hi everyone welcome back to Garden it’s been a beautiful late April morning here the sun just typically gone behind a cloud as a press record but hopefully now the last of the severe hard Frost is behind us and it’s time to start looking ahead plans at this Gunner up they’re growing fantastically well and how could I not start a video next to this amazing plan but today I want to share with you three more plans which look Majestic in May three Beauties which really make my garden my garden at this time of year I’ve done videos talking about Evergreen plants or winter interest I’ve talked about plants which really come into their own in early spring but as those plants now are fading solely into the background it’s time for some really colorful vibrant stunners to come to the front of stage so let’s get into them for the first planting question then we’re heading to my Mediterranean exotic Five pit project area and looming over the area is this beautiful Euphoria this is euphobia John Phillips it’s a gorgeous Evergreen Mound a beautiful look and vigorous plant yes it’s an evergreen so it looks fantastic in winter but at this time of year it really comes alive as you can probably see there’s bees on it there’s flies everything is attracted to these flowers and whilst this beautiful foliage plant is primarily grown for this huge array of lush leaves to me when these flowers come out it really is one of the most impressive plants in the garden the scent is an incredibly rich honey wafting in the breeze it really is a plant which transports you the Mediterranean very tough very Hardy in all but the coldest winters to me this is a plant which belongs in any exotic Mediterranean or I suppose really any foliage Garden where you prioritize Evergreen interest but the flowers although they only last a few weeks to me they bring so much to the Garden an absolutely beautiful plant and when you see it in the evening Light bathing in the Golden Glow it really does look a special as any other Palm or exotic here in my garden and if you’re buying this plant don’t be afraid to start small I bought this one from Craig over at grow Paradise in 2020 and it was a tiny little 2 L plant I think a small rooted cut in and now it’s well over 2 and 1/2 M across check out the plant at Pang Global to see just how big it can get this is a huge plant a very vigorous plant that wants to be a large Mound but if you’ve got the space I don’t think you’ll get an exotic Mediterranean look as fine as this from many other plants so if you’ve got a sunny well- drained spot in your garden I don’t think you’ll go wrong with euphobia John Phillips for the next planting question we’re heading into the jungle area of my garden and if I push through here you’ll be able to see a view which admittedly looks so much more spectacular early this morning this plant here this beautiful firm is a shutter coock or ostrich firm as you can see Remia sausage dog he pleased to see it just look at that vibrant green even though the sun’s gone behind a cloud that green really sings an absolutely beautiful F and if there’s one plant that you could just grow in a damp Shady border that will gently spread and bring impact and vibrancy without any effort this F’s got to be up there it does spread very nicely creating beautiful colonies of these gorgeous lime green bronze a beautiful Fern it needs more moisture than some ferns but you’re rewarded with this fantastic vibrant lovely display of beautiful greens to me this is a fern which absolutely sums up may here in my garden it captures that energy the Majesty of spring and this is a plant which although it does tend to fade a little bit before a lot of the tropical plants really get going if you want something to really bright up Spring borders something to pair with per carrias with with hosters I think introducing a small Colony shut cot ferns is an absolutely great place to start for my third PL today I could easily go for one the fat seers the Sheffer of taiwaniana those new leaves just starting to burst free there but no I’m going to go for a plant which is often a lot more widely available a plant you don’t really need any skill to grow and that plan is the simple hooka now hookas they’re not a tropical stand style plant you can grow them with lots of different planting schemes they pair well with a Cottage Garden well let’s be honest with basically any style of garden but to me there’s few of the plants which can easily provide such a bright shot of col to Garden this is one that I’ve recently added to my garden here that is Huka Grande amethyst which does admittedly sound like a hipster coffee but it certainly looks beautiful you probably can’t see in this light here but there is a real soft a pearlescent Sheen to the leaves almost the same as rice in this giant purple it really is a stunner under this light it looks slightly more matte but as soon as that sun comes out and you can really see that purple Sheen it’s just incredible here I’ve got it paired with a per area but to be honest with you these plants can grow well with so many other exotic and tropical Style Plants it’s our old house I had a mixture of bananas Pals all kinds of different foliage plants and then at the front of it I used a combination of colus as summer beding and hookas to really bring that vibrancy that color and just looking at this section of Border here admittedly this is my sort of red purple end of the Border but you could very easily create a tropical theme border using nothing but hookas picaras like this red dragon here and a few of choice ferns to really bring the color so let’s be honest as much as we all want to gr Garden full of tropical Rarities unusual plant them all around the world sometimes it really is helpful to have areas your garden that simply get on and do the thing and given a spot that doesn’t dry out too much in summer like this one here Remy’s just checking given a spot like this that’s relatively sheltered nice damped soil dappled sunlight hookas really are incredibly easy to grow the only problem I’ve come across with hookas is with Vine Weevil that can be an issue so if your plant struggling often that can be the cause but speaking they’re very easy plants given a spot where the soil doesn’t completely drought and for most colors has a bit of shelter from the strongest sunlight so here in the dapple shade of my jungle Garden they grow very well so a top tip if you’re shopping at G Center on nursy this weekend you want a bright pop of color and don’t want something you have to worry about in Winter or fuf around with Protec a new growth in spring hookers get on and do the thing and my best advice will be go for a few of them go big get some color in your garden and it’s a great way of achieving that tropical effect while a lot of the genuinely tropical plants are still just about waking up so thanks for watching today’s quick video just a few of the plants which to me really bring that vibrancy that spring color to my garden just as things are really getting going and hopefully we all see some warm of this next week it’s certainly been a long time coming so thanks for watching and I’ll see you all very soon bye

