Homesteading

Help getting started!

I have recently moved onto a piece of property where I have access to some land to plant a garden. I haven't gardened in years, and my previous experience is balcony/raised bed only. Never a space this big.

I have lots of compost to add to the dirt (it is mostly clay I think, but right in the middle of Zone 3 in Alberta).

Wondering if folks can point me in the right direction to start planning out a space? Should I start just by turning over the soil and adding some compost/water? Do I removed the stuff on top or turn it in? Should I rent a rototiller and get it churned up that way?

Also wondering how folks would start planting/what to plant in year 1 – I know I don't need to do it all in year 1, but I want to start small and not do a bunch of work that won't be beneficial down the line. Do I just do some basic rows? I don't know! So much to learn! Overwhelmed! Thank you in advance – I am so excited to start this space!

Zone 3 and clay? I wouldn’t think so, get your soil tested.

    My priorities would be

    1. Clear land and start building compost (if you live on the land, that could take from 3-6 months of weekly turnings)
    2. Source fruit trees (2yr olds preferred, but if cost is a concern then 1yr old will be ok)
    3. Borrow a drone from a friend, take pictures of the entire plot, design your layout and optionally post here

I’m in zone 3 with clay as well, in saskatchewan. I’m growing a lot of fruit trees, if you’re interested in fruit, a great book called Growing fruit in northern climates by a couple of professors from the university of saskatchewan is available. It has been a lot of help for me.
I am still learning how best to work with the soil as its a bit challenging. Good luck!
