[Music]
good morning welcome to Yellow door
Urban Homestead I am Asia and I’m an
Urban Gardener growing in a small space
out of my
[Music]
backyard and this morning we are about
to cook some breakfast first of
all that was the float test I didn’t
realized that my Quail outside were
laying and so when I had to get the
chicken if you follow me over on
Instagram I had to get one of my
chickens from behind the ceop and since
I was moving the co I figured I would
clean the co there were all kinds of
eggs back there and if you also follow
me on Instagram you know that I called
all of the quail that were inside
because they were only supposed to be
for winter anyway um anyway the reason
why some of them floated it’s cuz they
were no good they were no good because I
don’t know how long they’ve been
outside and you can do that same test
with chicken eggs um but I just did it
with Quail is cuz that’s what I plan to
eat this morning so I’m going to clean
these up really quick get them on the
stove get some bacon on the stove and
then we are finally starting tomato
seeds so I am in Virginia Zone 7B if you
are new here Virginia Zone 7B and I
could have started my tomatoes quite a
while ago I am choosing to plant in May
and so I’m choosing not to start my
seeds until we are the weeks away from
May when I plan to
plant okay so while we wait for
breakfast we are going to get into do
some seeding uh the bacon is going in
the background and I am hungry so I hope
it does not bother you all any who um I
have gone ahead and wrote out all of my
tags I need to get a glove cuz I’m
trying not to get dirt into that finger
I broke that nail I broke yesterday but
I wrote out everything I am essentially
planting each seed a bunch of them in
one sale so uh this year because I’m
starting so late I don’t feel the need
to plant them in the fruit containers
and then separate them uh so quickly
because I have time this year and I’m
not planning a whole bunch of stuff at
uh one time like I did last year and
very early so happy about that the other
thing that we need to do is there’s
water in this but these are the ceilings
we We Didn’t Start these together that
was the weekend we had a lot going on
and we did not start these together but
these are my peppers I have peppers I
have eggplants I have Shasta daisies did
not come up so we’re going to Reed those
um we have
moranga right here so excited about that
we have three meras and we have a whole
bunch of Ros and I want a whole bunch of
Ros and then we need to separate all of
this basil cuz I want basil all over my
garden this year so we’re going to
separate all of those things today too
while also starting our tomatoes and a
bunch of herbs because like I said I’m
going to turn the flower bed into a herb
bed
um and then we have a few different
flowers that we’re going to plant too so
like I said I’ve already uh put the soil
in here so it’s just a Miracle Grow
Organics as always that’s what I always
start my season at this point if I find
seed starting soil at like a decent
price I’ll buy it but I don’t go looking
for it because seeds will start in
regular potting soil if it has a big
piece I just pull it out I have my book
that we used earlier this year I showed
you of course I will link it in case you
are new here and you did not see that um
I have my book which is going to tell me
what I’m supposed to start I’m only
starting like two varieties and
multiples except for paste tomatoes
paste tomatoes I’m doing four of each
variety breakfast is ready I’m going to
eat this we’re going to get back to work
okay so breakfast was
delicious I got a glove to cover my
finger but I cut a hole because I need
my
nail so here we go basically went ahead
put my tags in I do find that it’s
easier if I write my tags out first
before I um actually start planting CU
you know your hands will get dirty and
stuff so this is a ace
55 and these are basically Amish paste
mixed with uh other Tomatoes but we’re
just going to go ahead and drop a couple
down in there and so for my Amish paste
tomatoes I would like four and these
seeds are kind of old so I’m actually
going to drop them all down in there my
mother Gardens and so if I have extras I
can give them to her so no biggie and I
just take my nail to get all the seeds
that’s why I need my nail and that’s how
I pick out this how many seeds I want to
but anyway for the purpose of this we’re
just going to drop them down in the hole
just like that and and then cover them
up and that’s literally all I’m going to
do to plant these tomato seeds out um
and so those were all of my a55 I have
to get some more of those a55 is a
determinant tomato uh determinant means
it’s only going to grow to a certain
height um if you have a indeterminant
tomato it’ll just keep growing
essentially like it won’t stop as long
as it has space oh goodness I dropped
that down into this haage that’s where
you’re going to need steak and things
and so I want four of these so I’m going
to put in six seeds in case something
does not germinate I’ll still get the
amount of plants that I need have you
planted your Tomatoes yet mine would
have been the size to go in the garden
already if I hadn’t changed my method
this year because I was starting them
way too early I’m going to do the same
thing with the San Marzano I’m going to
do six I want to make a whole whole
bunch of salsa and uh sauce this year to
preserve so Cherokee purple let me go to
my book Cherokee purple I wanted three
of those so I’m going to plant five so
basically I’m planting two extra seeds
over the amount that I want and when
these come up I’ll separate them and put
them into their own sales so I’m
planting two more than what I need and I
did put these in order off camera so
that I could quickly move through this
Heritage rainbow I only need one of
these so I’m going to plant three seeds
and if these come up I will definitely
give them away rad oromic I’m going to
plant I only need one but I’m starting
some for a friend’s mother who really
really enjoyed them so I think I did
like eight of those cuz his mother
