Today We Are Working In The Garden

Let’s work in the cottage garden today on this Wednesday walkabout. As you can see, it’s very brisk and windy and there is a storm brewing. Hopefully by the time you watch this video, the weather system will have passed through and we will remain unscathed. Actually, true confessions we shot this on Tuesday just to avoid the storms! #cottagegarden #gardendecor #gardendesign #gardening #gardentour #fronyard #deadheading #cottagestyle #beforeandafter #foxglove #perennials

okay so on today’s Wednesday Walkabout we’re going to do a little bit of work in the garden we’re going to show some basic gardening skills for you new garders I want to show you some fun things some a few surprises I guess uh also point out some things that are on my to-do list well let’s just say there is a lot to do and I need to quit talking about it and just and just get started so what do you say let’s do it let’s do it now the reason of True Confessions I guess it is not Wednesday we are doing this before Wednesday because we have well you know what let’s put up this axios picture that we saw on the news this morning Leah remind me that we want to put that up and Oklahoma looks like we are just right in the center of the target for extremely dangerous potential weather that possibly might start later today it might start tomorrow all I know is that we have a very high likelihood which isn’t always the case a very high likelihood of destructive weather with high winds tornadic conditions and hail so that is an explanation for why we are doing this in advance and that’s my question of the day I know so many questions I ask are related to weather but it seems to me and does it seem to you as if Tornado Alley is just really expanding it seems like it used to be here just in Oklahoma and now it is expanding absolutely everywhere definitely to the southeast and other in other areas so let me know if your area has ever been struck by a tornado or if you twoo worry about it okay enough enough of that let’s talk about what we can do at this phase in the garden so earlier in different videos I have showed how I am being very very Vigilant about deadheading my Salvia because I want it to keep putting out new blooms now I can do that and I have been doing it individually in other words I will take like a spent Bloom like this and I will cut it right there cut off the the dead Bloom and then you can see that there are new blooms in weight see right there I cut that off they’re new blooms in weight to come up and take their place however a lot of those side blooms have also already bloomed and that is very very tedious work to go in and cut each one of those individually so what I’m going to do is I’m going to take this mass of perennials this is salvia East freezeland and some other varieties and I really and you’ll notice this one look at this Stuart this one has started to just Cave In The Middle come this way you can see how this one is opened up and it doesn’t have good form anymore and I want to reestablish I want to reestablish good that just happens that just it just sometimes happens it doesn’t always but in this case it has I also am seeing I’m seeing lots of rly poliy down here which tells me that they’ve got some some plant matter some leaves and things rly poy are the cleanup crew of the garden and but they also in addition to that good service they also sometimes can pray on tender Roots so I’m going to put a little bit of Captain Jack’s dust on this but first I am going to cut this back because I really want it to come out again have good form and Bloom for a second and possibly even a third time now I could do this in two different ways so get your Implement of choice I can use just some basic scissors and if you’re a new Gardener if this is what you have on hand then by all means go for it and you just use your scissors and in this case I’m cutting it hard I’m really cutting it back hard all the way to the base and Lea could you magically hand me you guys are always saying Linda you never have your waste bucket with you when you need it so Leah is going to grab it watch this magic Again by Magic Leah is going to grab that for me yes and I’ve got it in there now can I just say that would this make a beautiful bouquet to bring inside yes indeed it would but for right now I am not going to do that because I’m getting ready to leave town for a couple days and I won’t need that inside to make me happy okay so I could continue with that and just my scissors now steuart if you can look down in here really closely can you see there’s tiny little bits of green like right there mhm and right there let me see point out with my cool job gloves there’s some tiny Snippets of green little illusions of green okay that is going to turn into new foliage so I am not con erned at all that I’m killing this plant and that it’s going to come back now again I could use scissors or sometimes I just like to use long bladed pruners and these aasoon ones are just great for that so I can make even quicker work of it by using these and I mean in very very short order a matter of seconds I have exposed the crown of the plant