Orchids

I broke the spike off, what now?

I noticed that it was curling back into itself. Tried to coax it up, ended up breaking it. Will this spike continue to grow or that was it?

If there’s an intact node, it could initiate a branch. From the image, I can’t tell if there’s a node or if it broke too low.

I did this once. Mine had an intact node so I was hopeful but nothing happened, it did not grow another spike. Perhaps you will have more luck.

I did this over a month ago and was **devastated**.

Luckily the orchid was so damn determined to have flowers that it sent up a new leaf and not too long after that a new flower spike came out.

To answer your question, mine did not continue to grow after breaking off at the base.

it will bloom again, the plant has the energy to spike and breaking the first spike didn’t use up that energy. Be patient it will happen

Mine broke off this short and it branched out. 🤞

Thank you all for the reassuring words 😅

Wait for the next spike and learn from the experience. You are not alone. It happens a lot

Cry. Rage. Curse the heavens. Hope for the best. Move on.

How you traverse the 5 stages of grief is up to you 😂

I seem to do this every year with one of my phals. I use it as an opportunity to consider the brief nature of our time on earth.

I’m sad for you, but it’s a part of the phalaenopsis journey. I don’t know anybody who hasn’t broken something at one point or another.

How your plant will respond depends very much on its genetics: how determined it is to bloom (and given that spike was coming from below only one leaf it seems *very* determined), and its overall health (looks fab). You might get another spike, or maybe it will wait for its next bloom season (these vary, again it’s genetics/parentage, some seem to bloom twice a year!). In any case, your plant will go on and will bloom again. You haven’t stunted it, and whatever energy is now saved will go into future flower production, one way or another.

But if this means you have no flowers and you had been SO looking forward to them, my personal answer has always been to, well, go get another one. 😉

This happened to mine not too long ago! I also shared a post. Agnes had an accident that involved her human mother accidentally hip chucking her off the table… Her new flower spike broke off part way when she hit the ground. Sprinkle some cinnamon on the tip of that wound and hopefully she’ll send up or branch out a new shoot!

I haven’t seen mine do anything different yet but I suppose Agnes still has time.

Just an FYI, I name my orchids so if you’re wondering who Agnes is….she’s my orchid 😆

Give yourself a hug 🤗 I hope you get another spike!

Orchids are some of the heartiest plants I know. I had one that had no leaves and mostly dead roots. It bloomed a year later. Ive also broken off flowering shoots and they always come back a month or 2.
