They go dormant I think, and wake back up when conditions are favorable. At least that's what I've observed.
I apologize for the quality. This biosphere has a pretty strong water cycle and things are a little humid.

Moss is tougher than a lot of people think. It can survive many different conditions.
I had java moss glued on a twig for months sitting dry in a box. I threw it into a tank and it started growing. Its wild.
