hi everyone and welcome back to the Garden today the project is going to be to plant the dollas that we started a few weeks ago into the ground I was going to plant them in the raised beds but those got filled up with seedlings and with seeds and strawberries and so I’ve got to find a new spot for them in the Garden today so why don’t you join me today while we create this new spot in the garden and get the dollas in the ground such a pretty day today there are no clouds in the sky it was very cool yesterday but today much warmer okay and just for a recap of what we did a few weeks ago I took all of the dollas and put them in pots for now so that they could Sprout and you can see some of them have really sprouted a lot and some of them are sprouting but have some very tiny starts but it is alive so it started and then the third one in this group I don’t see any starts on it so it might have been a dud but uh some of them are really quite large and they’re all definitely ready to go in the ground and it’s warm enough for them so that’s going to be the plan okay so I’m standing at the Flower Shed right now where the dollas currently are in the pots so this space back here I think is where I want to put the dollas in the ground I need to go and create the space for them there get some compost in dig the holes um get the dollas planted in there and then create a support structure for them as well so if I come up through the center aisle of the orchard I think right here at the back will be the perfect place for the Dalia bed it is well- draining soil so that’ll be good and it is full sun for most of the day so the dollas will love that so I think I have 27 dollas over there to plant and then I also found this set that I had missed last time so there’s three of these this one’s called orange impact and so that means I need to do about 30 spots [Applause] [Applause] okay and just for a closer look at what I have here I’ve got six steaks wooden steaks some twine and a mallet and something to cut the twine with I’ve got some plant tone to put in a starter fertilizer and I’ve got my power planter to dig the holes I’ve got three tubers that I missed last time and then I’ve got all of the others lined up and I think that this is the way I’m going to go ahead and plant them because I don’t want them necessarily to be in a double row and just be backed up to the woods and if I’m here in the center where all of these will be when I turn around through the orchard it’ll be lined up exactly with the Flower Shed So I think that’ll be pretty dolls are a great addition to your garden they attract pollinators they have a variety of colors in bloom shapes they are long lasting blooms as cut flowers and they’re long lasting in the garden as well dollas thrive in the Sun so pick a space in your garden that gets a lot of sun throughout the day dig the holes about 6 to 8 in deep and wide enough to accommodate the Dalia tubers without crowding them add fertilizer um before you plant them like a slow release organic fertilizer but then you can fertilize them about every 4 to 6 weeks after you’ve got them all snug in then you’ll want to water them thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure good contact between the roots in the soil you want to keep the soil consistently moist but not water loged during the growing season and don’t forget to include some sort of support system for your dalas as they grow taller they’ll start to flop over to plant the tubers I’m just going to make the spot for it make sure that the neck is facing up and the roots are facing down and then place it in the hole and I’m going to cover it just up to the neck area if I find any extra tuber pieces I’ll go ahead and stick them in in case they might grow however um if I have some of the ones that are potted that didn’t Sprout I’ll check them as I put them in the ground and if any of the pieces are rotten then I’ll just throw those out so I’ll do the same thing with each one of these uh in the next section so you’ll see me um make the spot for it and then take it out of the pot they have really good root boots on them already and so I’ll make sure that those are covered and that the soil comes up to the neck of the Dalia I’ll just put the paper tag in the soil right by the dollia variety so that I’ll know which one is in which place in the garden and I’ll go back later and put in tags for each one [Music] okay so I got them all in the ground these two I lost their tag so I’ll have to go back and look at my previous video when I talked about potting these up to find out which is the one that I don’t have the tag for so glad I videoed it but what I’ve done is I’ve just dug the the original tag that came with the Dalia in the ground right beside so I can see where a new variety starts and I’ll go back through and do regular tags for them so made quite a mess here that I’ve got to clean up but the next step before it gets dark is to try to put the steaks in and I have six wooden T wooden posts that I’m going to uh get in the ground and then I’m going to string twine around those to try to keep the dollas supported as they grow right now they don’t need anything but I’m going to go ahead and put the supports in so it’s there when they need it okay so this is what we have so far I’ll probably go back in and put those steaks in a little bit deeper um but for right now the dollas don’t need them but you can see how I crisscross the string the twine in between the post and then also ran it along the bottom on another level so they have both the top and the bottom level and six post for support so hopefully this will at least get them started and when they need a little bit more support I could always put in Te poost or something as they grow last thing they need is a good soak thanks for watching as we found a new spot for the dollas and the garden I’ll see you in the next video Happy gardening [Music]