really likes them and just like that we
are PL Ed we have six different
varieties of tomato seeds planted and
ready to sprout and remember I told you
one of the easiest ways I came up with
to get started this year is putting
everything that need to be started at a
certain week in the same bag so all I
had to do this morning was jump up grab
this bag out of a larger bag and I was
ready to start seed so maybe give that
an a chance we trying these Isis candies
again this year so everybody kept saying
they were delicious so we going to give
them a chance again this year cuz I
really want to taste them the way
everybody was saying how delicious they
were Paul
robon which died so fast on me last year
but we still trying them again Dr wies
Black Beauty which these black beauties
I’m just sure they should be prettier
like they were so pretty on this package
but that is not what I got out of my
backyard so I got to give it a try
another try I have to and maybe I didn’t
let it ripen long enough I’m not sure
hillybilly very big Chunky Tomato the
hilly I always say hilly bellly it’s
hillbilly sorry I say that all the time
somebody asked one time I’ve never heard
of hilly bellly that’s cuz it’s Hill
bellly and the pink beef steak by the
way I’m on vacation this week I’m so
excited y’all I’m on vacation this week
so y’all probably get way more videos
than normal um I’ve been slacking anyway
so with that being said it’ll be the
makeup for all the videos I I missed off
to the heel belly we go this is from kid
Seed Co over on Instagram I always talk
about them but like look at all these
seeds you got in that one packet I hope
y’all can see I think you can um and
these are older too I probably got them
last year maybe even the year before
last and that I still have have all
these seeds left I decided this year
that I’m not planting a bunch of one
slicer variety I’m doing more paste
tomatoes which pretty sure I told y’all
that before so most of these uh slicers
I only need one of them and I planned it
out that way and also now that we got
the greenhouse done and there’s like
lots of extra space I could use some of
these too you can have a plain but your
plan can absolutely change which you
know I did not plan out the greenhouse
cuz I had I didn’t have the garden bed
up yet so now I can add some extra and
then I might have planted that one too
deep we’ll see Dr wies remember that if
I come back and say they didn’t come up
it’s cu the hole was too small the hole
was too big not too small so vacation
vacation vacation vacation so love that
I I love that for me I definitely was in
need of a vacation and my daughter is on
screen break so you know we’re probably
going to end up at our spot we love so
much Williamsburg
Virginia oh
tomatillos I have not successfully grown
tomatillos but we’re going to give it a
try we’re going to keep giving it a
[Music]
try
[Music]
and then the
tomatillos I’m going to put quite a few
seeds in here cuz you have to have at
least two plants for tomatillos they
have to be pollinated by another plant I
put like six seeds in there so we’ll see
what
happens and I’m just putting them all
into these tin pans then I’m going to
cover this with Saran Wrap to hold the
moisture in and then the heat from my
lights will have these germinate and
then we will move them to their own
trays or into their own
[Music]
pots so as I was planting I realized my
gum frina needs to be
soaked uh and then my Tha blue butterfly
needs to be scarified meaning you just
need to do something to break the
outside of the seed um in the then also
needs to be soaked so I’m going to make
a note of that I did not do that this
year and I don’t have any sun gold seeds
so I need to buy some sungold seeds
wrong
[Music]
page uh notes buy Sun gos uh soak uh
gumina gumina needs to soak for 24 to 48
hours so we’ll do that this evening and
scarify and soap thae blue butterfl
so I’ll do those both at the same time
and then we’ll plant them tomorrow or
two days from now so made a note of that
and I’m going to leave my tags cuz when
it’s time to plant I’ll just set them
right in there where they belong and now
next we’re on to a lot of
these a lot of these herbs that I know
nothing
about nothing about but they are good
medicinally A lot of them and that’s why
I’m planting them
I have fennel in here too which is more
of a cooking herb as I understand it if
it’s used medically I’ll be looking into
that too but I have loveage fennel fever
Feud valaran root true hsip wormwood
which is Sweet Annie um soap wart St
John’s wart plantain which my plantain
came back from last year in that bag
over by the greenhouse but I’m still
going to plant more lemongrass and
stinging nettle that stinging nettle got
me last year it got me last year I was
over by the over by the greenhouse and I
kept saying what in the world am I
feeling it was the stinging that
y’all it was getting me good too so I
have to plant that somewhere this year
where I’m not going to be like really
brushing against it cuz it was getting
me valarian root seeds are pretty small
we’re just going to drop them close to
the top cuz it’s they’re pretty small
and then just cover them up a little
lighter and I’m going to leave one on
the surface to see what happens cuz I
don’t CU I don’t know what I’m doing
with
these I’m not even I’m not going to lie
to y’all cuz I don’t but if whatever
comes up will be fun and I hope my what
is now my flower bed is so pretty this
year when things start to uh flour cuz
herbs do
flour show in show sew in Shallow pots
or flets indoors under grow light in a
or in a Cold Frame use a good quality
sterile seed starting mix pot up to a
larger container as necessary harden off
one to two weeks transplant gently avoid
damaging the
[Music]
stem
[Music]
okay this is the sweet and oh very small
seeds very very small seeds these
Snapdragon quality here so what I’m
going to do is just sprinkle some across
the top cuz yeah very small oh my
goodness I’mma have a million of
these Lage is next I don’t know how
helpful this video going to be it’s more
like a vlog anyway cuz I ain’t really
