This “spontaneous tomato patch” phenomena can happen if you put a bunch of old tomatoes in your compost, which, depending on where and when you apply your compost, can result in a large number of evenly distributed tomato seeds in the perfect germination medium.
To confirm, try pinching the leaves or stem and giving them a smell – tomato plants have a very distinctive aroma, especially when squashed or bruised.
