goes inside here is going to have branches that go out kind of in front of this rock up above the rock it’ll be peeking out from behind some foliage and explain that because like your fans my fans know this but this plant fans in Australia this plant pocket like for me like the most like one of the most important things that’s happening in here otherwise we would just have this like sea of rocks it’s going be a monolith of rocks yeah I think the Landscaping is really a crucial part to finishing this thing off cuz when those plants go in up behind you’ve got all the dimension now and like I was saying with the Rocks poking out that’s what makes it look like okay this is this could the believably have been there right but yeah no this would like it we just need something to take your eye away from like all of this rock and by having a big green plant in here whatever the Australian plant is will actually make you then hyperfocus on waterfall I’m pretty sure whatever it is is going to have spiders living in it there’s no doubt in my mind with the main rocks for the waterfall sorted we moved on to the outcroppings they might not seem like the main show but trust me they’re key they make the whole setup look like it’s meant to be here not just plunk down by some humans [Music] we hit a point where we had to switch things up if we didn’t we’d either trap our Machinery run out of rocks or Worse mess up what we’d already done not on my watch Jack let me see that thing I think I think we need to shift gears a little yeah actually Scotty guys come over here real quick so this is this is kind of where we’re at right now you know here’s the big wave like this here’s these waterfalls that we been working on there’s the stairs like right off the corner here so we need to get this fire pit in we’re not going to bring it up as close to this waterfall as we’ve got it drawn in because if we start digging all this out things are going to start we’re going to undermine stuff but you see this big boulder wall right here this Boulder wall has got to kind of go in to hide all this well plus Mike can only get to like right here right now with the machine so he’s going to have to do this at this point so we hog all this out probably pretty close to this wall that’s here now Mike we’re going to drop a bunch of big boulders in here as as far as you can reach and if we have to get some from the other side we can do that later yeah and then that’ll be it like then we’re done over here and then we can finish the waterfall cuz if we go and spend the time up here we get into blocking us us out of here [Applause] [Applause] [Music] hours flew by and just like that the sun is calling it a day and so are we we made the most of it though looking back it’s pretty awesome to see how much we got done and that’s a wrap for day two it’s shaping up pretty nicely huh if you’re digging what we’re doing here smash that like button hit subscribe and let us know in the comments how do you think it’s looking you got any tips or tricks we should know about or something you would love to hear about we’re back at it next week so don’t miss out we’ll catch you on the next one
