New Emerald Green Arborvitae

Hi everyone,

My neighbor and I recently got backyard fences put in at the same time. They wanted a privacy fence, so we were sort of forced to use their fence wall. Not a big deal at all, but we want to “hide” it with a hedge. We weren’t exactly sure what type of plant to use, but knew an arborvitae hedge would look great. We found decently sized emerald green arborvitae on sale at Menards for $40 each this past weekend and had to act fast because the sale was ending on Sunday. We purchased 14 of them and got them all in the ground as fast as we could. We dug holes double the size of the root ball, added some amended soil to the bottom and then topped the hole with what we dug out. We had our yard landscaping done last year so the soil is pretty decent. I plan to add some more amended soil to the tops this weekend along with manure and black mulch. I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips or feedback for us? How does our spacing look? We live in a windy area and some of them seem to be leaning a bit so we keep adjusting them. Any tips for making sure they stand and grow straight? We plan to maintain them around 7-8 feet tall, is that doable? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you

    Totally doable.

Mulch under them as mowing/trimming there will become a nightmare as they get larger.

Also give each of them about a gallon of water EVERY DAY for the first month. That will help them transition and get settled. The first year they will grow down and get good deep roots (hopefully) and then after that they should start to grow up and out.
