Composting

First time composting, any tips?

Hello Community,

I have mixed kitchen waste like peels of vegetables and fruits. Have made sure it’s wet but not like too wet, I added a lil water today, hence it’s giving sopping wet today in this photo. Added a bit of cardboard today as well after lurking here. Have kept in under shade but not covered, and have been mixing every second day.

I think my brown to green ratio is off for right now though. I am going to add a bit more paper and dry leaves tomorrow.

This is like a 6 day old pile.

Any tips to get it compost nicely would be helpful 🙂

To properly learn the ropes in composting, it is best to start small rather than immediately ‘dive in at the deep end’, so to speak… Coz by doing so, the beginner will be missing out on manageability, since bigger composts are more difficult to manage and control then ‘experimental-size’ ones…

By starting small. one will be able to learn and experience all the pitfalls and subtle nuances before embarking on more ambitious endeavours… a good way to start is presented thus: …

*It’s done in a small plastic box, and mixing is done with a pair of wooden chopsticks.

Get a plastic barrel/bin. Preferably large one. Then have the electrician or plumber drill some holes in it. Start dumping your kitchen waste in it. It will act as greens. Also autumn has just passed here in India, so you can still find some dry leaves around. Add them too as browns. It will start to heat up. Your method will work too, I just gave you a faster process.