and by the way I have also exposed and I’m so happy Sally Rosa jumbo pink Salvia so I yes screenshot that cuz I do love this color It’s a Wonderful companion plant to the little miss uh Bonnie sweet uh Spa so I love that okay so I’m going to clean this up I’m not going to leave any of the garden debris here because that will attract roly poy because as I said earlier they’re the cleanup crew of The Gardener of the garden this also opens this up and it’s going to give it a lot more light and before I know it I will have a wonderful tuft right here now you know what else I spy down here and another reason to do this look here that I recognize as a tiny tiny little boxwood basil seedling that was protected by this plant and was hiding can you see right there got to be closer yeah so what a happy little surprise and that was hiding underneath the foliage the fact you see those is so crazy well it it just you have to you have to oh yeah that was a tiny little so let’s take a break here cuz I want to go and get some of my Captain dust and I’ll be right back so first of all I want to point out again for you new gardeners out there what am I using this is appropriate for organic Gardens it is Captain Jack’s dead buug flower and vegetable dust and what I have found is I don’t typically try to deter roly Poes from my garden too much but I do when I see a lot of them around the crown of a plant they are attracted to the fact that it’s been very very wet and not only will they break down oh Leaf clippings and garden debris but they are also very likely to start pursuing the root zones of plants that are at this point located in a lot of moisture rich soil so I don’t want that to happen here so I’m taking this spinosad dust and I am just going to gently run little s bug run run away so I don’t get you but I’m going to just gently treat this because I don’t want this wonderful plant to be compromised or chewed up by that sell bug those cell bugs so this is what I am doing and I’m going to do it a little bit not only in the crown of the plant but around the perimeter if I see something that is being chewed on by bugs and I’m not really sure what it is sometimes conservatively I will sprinkle a little bit of this on the leaves to protect them from uh from other pests dining on them so that is one thing that I’m going to be doing I’m going to come back through here and I am going to do this to all of the other Salvia that is past its prime because I want it to really grow out and flush out in brand new new blooms but you saw how quickly that went using these long bladed shears and I anticipated at that the rest of that type of gardening here will also go very very quickly now let me show you something fun okay oh and by the way we finally got around to shooting an episode on gardening in clay soil and I’m just thinking oh I forgot to tell you guys that one thing to the extent possible it’s not completely realistic but to the extent possible you don’t want to walk on on your garden beds because if you have clay soil that compacts and and um oh squishes if you will squishes all of those clay soil particles and and compresses it so much so that it makes it even that much harder for plants to really penetrate their root systems through that clay soil so to the extent possible do not walk on on your soil okay so over here I told you that some of that boxwood basil and we saw a little darling over there had overwintered and it came back and I said for a while it wasn’t doing anything it was just sitting there well now it has started to grow and also what has started to grow is a Seedling of some Salvia and I don’t want this in here because I want that basil boxwood to grow so I’m going to tenderly take my hor Cory knife and remove that Salvia and I’m GNA I when it’s completely done and then I’m just going to tuck that back in there so really without disturbing those little seedlings I was able to remove this Salvia and if I wanted to gift this to somebody else what I’m doing is I’m just keeping some empty pots over here and I think probably what I’m going to do is gift these to suu there you go Stuart’s mom before she leaves some Salvia this is I believe that dark purple suu and all she’ll have to do is tuck these in to her probably colle soil and it will take off just fine so do not discard if you don’t have to okay something else that’s really fun come over here Walk This Way Stuart I am continuing to dead head my gardinia which right now is brilliant it smells just fabulous okay but if you have watched my walkabouts you know that I had some pumpkins seeds that germinated right here and I didn’t want to pull them up I just put a tutour here and look now they have put out flowers got pumpkins coming and they may or may not turn into pumpkins and this may or may not get too rambunctious to live in this spot but I don’t care because every day I come out and visit it and it’s so fun because it just seems to grow like literally inches in a day and there’s so many different places very very quick so what I’ll do is just to the unless you know it might get really buggy and I decide to yank it out but for right now I am so enjoying