No wonder this plant was dying (I grabbed it off a discount cart at Rona). It had two of these plastic pods in soggy soil. Now I feel bad that I didn't get the rest of them. I think the original price was like $30 too. Ugh. Hopefully they're happier now separated into two fresh pots without these horrible plastic cages.

I think these are the same plants!
As my picture above:
I bought this Chinese evergreen about a month ago and I kept looking at it i don’t know why but i just got a bad feeling somethingwasnt right.
…curious so I decided to open her up and re pot.
And found this dumb shit. I was pissed off.
3 little pots all tangled together.
Haven’t come across the plastic pots but I’ve found the mesh netting stuff still attached to a few plants. I think it expedited my alocasias (possible) demise, still hoping it comes back around.
So many people think they can’t keep a plant because of this and they stop trying, never knowing they were set up to fail from the start.
UGH!! 😫 that’s HORRIBLE! Definitely have had my fair share of plant abuse – glad you decided to repot them and give them a chance! I had a Hoya bought online a year ago (I learned my lesson there lol) and it was basically a whole bunch of cuttings stick together in a giant mess of soggy soil and that wrapping stuff. Half of the “plant” died, and I repotted her in leca and moss in a sec-watering pot. It took her a good couple of months to regain her strength back and she’s finally putting out new leaves! I swear she was almost a goner!
Your day looks like mine!

Ugh, I have about 7 or 8 Aglaonemas, and 5 of them have those dumb little pots. I’ll look into removing them when the weather gets warmer, but my heart sank when I was going around the pots feeling for those plastic things 😖
Those are net pots for a hydroponics system.
i had the exact same experience purchasing a chinese evergreen from home depot. this is why i always repot immediately after purchase. everytime. rubberbands, mesh, plugs…all of the things. repot. repot. repot!
Those pots don’t kill anything. Roots mash up in all different ways and I don’t see how this picture shows them not being able to absorb nutrients and water. This is another myth that’s perpetuated through social media.
I found a couple of new plants, and started slowly repotting and checking every one of my 100+ plants 😅. I found 3 plastic and so many of the mesh ones that had torn a little but were still very much in tact and restricting growth. They are so annoying!!!! I check every new plant now- I even found some on my new outdoor plants 😡😡
