Neighbor’s Mint

Neighbor had mint planted in this raised bed years ago, but as I was walking by the other day it looks like the mint is beginning to break through the cracks and potentially reach the ground. This bed is near the edge of the property line. How long do I have until my front lawn becomes a mint farm?

It’s already to their lawn so they are in for a treat by the end of summer. Not sure how long until it gets to you but it will slowly be making its way lol

You’re going to have your own mint soon

My neighbor thanked me for giving him mint to plant 😉 I should plan to move once his mint takes over his yard

That mint is likely in the ground already, I’ve seen mint escape so many “enclosures” at my local community garden  Edit: yeah if you look closer you can see sprigs of it already growing outside the box on the right side of the box

How has mint not taken over the world yet?

Mint doesn’t like to be mowed as frequently as you would mow a lawn. My neighbors killed several of my mints in the shared front yard by mowing over them (to them, everything that doesn’t has a store label still attached must be a weed, no plants identification skills whatsoever).

They spread through underground runners too. Careful

It is slowly creeping towards the photographer as the theme music from *Jaws* plays in the background.

Long as it’s mowed it will be fine.

This is a national security risk.

You’re going to need at least four M1 Abrams, three F22’s, an A-10 Warthog and Air Craft carrier brought in for supporting operations.

At least mowing the lawn will get a nice, minty smell.

I think it’s well in its way to being your mint. I see it all through that yard!

Depending on the weather, it could be months or weeks before it’s a lawn of mint. It’s a challenge to remove but not impossible.

I bought a house that previous owners had planted mint in the garden. It’s been 3 years of hard battles – ripping down to the roots, various plant killing sprays, every imaginable curse – and I still haven’t gotten it all.

This photo gives me great anxiety.

If you live in a fairly hot, dry area, and you yank up the mint a couple of times a year, you can usually keep it under control.

But yeah, it is definitely already escaping. You will have mint very soon.

The mint is coming to get you.

It’s going to be your mint very soon when it starts growing in your yard.

People freak out about mint, growing up we always had mint planted in the ground, my parents have bushes that are 20+ years old. It’s not hard to control if you just purposely control it. In the fall and the spring we just go rip out the parts that are getting escapey. Either dry the leaves for tea, make sachets or just give it away! It won’t act like a weed if you don’t let it grow like one

Mint doesn’t tolerate regular mowing very well. Keep an eye on that area and mow it.

I have mint in a gardening bed. Love it! It grows pretty fast! Eradicated 95% of it this past year and it’s already spreading again. Easy to pull. Don’t worry. It’s a fun herb

My grandma use to have a bed of mint it never spread cause she maintained it by clipping and pulling what’s not needed keeping up with the area etc.

it was fun to chew on as a kid, but
toxic to pets from what I read it’s the only reason I havnt planted it is cause I have 2 dogs I don’t want to risk them ingesting it

Weirdly enough, I’ve had mint in my/my parent’s yard for years in the ground in a tiny area for well over a decade and it’s never spread. I’m curious as to how it hasn’t as I’ve learned from this sub that mint spreads like wildfire.

this is mint’s world and we’re just living in it
