My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word ‘plan’ gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we’re at it.

hello and welcome back to Villa oliv
[Music]
oh okay okay
[Music]
m
good morning everyone we’ve got a lot of
stuff to unpack uh so that’s the first
thing that we’re going to do
what Mar
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
for
and thanks to this week’s sponsor which
are the parents of lyanna we gifted us
this couch so now we’ve got a new couch
so thank
you some someone is enjoing yourself
very good there’s the
spirit okay
and with that
done we have finished
unpacking on to the next stuff
[Music]
than
oh this smells so
good since the weather is so amazing now
we’re going to try to put a little bit
of work in our garden it’s a little bit
of a side quest but probably used to
that by now but the weather is
absolutely amazing so we’re going to
make use of that and um get these babies
in the ground so they can start growing
[Applause]
so we’re making the most out of our
lunch by making a calendar from when to
sew and uh we got all the seeds and
everything right there so we’re making a
one big schedule of when and how to sew
all the seeds
so day
three we’re going to try to plant some
of the seats in
these pots it is getting quite warm
already so we got quite a few herbs here
going to try to transplant those if
possible if we have a big enough pots
and we’re going to put all the seeds in
here
obviously this bit of the garden is
quite big and we’re going to make a
vegetable lot out of this right so this
whole point is going to be vegetable
garden also above the water there is
going to be vegetable garden so it’s
going to be quite a substantial part of
the garden uh and since it’s got to be
that big I think at some point it might
get its own part of this YouTube channel
so it going to be it’s going to be like
renovation type stuff for V Lea and then
V Lea gardening or something like a a
subcategory um since I don’t know if
everyone
is uh a big fan of gardening and
renovating a property like this so if
there’s any preference in keeping them
merged or separated then please do let
me
know so I’ve got quite some seeds of
various
plants so we’re going to try to
uh start with those and then later we’re
going to try to add garlic uh Ginger
potatoes stuff like
that so our main focus will be those and
then uh we’re going to try and see what
works in this Garden um and maybe focus
on that later oh onions I’ve got onions
so the main focus will be garlic
potatoes onions and ginger I think maybe
some zucchini some cett but uh we’ll see
so what we’ve tried to do was divide all
the fruits and vegetables into groups
that stimulate each other so that’s what
you can see here so for example we got
some cherry tomatoes some plum tomatoes
some parsley basil eggplant and cini
that hopefully will stimulate and work
well
together so we found these pots in the
garden
so it’s a nice time to use them
[Music]
so we got some strawberries
here so they’re doing quite all right
survived the winter so that’s
good so just need a little bit of clean
up here and there and then they should
be good good
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
okay
[Music]
next in the future obviously we’ll make
our own compost but for now we have to
deal with this because
the garden is still a jungle
so so these are the groups that we’ve
made and the the vegetables and herbs
that we’re going to try to plant
[Applause]
so now we’re just going to sort through
all of these things that we bought match
them with the group the groups that
we’ve made and then we’re going to try
and see if we can plant some of them in
the pots that we’ve just
prepared so if there are any experienced
gardeners here then uh here’s an
overview of the groups if you have any
feedback then uh always welcome again
this is just the first test for our
vegetable garden we did do some research
with the groups and everything but
obviously it’s far far far from perfect
so we’re going to learn a lot and again
feedback is always appreciated so we’re
going to try to start out in this
formation and when they grow up we’re
going to transfer them to I think about
this area so we’re going to clear this
out and then uh hopefully be able to
transplant them to here
[Music]
still okay brokoli
hey hey blun
yeah now we’ve got that side project
done that is the garden for now
definitely revisit that in upcoming
months
next phase is quite a big one
actually and it all revolves around this
little bit here so we’ve got three main
things to do the first thing is heating
primarily for next winter we need to
check if that’s airtight so my dad is
making a little Contraption in which we
can find out if the system is airtight
or not and then we can try to clean it
etc etc second off so we got this room
right here this is going to be the
bathroom and this is going to be
our bedroom so we’re going to focus on
these two rooms so we have a cozy
bedroom here and a functioning bathroom
so we can take a hot shower in that and
that’ll be good and from there on out
we’re going to do the rest but then at
least we have a little bit of a
headquarters to work from third of is in
parallel is electricity
we’ve had some contact with the
nutrition and um what we what you saw us
do is drill through all these walls
right so to supply this bathroom for
example with water and electricity so we
got these pipes running through the wall
which is water and electricity and then
from there we would go up and then along
the edge we go to there straight into
the other room and then go basically we
go around this hallway it’s basically on
the other side of the edge so it runs
all the way on the outside of this
hallway but in order to do that we need
to drill a hole which is going to be
right there so we go through that wall
there through that wall there Etc we’ve
made based off of that conversation
actually um I’ve made a little schematic
for you guys so you can sort of try to
follow along uh I’ll show you the
schematic
helps you probably understand what’s
going
on so this is the schedule that I made
based off the conversation that I have
with the electrician it’s a bit rough
and I will run it by him but if you see
any things that uh are wrong then please
do correct me or tips and hints are
always welcome
obviously but to explain so we got the
mains in and then our standard
electrical meter we’ve got 6 Kow and
maybe we’ll upgrade it to 10 in the
future we’ll see we got our 32m fuses in
that fuse box right there because from
here on out we go to all the levels so
you got a second first ground uh floor
in the basement which has the 10 mm
squar or 8 gauge wire uh hopefully it’s
a bit uh future proof as well so in the
tower we uh have this Riser with these
are uh these cables on that in that
riser and they got this fuse box with
standard 16 amp fuses and from here and
out you go to all the separate rooms so
for example this one this is is one big
room and the other cable goes to another
room and this one goes to another room
so it goes round in
that um in that in the hallway that I
just explained so that is sort of in
short what this system is if you see
anything that could help us out any tips
and tricks then uh to please share

  1. If you want to make your soil go further when adding coir to your potting mix also add vermiculite or perlite as this will aerate the soil, keep it moist and allow roots to better take hold. Coming along guys, keep up the good work.