telling y’all much except for what I’m
doing it’s more like a vlog a vlog Fel
Fel is like licorice isn’t it doesn’t it
have like a licorice taste I think
they’re really cute I don’t know that
I’m going like the taste of it cuz I
don’t like Licorice and I’m putting more
fever few out my fever F came back from
last year but I want some in the herb
bed because they flow so pretty and I
think in my research said that it’s
actually good for fevers and I saved a
lot of fever F last year but I still
haven’t used it I’m going to try I’m
going to try to figure all of this stuff
out during this season they flower very
nicely and the uh the insects seem to
love them now I need to fill up another
sale for what I have
left ooh perennial we love
that we love a good perennial
[Music]
plant all right we are on going to up
potting all of these
things lots and lots of things now what
did I do with my soil found it I’m very
hopeful that I don’t have to move these
out of these tiny
containers um when it’s time to plant
the good thing is my last frost will
come before May so if something is like
over growing and my last frost has come
I may just put them out I might just do
that I’m very much trying to save myself
from all that up pot I really am so
these are pretty moist already and I
don’t have to move them all so I’m still
going to use these trays that already
have soil in them I’m just going to take
the ones that have more than one out so
like this is a fire orizo or whatever
it’s called I’m not sure but I’m going
to just pop this out make another T A
little bit easier if the soil isn’t
super moist but I hadn’t actually
planned on doing this today but since I
was already going to be planting let me
turn it around so you can see see I’m
just going to pop this out if it wasn’t
so moist that would be great and the
good thing too is the root shouldn’t be
very long yet so I may just be able to
slide it out so see that’s one of my
pepper seeds
seedlings right there and I did get some
of the soil
so I’m just making a hole and I’m going
to drop it in pretty deep because
they’re still young so that should be
just fine for them I do them like this
every year as long as you don’t keep
your soil overly moist you should be
fine uh it shouldn’t rot or anything
then I’m just going to push that one
right back down in there this sale on
this one tray is a little broken but
just like that and now I need to write
another tag for this the five
Oran paprika is what it’s called and now
they’re both separated and I did not
remember to write the tags for these so
we’re going to have to write as we do it
and I’m going to be
dirty now we ready to move on to the
next so this golden Marone only one came
up so I’m going to leave that one right
where it is the Jimmy nardello we got
three of those I don’t remember how many
we actually needed let’s see we only
needed one Jimmy nardello but again I’ll
give it away the chest the daisies did
not come up so it’s possible that I
might receive those in this golden
Marone I’m going to drop that down in
there I don’t wait for my seedlings to
have their true leaves it works without
doing that for me I don’t wait I have no
idea what my daughter is doing I don’t
know if y’all can hear her or not but
it’s a lot of noise going on in the back
of that house well that sounds like my
son son up I thought that was you all
right so just like
that we have up potted and each one has
its own sale now so excited shashito oh
no I wanted three of those they only got
oh I take that back got I got
six we’re going to keep them
I just realized what I did I put it’s
cool it’s cool so with that being said
okay that’s a space for all three of
those shishitos and I’m only going to
write one uh thing out cuz they’ll be
right beside each other and then I need
to pull them out of their current trays
leave the rest where they are and I’m
basically just breaking up the sole cuz
it’s so moist and it’ll they’ll slide
right out see that slide right out and
then the one that’s left I’m going to
leave in that tray there for saving
myself time I’mma slide this one out so
I can plant it deeper cuz a little uh
giving laggy a little bit it’s giving
leggy a little
bit but I can fix
[Music]
it my
habanada there’s one right here but
there’s one right there and it seems to
just be coming up so we’re going to
leave both of those where they are right
now cuz when I say just coming up still
has the seed cap on it good thing I got
that space in the greenhouse now cuz
some of these shashito
going I really don’t want to get rid of
a shashito cuz
listen like my favorite shashito is like
my favorite it’s going to be the basil
that’s about to take me out look at all
these basil y’all that’s what’s going to
take me out I don’t need a whole bunch
of eggplant and my eggplant didn’t come
up I’mma replan for that and then I’m
just going to use these if a eggplant
comes up beside it cool I can re you
know I can fix that but I’m going to
replant in this some of these uh rosale
and I’m just L lightly pulling them
apart not going to plant them that deep
either cuz I’m not going way up the stem
of a Ros I don’t think that’s a good
idea and I probably should plant these
in something bigger but we’re going to
see what happens very much feeling like
spring to me my motivation was low for a
while but now it’s coming back and I’m
excited I’m very very excited if I had
my motivation all of this stuff would
have already been moved but my
motivation was low it would have been
moved at a much smaller stage I’m not
going to move the meringa cuz there’s
one to each tray right now so don’t need
to move that the other thing I’m
planning to do is to start putting these
ceilings outside in the greenhouse
instead of having them inside all the
time I’m very much just trying to see I
am not a gardener who
wants who wants to Baby any plant I was
doing it because I was learning now I’m
about to start trying other things new
things Basils oh it smells so good but
I’m going to go ahead and finish this up
like I said my camera’s getting hot so I
hope you enjoyed this video if you did

