Help! New Homeowner Overwhelmed!

Hi all!

My husband and I recently purchased this sweet & simple brick ranch but we’re completely lost on what to do with the front yard. The front beds need redone and are nothing but weeds at this point… with the exception of one (I think?) rose bush in the middle. Neither one of us are green thumbs and are okay with some maintenance but definitely need something relatively hardy to withstand our learning! Don’t mind that we need to mow the grass in that photo😂

Specs on the yard: The two large trees give quite a bit of shade, especially now that it’s spring and the leaves are back. The sun goes across the house east to west as opposed to front to backyard north/south so it’s definitely partially shaded. I also know we’re in 7b and the area is slightly more moist due to the slight downgrade from the road and lack of direct sunlight. We are not sold on the river rock lining the beds either. They put those things everywhere!

We are open to any and all advice or ideas! We don’t have thousands to drop on a brand new landscape, however, we have to do something because it’s looking pretty sad!! The executive dysfunction is real on this one for me!

I would start by adding a walk to the front door from the driveway and a driveway too depending on condition or existence of your current one.

If you want to keep the beds in front of the house and get rid of the stones, you can dig an edge with shovel around the bed or steel/aluminum/ plastic edging is also available.

With the way your “lawn” looks it maybe possible to bring it back but it would surely be easier to turn it all over and start fresh.

For plants only you know what you like so you should search Google image search, include your zone, shade and flood tolerate