it I enjoying showing it to the kids I’m going to leave it here let it kind of wind its way up this to tour and it will be it’ll be very very very fun so that is another exciting thing that I have discovered in the garden I discovered those little yellow flowers just recently um let’s take a break here and let’s see what else there is to discover well there may not be any Good Hair Days recently but there are definitely good aliam days right now and this is far and above the most frequently commented plant in my garden right now these ambassador aliums from color Blends they’re a member of the onion family they have been so popular and again the kids just are absolutely fascinated by them I planted some other varieties and they did pretty well but these are definitely the most dramatic and these are the ones that I will plant even more of next year now not just plant next year but plant more of because I am hoping that these will endure to next year and what have I done and what will I do to ensure their survival to next season well number one when I planted them I put a big dose of gravel in the bottom of a deep hole why did I do that I did that because they don’t just prefer good drainage they demand good drain drainage because I don’t want them to rot in this heavy clay soil over the winter or over the summer even if we get lots and lots of rain as we’ve been getting so they’re starting to dry but I think they look really beautiful now one thing I wish I would have done and I didn’t do till a little bit later and that is I should have planted something in the foreground of them so that when the foliage begins to die back and you can see that it begins to do that even and while the bulbs themselves or the blooms themselves are in their full Glory I’m getting this at the base and the foliage is looking tattered and it’s looking Brown and yet I have to leave it here I have to leave it here to Brown on and mature to feed the plant for next year so I can’t cut it away what could I have done to mitigate that problem I could have planted something right in front of it so that as it grew like these budia like what I should have done is plant it right here maybe at the base of the budle eye and the candy butterfly I should have planted it right there at the base of the candy butterfly or I should have put in two and I’ll probably add another one of this purple Autumn royalty on corelia I could put another one right here and as these grow what it does then is just hide the the tattered and drying foliage so I wish I had done that I will do better next time but that is get your light bulb ready Stuart that is a gardening tip if you are planting something a bulb that will remain in the ground and you don’t want to see that dying Brown foliage then hide it somehow with something planted in front of it that will grow up mature and hide that dying foliage so let’s take a break here and let’s move on okay let me answer another couple of questions actually more than a couple I’ve gotten it from several people do I still make are they still available these QVC weatherproof baskets no they are not and it makes me so so sad that they are not because I would buy even more of them I know you guys would too this basket is like four years old and look at how well yeah they haven’t really I mean it’s just it’s just great and I use it for garden debris and why do I love it because unlike the garden trugs which I also love this one because it’s got a basket weave when it rains all the way and just goes right through it and doesn’t leave me with a Mucky mess for my uh Garden clippings so I’ve got this here because I have another whole stand of that Salvia so before I tell you about the hydrangeas let’s tackle this stand of salvia and here it’s really apparent steuart nope it’s really apparent where the other new foliage is going to come from see right here oh yeah yeah yeah okay so I’m going to do do the same thing here and and I could cut this back all the way I could cut it back maybe by a half I typically cut it back all the way because I’ve got a very long growing season and I know it grows very rapaciously so I’m just going to do this and see what quick work that makes so if you’ve been hesitating on getting out there and doing this because it’s too too hot or it’s too rainy or it’s too whatever um this is kind of just accidental gardening I come out of here I see it I see a tough that needs to be done and I just go ahead and cut it even though I didn’t intend to work in the garden now I have to say let’s stop for a moment and appreciate just how pretty even the cut back flowers look in that basket and then we were looking at this too now the timing on this is also important important you guys and I’ll tell you why yes it breaks my heart a little bit to cut it back while it’s still showing some color but why am I doing it now because I am going to be gone for a few days and while I am gone I know that this will then recover and by the time I get back it will all already uh be starting to fill out and don’t worry that I said that I’m going to be gone for a few days because there will be people here staying at my house and