  2. Hi Sam,
It's Debbie from Australia, hope you are all going well.
I'm wondering is there a reason as to why you don't drive your vechile up the back to make it easier on you all, when unpacking?
Would it be possible for you to clear the driveway, so it helps for future unpacking?

  3. Vielen Dank für eure Mühe, uns Teilhaben zu lassen. Das Renovieren der Villa schließt den Rest des Grundstücks ein, bitte lass es in diesem Format.
Thank you for youre effort to share with us. The renovation of the Villa includes the sourounding Ground, please stay in this format. (please excuse my bad english)

  4. I wouldn't mind seeing garden videos dispersed amongst this channel. Either way, you'll be making the same amount of videos, so I personally don't really mind them all being in the same place. I am very excited to see how your living spaces come along. Thanks for taking the time to edit and upload these videos. I appreciate the effort you all make and these are really fascinating to watch. Definitely still my favorite series of videos on YouTube.

  5. Definitely keep the entirety of your adventure together. Also I still have no answer to why I cannot see videos 27-41 – does anyone know?

  6. Awesome!! I love the progress you two are making. And it is an extra bonus to see what you do in the garden. Garden on!!! 🙂

  7. Keep evetything all together. You have an audience who loves you and are loyal. Split your time between the two. Love the raised containers. So much easier on the back. By the way, who us the women in the videos? Wife, partner, friend? What's her name? You mayhave said this before but I'm not remembering.

  8. I think that your gardening will be a huge part of transforming the villa, so it should work as it is. I love both parts and it's going to be great watching the progress.👍

  9. I noticed the huge painting you brought, I think that it's going to look stunning, love the size and the subject. I have collected quite a few oil paintings of sailing vessels over the years.❤

  10. Great idea having separate systems on each floor, it makes future problems and work not effect the whole house. I even fitted three separate earth leakages so that a fault doesn't take out everything, and I never put the lights on one system either, nothing worse than trying to find a problem in the dark lol.👍

  11. I like the gardening as much as the renovation. I hope you will be able to get a rotor tiller! Frost expected tonight in East Tennessee. I had to cover my climbing rose with sheets. It is already starting to bloom!

  12. Just the one channel please. Gardening is part of the Villa’s renovation and is just as important as the building itself. It allows the viewer to watch your videos in a more natural flow. Rob, Cardiff, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  13. i love growing life, especially food! Container gardening on south facing apartment balconies – there's just nothing like eating food you grow yourself!

  14. I put a 1 inch layer of small crushed stones in the bottom of planters, with a drain hole in the bottom of the planter, which allows humidity to escape to prevent root rot, and strangely enough, the roots that grow down from your plants simply stop once they reach the rocks! If the planters are outside, they could fill up with rain, root-rotting all your hard work, so the drain hole is really important!!

  15. Noooo….keep all content on one channel please! Don’t complicate. We are here for you no matter the type of content. You are the star Sam! 😘

  16. When I was young, my family used to travel around the US a lot by car. We would be gone for several weeks at a time, but we weren’t rich enough to stay in hotels the whole time, we always brought a tent with us. One year when I was nine, we took five weeks and drove out to Yellowstone national park, taking our time and camping along the way. My father got very good at packing and unpacking the Plymouth Fury III convertible that we were riding in. Watching you load the furniture in the back of your van reminded me of him. You are quite adept at packing too, lol. 😊

  17. Garden advice: read all of the seed packets for planting instructions. Some things are direct sow and won't transplant well. Even if you do everything right, sometimes there are failures. Just keep at gardening

  18. Hey, alles ist interessant. Renovierung des Hauses, des Garten, Farbenwahl, an den Wänden, Finale Reinigung jedes Raumes, Dekoration.
    Danke aus Deutschland

  19. For your electricity I would also add the option to be able to run some circuits off a generator if you have a blackout and the solar / batteries are not on line. Run it to the fridge / freezer and perhaps a couple of lighting and a power circuit in the area with the fridge / Freezer to allow you some form of living if there is a blackout.

  20. I would add more amps if you can to the system, 32 is not a lot, 42 min and 63 would be much better. All the best with the renovation, you are doing the right thing!!

  21. Hello Sam, I will enjoy both types of content, preferably on one channel. Re another matter: I believe you may have a mistake in your electrical chart. I believe your gauge to mm conversions are not correct. 8 AWG should be 8,35 mm2; 12 AWG should be 3,31 mm2. However, I am not an expert, and I am not sure if it makes any real difference in your case, so just wanted to mention it in case…
