Grown over garden! Any advice

Grown Over Garden // Advice

Moved into a house with a very designated garden area (even found old garlic skins)

Problem: garden is pretty grown over (picture) how do I go about restoring this for vegetable planting in a preferred affordable way?

Can I just till the soil as it’s still pretty soft? Should I add anything for nutrients into the soil (old dinner/fruit/meat/food scraps)

Should I mix in some bags of topsoil ?

Can I just simply till the soil and smoothen it out and move forward with creating lanes then direct seeding?

I’m rather newer to growing vegetables and I understand some basic concepts, but starting a garden from an older “abandoned” one is quite confusing for me!

Any advice is welcome!

That looks better than my yearly garden area 😂

I have to say I’d kill for a plot of land like that.

Run some hogs through there really intensively

What you should do is seed a cover crop, cut it down, and leave it on the soil over winter. It will partially break down and also keep weeds and grass from coming up. Depending on what you want to grow, you can start them in a greenhouse and transplant into the ground in spring, or clear some cover in areas where you want to sow seeds directly.

Alfalfa is great for the restoration of nutrients in the soil. It is cheap and easy to grow as well. It’s just one of many possibilities anyway. Best of luck, and keep us posted, please, and thank you!