you don’t have to worry about my security but thank you for always mentioning it you guys now I’m going to go ahead and clean up also some of this leafy stuff again because I don’t want to attract rly poy and in my case a lot of the cutting back I’m doing is on the Salvia but in your garden it may not be time to do this yet you may be a month behind mine and yours may not even have flowered yet or it may be in at its peak for me I am in a Southern garden and in many Southern Gardens right now some of the stuff have has already bloomed and it’s time to cut back these perennials so they can bloom again so that is that now let’s talk about another frequently Asked question and that is what kind of hydrangeas do I have planted here because you may recall this is only their second year and I’ve got these wonderful blooms so in answer to a question what will I never plant again I will never again plant any kind of hydrangea that does not bloom on new wood these Bloom on new wood and what is the advantage of that well they can’t freeze out if it gets really really cold if we get a hard late Frost they’re not going to freeze out on the buds that were formed on old wood last year these form their buds on new wood that has just come out and it’s not subject to a frost so look at the heads on this this is just gorgeous this is a deer Dolores there’s another one called Big Daddy that also has beautiful blooms but it blooms on old wood so this is the variety that I have selected now did I select some in pink and some in blue and some in purple no I did not this is what the soil and the acidity of the soil is telling them to do that was a funny question no I didn’t no I did not they are just doing this B based on the context and and the the formula formula of the soil itself and it’s acidic or lack of acidic or alkaline nature so I love it the fact that it just comes up in this extra Extravaganza of different Hues that then match the Hues of the Fox Glove it matches the Hues of the Larks spur it’s just wonderful you can see a bunch of it over here and if we gods are benevolent it will continue to put out blooms throughout the course of the summer but right now they’re wonderful which makes me okay with the fact that the Roses especially because of all the rain we’ve had are past their Prime and I’m starting the process of deadheading them but I’m not so sad to see them go a because I know they will bloom again but B because I know that the hydrangeas are coming on full force in their wake and as evidence of that I have not only the heads of these beautiful dear Dolores colorful hydrangeas but look here all of these white wedding hydrangeas in this drift are putting out new buds too and that’s just wonderful so wonderful in fact that I just planted another one so if you’re wanting a Mother’s Day gift if you’re wanting um really any kind of gift a Hostess gift I just think a white wedding hydrangea is perfect for that and and you know even a wedding gift why not a wedding a white wedding hydrangea as a wedding gift particularly if they’re new homeowners after they get after they tie the knot so that is this area right here I am glad now that I got this one activity done I am going to sprinkle probably a little bit of that Captain’s Jack on this and then let’s move to another area that needs some attention now you saw me remove this Garden Clos that was protecting the boxwood basil seeds and by the way so many of you have asked and we’ll put a link to the boxwood basil seeds in the description box below now’s the perfect time to plant those if you are beyond your frost date and they will germinate and grow very very quickly so this speaking of QVC this is something that is still available in multiple different finishes and in multiple sizes on QVC these are some Garden closes that I designed they come with Stakes to secure them to the ground but what I love about them as you can see here there’s a clasp and you lift that up and you can remove the top portion and have a smaller Clos and then also have just some kind of growing cage below if you want to separate these see here’s the other clasp on the other side if you want to separate these into two different parts it also makes storage easier another reason I like that is because I have found that sometimes I will use just the top portion and I will use it to cover food if I’m entertaining I’ll use the close close top portion to cover food and kind of use it as a protective device maybe with some tool underneath it to keep the flies and stuff at Bay or if I just want a smaller clo and not something so tall but these are still available I do love these and you can still find them and we will put a link in the description box below so I’m going to put that back over there and then I want you to come over here because here’s something that has immeasurably hi Leah has immeasurably improve the quality of my life you guys know that I love my hose my blue blue Bala whatever it is blue Bala hose love it okay what I don’t love is when I’ve used it in the past I’ll pull it around and it will squish some of the plantings Lush plantings on this side of lemon line or on this side of