  1. Nice one George. I’ve got all three. Heuchera are a real winner. Easy to propagate too. I’ve also got heucherella which have better flowers and flower for longer. Last cold night for us here last night, so it’s all systems go now.

  2. Looks amazing fella. Just started a new semi tropical style garden up on north east coast of the UK and your videos have really helped. Never been so jealous of someone elses garden 😂

  3. Always look forward to your videos George, you have a good presenter’s voice. I grow some of my shuttlecock ferns at the base of the tree ferns. The lime green fronds are set off against the dark trunks. I’m not a huge fan of heucheras, but the amethyst looks nice and I have recently noticed some new varieties with contrasting vein detail… I may try for ground cover. I’ve recently discovered Bergenia, there are many varieties, excellent flowers this time of year, begonia type leather foliage giving good ground cover, cheap as chips and hardy as. My new favorite filler.

  4. Omg that's more money 😂 at least I don't have to find more room on my window seal where my banana plants are enjoying the sun😊 thanks George.

  5. Got to say mate your gardens really starting to look bang on! Something completely out of mine and most others imagination! Been following your Mediterranean fire pit area and that euphorbia is definitely on my wish list! Question – have you ever tried oleander? Recently got a white flowering one, think next to that euphorbia would look good! 💭

  6. Great Vid George … love different colour Heuchera, got many in my garden just for that reason.. colour, along with different ferns which seem to be growing very well now.. everything seems to be coming to life and pushing out new growth… just waiting for the gingers to show up lol 🙂

  7. I bought a couple of ostrich ferns to plant but have not done hope it’s not too late. I see you like Heuchera I love Coleous what a stunner of rich colors

  8. Yes I'm already onboard with all of those. The shuttlecock ferns have spread so fast I'm talking 2 or 3 metres in one year! Great form though. My John Phillips was, like yours, a 2L cutting in 2022 and is now a metre high and wide. Also amazed how large the rosette of leaves are! Got several heucheras of varying colour and amazingly they were evergreen this winter. My azalea has been a spring highlight this year but other than that I'm still putting structural foliage plants in. (And lots of unfinished hard landscaping). Can't wait until it's actually warm!

  9. Starting AND finishing on the gunnera is just unnecessary George! 🙄🤣🤣🤣

All looking absolutely gorgeous, love my shuttlecock ferns this time of year too. My others faves are the rheums, already showing nice big ish leaves.

How good is Remi? He looks so much like Frankie, but Frank would be frantically digging your gorgeous borders 😂 As you know all my stuff is in pots and he's bad enough for getting to those 🙄

    Thanks for sharing as always.

P.s. Hipster Coffee made me laugh 😂

  10. Great short video George. I always look forward to your posts. I stopped growing Heuchera for the exact reason you said however I replaced them with some amazing tall double begonias which were amazing in the same soil. I'm trying to grow things that don't seem to have many pests and begonias are ticking my boxes!

  11. I am proper into the Heuchera at the moment ! I agree they bring an awesome front to the tropical backdrop. Those Gunneras look crazy big already!

  12. That's the one I was referring to! The Euphorbia x pasteurii ‘John Phillips. Gonna have to get one. Love the fern too. How big do the Heuchera grow?

  13. Don't get me started with Heuchera's and pesky vine weevils! I find they are best split each year and spread out to limit the risk of them getting attacked.

On an unrelated note, have you thought about checking on Google Earth to see if you can see those Gunneras via satellite? 😁

  14. Heuchera are so underrated and don't get the spotlight they deserve!
These plants have aweome foliage with a myriad of colors, they are resilient, winterhardy, low-maintenance, and exceptionally beautiful 🍁
