Vegetable Gardening

Think I over did it?

Okay so I have a 200 square feet garden i want to do a row cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, lettuce, carrots, onions, and radishes, and 2 rows of tomatoes.

The watermelon, cantaloupe, crenshaw, eggplant, zucchini, and hot pepper, and corn won't be in the garden.

everything else I won't be doing rows of do you think I have room?

There should be spacing info on the back of those seed packets. Also check out companion planting, because some of those plants have drastically different soil needs. But there’s always containers if you run out of space.

Granted I don’t know your growing zone and conditions. It might be too late to start peppers from seed, as they take longer than other plants to mature. It might also be too late to plant carrots and radish, depending on your zone, as they might want to flower due to the heat.

Same with potatoes, though I can technically grow them all year, it’s better not to through the hottest part of summer

Well if you don’t use all the seeds that are in each envelope many of them could fit into your space.
Most seeds will be good for years to come. I just sowed five year old tomato seeds. Some oft them didn’t sprout but most of them did!

Zucchinis get quite large. One plant can produce enough for 1-2 people. So I wouldn’t plant more than 1 or 2 of them.
Since peas are climbers and you can grow them vertically, they save much space for other plants. Same goes for cucumbers.

If you grow the watermelons on top of the soil they require much space. But there are varieties that you can also grow vertically.
Potato’s also require much space. I grow mine in huge buckets. That way they produce smaller potatoes but don’t take up the whole garden bed.

Radishes (also carrots, beets) can be planted in succession. So you could plant them in three rows (with 10 day difference for each row). That way you can harvest and sow them all throughout the season.

I plant my tomatoes in buckets as well. That way they don’t require much space, I can move them into shelter when it’s raining or put them on my terrace if my vegetable garden gets to crowded

Oh just wait until you realize you can find seed shopping online.

Also, I second the it might be too late for peppers, but if you check Facebook, locals might be selling cheap plants.

We all overdo it on seed packets. But hey, there are worse decisions in life to make!