Lemon Lane depending on which direction I’m going so I bought just an inexpensive set of these hose guides and I just put them in the appropriate locations to protect the hose or to protect the plantings from the hose I’ve got them on this side and on that side do I wish they were in Black yes I do but they’re not and in short order they’re going to be complet completely covered under foliage so I’m not going to worry about that too much you can see here I’ve got one over here too and the other thing I like about them is they’re really easy to install it wasn’t difficult at all you just kind of put them down and then if your soil has just been rained in you just step on it and they go into the dirt very very easily look over here here’s another little surprise I told you about some lettuce that just appeared and look here’s some lettuce right here and it just it just appeared I think this might be arugula is it it is I love arugula so there’s just a little tough of arugula and some greens and things I don’t know how they got there looks like it’s like on fire with blue or purple whatever is isn’t this great okay you guys had asked me if I did have my Lark spur will it keep on blooming well yes it will if if the weather continues to be appropriate for arur so these that are getting ready and here’s how I know look here Stuart these are buds okay these are flowerheads that are starting to go to seed see they’re elongated excuse me I’ve got a r stuck in my throat but if I want to pinch these off yes I could and it will continue to put out more blooms but at a certain point it’s going to get to two hot it’s going to get too windy and they’re just not going to want to keep pumping out flowers at which at which time I will let some of it stay in place so the seed heads can dry and drop but the rest of it after that’s done is I’ll just pull it out and I’ll put it in the compost bin because it will look too scraggly and I won’t want to have it here here it’s kind of hiding that wonderful tauper but that’s okay now if I want to make sure that what I have next year comes up in the same beautiful blue I can put a little tag on here I did this for a Southern Living tip once in their magazine and I just got a little hang tag and I put it on there and it said purple and then on the pink I put something that said pink and on the white if I wanted to differentiate the white seed from the Lilac pink color I could do the same here and I just hang a little tag on here that says pink and that says white and that way I can differentiate the seed for when I’m wanting to scatter it in other locations or when I am gifting it if someone says Linda could I have some of your pink Fox Glove seed then that’s an easy way to differentiate it differentiate it if I remember to put those little tags on let’s take a break here I’m going to get a drink of water and then we’ll go someplace else hydrate hydrate hydrate and it makes it more fun to hydrate I tell you I love these glass because they’ve got texture they’re kind of bubbly on The Ridges but I like them because a lot of times if I’m working out in the garden or really inside you know you get something you have lotion on your hands or whatever and it slips right out these don’t slip out of your hands plus I just like the way I just really like the way they look they’re one of my favorite favorite things that I’ve gifted myself so they’re pretty cool through the magic of Television there we go um so I’m going to give you an update that’s going to take and by the way you guys you guys sense him lovely as way she is she’s had the flu or a really bad cold or something she has she was really sick over the weekend so send her some positive loving Vibes she just yes she said thank you okay I want to give you an update on my container plantings because a lot of these things Wen doing much last time you saw them these are things that I overwintered from last year but look at how they are really starting to come out now the veranee the Perry Winkles the calibra COA the pentas that I put in there all of this all of this diamond Frost euphorbia so I I promised that they would be Lush in no time at all and now they they’ve almost completed their lushness even in this one I’ve got some Joseph’s Co really hanging off over here is that all from up here y oh wow and this one I I just stuck some of that over wintered Joseph’s coat in there and when I stuck it in here before it was just kind of twigs and look it it’s really it’s coming out now the hotter it gets the happier this will be this whole composition will be yeah and all of these these pinks the sun patients the pentas I’m having a pent Sun patient moment this is a pink and kind of yellow Lantana and this is more of that veran so that’s that’s really filled up and you can see here’s another example of that over here it was just Twigs when I put it in there and now it’s really starting to fill out and I put it at regular intervals kind of along the sidewalk leading up to the front door as I did look at how big it’s already doubled in size the cat Mint or the NEPA look at how look at how much it has grown and then I had my scabiosa that I put in