In good insect news, BSFL have taken over my composter

Black soldierfly larvae (BSFL) have once again taken over my compost bin and are ravenously eating everything in it, including the larvae of other flies, and making compost.

The adults are not pesty. Although the adults look scary, they don’t have stingers nor biting mouth parts, they don’t tend to hang around humans, and they barely eat so they don’t go after food. The adults mainly mate, lay eggs, then die (or are eaten by birds). Birds and lizards of all kinds love the larvae that drop out of the bin.

One of my favorite insect partners in my garden.

  1. I raise those for my chickens. They do wonders for my compost as well.
