Hydroponics

Soil temperature

Hello Reddit!
I have a few Hydroponic towers I made this year and had a quick question. I searched all over to try and find the answer to this question but had no luck. I’m trying to gauge when I can bring my hydroponic peppers, tomatoes and other various veggies outside. I initially planned to do it last week but our temps have been getting down to low 40s Fahrenheit at night and anywhere from 50s-70s during the day.

All the information I find about when to move plants outside mentions the soil temp needing to be above 60. Based on that, if I keep the water in the reservoir at 65ish, is that what would be considered soil temp or does the ambient air temp need to stay above a certain amount?

I’d recommend waiting til outdoor temps at least don’t dip below 55f, but that’s just my instincts talking. If it helps any I have Chinese green onions outside in little dwc jars and at night it’s around 40f and apparently they “prefer between 68 and 77” and to not set them out til above 28f and they’re growing extremely slow

I don’t have anything to heat or cool the water

If your medium stays in the 60s (preferably mid to high 60s they) will grow well. As long as ambient is not freezing.

Soil temperature really translates to root temperature as far as the plants are concerned, so if you have a flood and drain system it will pull that cold air into the roots as it drains. If it’s kratky or dwc though the roots should be fine. Even if they get a little colder they will likely be fine but will grow very slow.

If it helps, the peppers are already very grown. Showed up already pretty tall and a couple had a flower on them. The rest of the veggies are in seed trays and quickly outgrowing them