there and then this is a the new thing that I’ve added I’ve added some pentas here so this is going to be a butterfly pollinator Little Dream World right here once all of this stuff fills out you can see there’s a couple of areas I need to put some new mulch down and I will do that in all my free time yeah I will I will do that um one thing that it’s really it’s gotten a little bit I’m not going to say aggressive but it it’s just very very happy and that’s all of this manow and lace and it’s everywhere isn’t it it’s one of my favorite cut flowers so I I don’t want to pull any of it out I just keep using it as cut flowers what I will do is probably after I’m gone for a couple days I’ll come back and I’ll tackle it then there are certain things I’m not going to tackle now and I’ll tell you why because we have the possibility of big thunderstorms coming and all of this who knows what may happen to it it might be completely squished it might get hiled on and I will save that grooming for later but all of this manow and lace and by the way I will have tons of seed of it looks but I mean it’s just I think it’s just gorgeous and the pollinators just love it and I love it in every I mean this is why I love it as a cut flour because the fness the delicacy of it the strong stems is just one of my it adds a whole lot in like just the even though it’s white which I know is which adds a lot the color yeah it really stands out from the distance you really see it and here’s a here’s a little trivia I may have shared this in the past um Catherine heer’s favorite flower was Queen an’s lace of which this is a cousin this stuff here is also good for clay soil and this is verbina benari Anis and some people like it and some people hate it but I love that purple color and actually it was this composition that I saw in an inspiration pick that is on my bulletin board okay let’s let’s take a break and I’m going to show you something else oh my goodness we’re waiting for gusts we’re always waiting for a loud car or a motorcycle or in this case a gust of wind to pass by so you can hear me so sadly very sadly another video that I promised you was that I was going to have Dave the tree guy Dave the arborist who was going to come here and he was going to talk with me about how to prune our trees how to feed our Evergreens how to feed our trees and in an organic way and he we were supposed to shoot that this morning and very sadly he had a tendon edery in his arm and ended up in the ER today so he couldn’t so um our good wishes to you Dave you can see though that I had already kind of started to work without him and I had really elevated the canopy on this red bud tree a little bit and thinned it out so steuart if you can maybe compare this tree which I’ve thinned out a bit to those trees red bud trees over there that I haven’t thinned out you can see that this looks a little bit more sculptural and I never worry too much that I’ve over pruned it because this time of year the growth and the the leaves will be replenished almost immediately but in this way while they are still smaller I can start training them in the way I want them to grow like I did at the old house had some of those long long arching branches and it was very transparent you could see through it to other things so this one I have started using my my battery operated works pruners I did all of this last evening now I need to clean up the remains of the day and this stuff not only will have better air circulation but the things underneath it will have a little bit better light now while I’m over here you may notice this tuft of dying foliage so this is an experiment right here because it’s not a real obvious experiment and because it’s just right here kind of hidden behind this Holly I decided that I was going to see if I could get some tulips to come back next year so because this is on a slope because I know because it’s on a slope it will have better drainage and because there’s nothing else really over here this is kind of a um meh area I don’t do a lot of planting it won’t get overwatered so I’m just this is my experiment I’m just going to leave this TFT right here of tulips and see if they come back now I’m seeing some clippings here that I did of the Holly by the way you can also do this with clippings of boxwood and that is just remove the lower leaves and this time of year now it’s probably it probably wouldn’t work in the dead of Summer but this time of year when we’re getting regular consistent rainfall and the temperatures are rather moderate then literally I can propagate something I’m looking for a stick here you guys I can propagate an evergreen in some cases even a perennial just by doing this oh the garden Magic The Garden magic I just stick a hole in the ground I take this cutting I have removed the bottom leaves again this works with Holly it works with box wood and it’s a good way to start topiary if you get a really long clipping but at the leaf node where the leaf attached to the stem that is where Roots will come out and I can just stick this in here and hopefully if it gets adequate moisture it will take hold and I’ll have a whole another free