Weeping Cherry Tree help

For the past 2-3 years I’ve had this vertical growth at the top of my cherry tree (it’s not weeping, but goes straight up) and I’m concerned it’s taking away energy from the older growth (weeping part of the tree). The leaves of the weeping part are starting to have less leaves and smaller leaves. Is this vertical growth something I need to trim and cut off? Or is this normal for a weeping cherry tree? I’ve been at this place for 7 years now… not sure how old the tree was when I moved in. I’d say it’s probably around 10ish years old. Help would be appreciated!! Thank you.
