Native Plant Gardening

This year’s Plant Giveaway was a success!

Every year I give away plants on the street (mostly natives from vegetative growth of established plants, but also herbs) and this year it went great! I don't even have a picture of my complete spread – I didn't have time to snap a photo until half of the plants were already gone!! I didn't even have time to label anything (😭). I was setting up at 10am and by 10:15 I had "customers" and it only took 3 hours to give out more than half of everything. By 4pm it was all gone. The bigger display and earlier Nextdoor announcement brought a bigger crowd immediately.

If you can, I HIGHLY recommend holding a giveaway. Everyone was so excited and lovely to talk to and I could recommend uses for each plant. They were so thankful for the generosity (I even got a little bit of tip money lol). Very heartening, lots of folks liked that they were native species and all easy to care for.

My goal for next time is to add more species (I want root a bunch of woody plant cuttings) and maybe add a fall giveaway. I also need to get more genetic diversity in my source populations as I am giving away a lot of identical clones.

What a great thing to do! You said you didn’t have time for labels, so what did you do? Did you just keep repeating the names and pointing? 👉🌻

  2. I think about doing something like this all the time. How do you get people to show up? I’m a little far back in a neighborhood so I can’t totally rely on walk-ups, unless maybe I advertise it like a garage sale.