plant now typically when I do it I don’t do it on an area that’s really exposed to the wind and the high heat I’ll do it in an area that’s a little bit more protected so in this case I would do it probably behind something I’ve got some more clippings here again I’m going to remove these bottom leaves I’m going to take this and I’m just going to stick it in the ground now after I prune an evergreen my boxwood next time I prune my boxwood I’ll show you you’re going to have lots of clippings you’re going to have lots of snippings so I can do that with almost all of my clippings or as many as I want just stick them in the ground in different locations and probability based on how amable that clipping was to the conditions to the weather and soil conditions if I bat 50% that’s 50% more than I would have had if I didn’t do it and and if I had a 100 pieces of clipping or I had 100 pieces of boxwood and I just batted 50% that’s pretty good and I have 50 free Plants yeah so I think that’s a great tip particularly if you are gardening on a budget okay let’s take a break here I’m going to show you a couple of other things that and then we’re going to call it a Wednesday okay come on over to the east side and on your way please enjoy how beautiful the remains of the roses and the and the Fox Glove are going to be done pretty soon and momentarily I’ll show you what I do with a Fox Glove after they’re finished blooming but before I do that I wanted to show you I continue weeding whenever I am out here no matter how small and insignificant the weed I continue to weed and by the way a great weeder is an old bread knife look for this at the at the thrift store if you go thrifting but I’m going to use it here as a pointer to show you that for a while I was despairing that I saw so few seedlings so few starts of germinated clomi seeds and I am starting to see them it must be that it’s gotten warm enough so there’s one there there’s one there there’s one here and they’re starting to appear in and throughout here now will I have as many as I did last year no why because all of my surrounding plants have gotten a lot bigger and I don’t have as much need for annuals the other thing is I’ve decided to plant some dollas in here so look at this Dalia and you can also see that I pinched it and you can see the two tiny little buds that are coming up on either side that will keep it bushier it will keep it um oh I think a little bit more intact from the wind protect it from the wind the other thing it will do and most importantly is I will get more blooms that way okay lastly on this Windy Wednesday Walkabout so many of you have asked okay what did I do what do I do with a Fox Glove when they’re finished well you will notice that as the beautiful little tubular flowers oh look right there Stuart look at that it’s unusual colors swallow it looks like a swallow tail isn’t it gorgeous really beautiful and it’s holding its own against this wind really likes that larksburg um but you’ll notice that as the tubular flowers begin to expire and drop what they leave behind are these wonderful pods and these are seed pods now right now they are way way too green to harvest and at this point I can do a couple of different things I can dead head them and if I dead headed it here this is a good example Stuart I could dead head it here cut this off and it would put out a smaller little Bloom maybe like that or even smaller here and probably on the other side but it’s really not such a much and the other thing is I don’t want to cut this off because I want to save a bunch of this seed so I want it to go ahead and mature on the stock so I am not going to do that I’m going to mark this as pink and I’m going to let this dry and save some of the seed another reason that I don’t like to keep this for the Long Haul because it’s a bial it puts out its foliage uh in one season and then it blooms in the next is because I have found that over time it’s it it is just very very prone to spidermite and I don’t want to leave it in the ground to attract spidermite that would then affect the surrounding it so I’m going to leave it here I’m going to let not all of it but some of it I’m going to let the seed mature it will mature from the bottom up and then I will start collecting the seed and what does this seed look like well the immature seed but you’ll open the pod and you can you see the green seeds right there yeah yeah when the pot dries obviously these seeds are very tiny they will go everywhere I will save some of the seed and allow some of the seed to drop in place and obviously I’ll save some from gifts by the way this is my favorite variety of Fox Glove and it’s called excelsia um like exceler and it it grows taller a little bit more statuesque and I just I I like its grandury versus like little foxy and some of the others this is my favorite variety so on that note from the cottage on the Hill from a very loud blower across the street and from this gorgeous butterfly that steuart will try to zoom in on whole time oh now it flew away went over here it went over there got it at that from our Cottage Garden to yours have a great Wednesday [Music] [Music]

