Blackberries are one of the Arkansas University thornless types, don’t remember which. Planted two canes behind my garage I guess four years ago now, they’ve fruited and spread over time but up until now it’s just been enough for a few ripe berries as a little garden snack. This is the first season that they are producing a ton, like enough to be worth picking and maybe making a pie. They are quite miraculous. They aren’t on irrigation and I haven’t fertilized them since the initial planting. We haven’t been having any significant rain yet somehow they are abundantly producing these juicy berries. I don’t really have experience with perennials yet so not sure if I am just having a bumper crop this year or if the plants are old enough that they’re really hitting their stride and to expect this again in years to come.

Tomatoes are Cherry Brandywine. They are an early determinate variety. I’ve gotten one or two ripe tomatoes off of some other cherry plants but the Cherry Brandywine’s are ripening quickly and earlier than the others. They’re not the very best tasting cherry but they are good and a welcome addition now when nothing else is ready yet. Really good in pico de gallo. And since they are small determinates they won’t hang around for too long.

    Happy gardening everyone!

Being in Pennsylvania and not even able to put tomatoes in yet makes me jealous. Looks great though.

I have a question! Did you dig up or remove any “suckers”/new baby plants?

Those look like first rate blackberries. I usually go out and forage for blackberries, but didn’t get around to it this season. Surfside Beach and Quintana have some pretty good berry picking patches, but, unfortunately, plenty of rattlesnakes around as well. I think thornless blackberries behind the garage sounds much more attractive.

I’m not familiar with that cherry tomato. There are so many tomatoes with the name “brandywine” in there somewhere, make me wonder how many are connected to Brandywine in any way other way than a marketing ploy? I’m getting a few cherry/small fruited tomatoes now. Going to use some for a salad today or tomorrow. I should get more excited about cherry tomatoes as they tend to be so much easier to grow.
