in days gone by an impeccable Immaculate
front lawn was the gold standard in
Street
appeal these days not so much to have a
good-looking lawn you need to give it
the maintenance it deserves and what
makes that even more difficult is
gardening on a slope o what you see as a
Dusty weedy site well I see that as a
site full of potential
[Music]
well I’m not sure you’d call this a lawn
but there certainly is a fair bit of
weed Grace going on here so the first
thing I need to do is strip this back to
give me a blank canvas oh Isaac nice
throw feel so good right
now if I to Cal
down ride
so when it comes to utilizing a sloping
block like this traditionally the
easiest way to do it is with a treated
pine sleeper retaining wall but I want
to do something that looks so much
better than that I’m going to use large
Sandstone Boulders and the sheer weight
of them it’s going to hold the soil back
but it’s going to give us a lovely
natural look
[Music]
flip that round so there and that’ll
make that the front that’s the base yeah
this one slopes up to fit in to
[Music]
it when you’re placing big rocks like
this it’s it you definitely need a crane
to help you out it does make it look a
little bit lighter than it is so when
it’s down that’s it it’s not going to
move you want to get it right first time
so stand back take a good look at it and
then commit
[Music]
yep when you’re building a traditional
retaining wall you want to put some
drainage behind it that way get get the
water out of the way and it doesn’t fall
over but when you’re using big boulders
like this it’s not that necessary we’ve
got big gaps for water to escape we’re
on a slope and the soil is basically
pure sand so I’m just going for a
straight back fill and when you’re doing
so you want to cover quite a lot of the
rock that way it’s going to add
stability but more importantly make it
look really
[Music]
natural the last of of our rocks in and
the nicely back fied this Garden is
starting to take shape and it’s much
cheaper than you might think all of
these Boulders supplied and craned in
for 700 bucks but now the good part
we’re going to soften it all with lots
of
planting I never let go
[Music]
I’m placing my big trees first and
that’s because we’ve got quite a tricky
site as far as aspect goes for 3 months
of the year we pretty much have shade
and for the rest of the year we’ve got
full sun particularly hot Westerly Sun
from this side so I’m dotting trees
through the garden to allow me to have
Shady corridors for more tender plants
like ferns now up here I’ve got bazia
citriodora amazing lemon scented foliage
and then bucking hamia which has a great
flower which is going to attract birds
know a dream is G
like a
[Music]
shadow for our midsize plants I’m using
a combination of Natives and Exotics for
the exotic plants we’ve got RF epis
indicia that is a bulletproof plant and
I planted it along the side of the house
just to soften the brick work for our
natives I’ve got dorany excelsa now this
has got great sword-like leaves and gets
quite big so it’s going to be super
dramatic they’re nestled in front of
some of the Rocks I’m using the silver
lady fern this is just going to get
extra protection from those rocks in the
Westerly Sun but make this Garden feel
like it’s been here for
[Music]
years to really Nestle our rocks into
the landscape I’m using some ground
covers to spill over the edge and just
hug up to them so they don’t feel like
they’ve been placed here I’ve got a
couple of natives we’ve got native
violets now these flowers are actually
edible and I’m going to place those
around the bottom and then at the top
this here it gets a lovely yellow flower
it’s going to sprawl all the way down
the slope it’s going to look really
nice dropped all my
aner dropped all my
fear then I laid you
[Music]
down mulching this Garden is really
important firstly cuz it’s going to
finish the whole thing off and make it
look nice but secondly it’s going to
slow the water into the ground which is
really important on a sloping side
[Music]
down before we started any work here I
was hopping on about the importance of
Street appeal and I think this Garden
goes to prove my point exactly what was
once a sadl looking lawn is now a lovely
Terrace Garden complete with feature
Boulders and complimentary native
planting scheme so if your front lawn
isn’t working for you well why not try
something
different I’m living as a miror
I’m only loved when I need
you and just because I dance to your
doesn’t mean I find them sincere

  1. Great transformation! 🤩 The boulders really give heft and definition to the space. It looks like an established garden that looks good without a lot of care required.
Housekeeping note: the music is a little jarring (although the instrumental was nice) – it doesn’t seem to flow with the video.
Fantastic design as always – well done!!!

  2. It's just green plants. Couldn't you find anything with coloured foliage?
Boring Green all over. No thanks.