  1. Wishing you good luck in trying to get your tulip bulbs to rebloom next year. My old bulbs are doing it for 30 years . I live in northern Germany. Love your videos and hope that no tornadoes will hit your area.

  2. Zone 8a Raleigh NC has seen an uptick in severe weather which is of course concerning! I’m struggling with the boxwood basil. I’m going to try direct seeding! Thanks

  3. Just wanted to compliment your beautiful garden and ask for forgiveness even if you don’t know why. 😂🤭 When you’ve talked about your salvia I’ve rolled my eyes every time because I have WEST Friesland salvia in several places in my garden.
Today I googled it and learned there are two separate salvias and not a wrong saying. Sorry Linda! ❤😅

  4. The southeast has always been a tornado alley as well. I've lived in Alabama my whole life and tornadoes have always been a part of life for us, unfortunately.

  5. Just watched Jim Putnam control his Rhythm and blues salvia. Such a hummingbird magnet. Maybe the weather is from climate change? Pollution, the effect of fossil fuel burning.

  6. I occurred to me that the bottom portion of the cloche could be used to support peonies. I think I will get some of these!

  7. Love your garden… Can you tell me what is a good shrub that grows high enough to plant at the border of my property to give me privacy from a city back property that is used for walking, hiking, etc I don’t want the pine trees but a pretty bush that is deer free and grows high enough to make an edging, I live in NY . Thank you

  8. As someone who just had a close call with flooding in the Houston area, I pray that you are all ok. Linda – I worried about you but it looks like you have escaped this time. Thank you for the Tuesday/Wednesday walk about!

  9. Thanks for all your information – especially foxgloves — let me no where u bought your round thingys to stop the hose from ruining plants ..

  10. Your flower garden is just beautiful! I love how your neighbor enjoys your beautiful yard! No place like the south!

  11. Our tornado watches/warnings in Michigan were Tuesday this week. Much damage in certain areas. Our meteorologists did an excellent job with warnings. So grateful no fatalities. Lake Michigan (the "big lake") protects us a lot in west Michigan.

  12. I need me some Linda, so yay and Good Morning! Yes, we are part of Tornado Valley in west TN, zone 8a, Fayette County. My screenshots were blurry, and it took a minute to figure out what salvia you named: SALLYROSA JUMBO PINK (Salvia nemorosa). Yours is gorgeous!

  13. Southwest Missouri here, just lost 80% of our trees to an EF1 …huge old growth, even civil war oaks, maples, sweet gum…beautiful mature trees all gone. We are luckily no injuries and our house is fine….but losing those trees is hard. I cried. Now we are in a fish bowl with no privacy….we have 3 acres. Looks like time for new plantings and new landscape design. Not how i would have wanted to do it but ill enjoy the challenge

  14. I grew up in Florida, dealing with tornadoes, tropical storms, hurricanes, daily summer thunderstorms, you name it. Now happily gardening in Western Washington State where we are sooooo very lucky weather wise. All we really deal with is a long, grey & rainy winter with the occasional short spring hail storm, and (increasingly) wildfire smoke in mid-late summer. Definitely don't miss dealing with the catastrophic weather! Hope your beautiful garden fares well in the storms.

  15. I really enjoyed this episode. I was shocked when you cut back the salvia so severely, you always have such great tips.

  16. Planted my globe master alliums with morning light maiden grass to hide the allium leaves, the maiden grass is slow to fill out and the alliums look like they are popping out of that beautiful silver, shimmering grass that blows naturally with the spring wind.

  17. Linda, my town Columbia, TN was hit last night. It was terrifying. Many homes hit. One casualty. So sad. Yes, I believe Tornado Alley is expanding.

  18. Maybe plant the alliums under your hydrangeas. That way it hides the foliage. Yes, our town has been completely destroyed by tornadoes twice in my lifetime.so a little nervous tonight watching the weather!

  19. Linda, I am always thrilled when you “take a chance” and experiment in your garden!! That is the fun and the beauty of gardening!