  1. I planted the same black beauty tomato seeds last year, and you’re right, they didn’t turn out completely black as in the photo…except for a few that I kept on the vine forever.

  2. Asia, you are so funny and easy going. That glove, finger, cut off for the nail, made me smile, very useful nail btw. Thanks for sharing, enjoyed the content.

  3. Congrats on your vacation!! I know your excited. I grew some fennel and it smells great. When I cooked it I sautéed with butter and added to a stir fry and it was delicious! I found some videos on cooking it and gave it my own twist!

  4. Nice video! Love Amish Paste, tomatoes! Use a pencil as a dibber to make a hole in the soil! Save your nails for the glamour!

Love that your subscriber base is increasing! Good job! Nice content! TFS!

  5. I started my tomatoes last Thursday. And they came up in three days. I started later because I'm in a different area this year and plus I'm garden differently. I have a yard this year, previous years I was doing apartment gardening. This year I'm at my mother in laws house and I have a whole back yard to experiment in. My garden beds that I ordered Monday came in today and I'm too excited. I'm seeing a lot of the things I planted starting to pop. i should probably start thinking of separating some of my veggies but I may wait a little longer. Love this!!!

  6. Your content is a teaching tutorial. It shows it doesn’t have to be by the book. Effort is more than half the battle. You’re doing a great job keep up the great work. My wife and I truly enjoy watching your videos.

  7. I just found your channel and GURL….you got a LOT goin on!! I LOVE IT! How can you plant all that stuff and keep up with it? I would feel like I was at work lol…. But again – I LOVE IT. Gotta tap that subscribe button cause I wanna know MORE! Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Much Love To Ya!🙋🏽‍♀️💗

  8. Been a while since I've commented, just been watching but I wanted to thank you for all you share 💕. I've purchased started for the past 2weeks, just didn't feel up to seeding, keeping them alive than having to up pot but I will be this weekend, this video inspired me. My backyard is chaotic but I'm planning to fix most of that today. Thanks for all you do to inspire 💕

  9. Hey girl been watching farming videos and kept searching for some melanin i knew it was some out there! Great job!

  10. I know you don't like cats, but me & my cat, suki love watching your videos. She'll literally sat & watch your videos with me. Doesn't matter if I'm watching on my phone, tablet or TV. Once she hears your voice, she'll come running lol

  11. Hi Asia! Lovimg your channel ❤ I started my tomatoes about 1 week ago. 10 varieties/ 2 each in peat moss pots and small starter pots same size as peat moss pots. Today I harvested almost all that I planted last fall. Cleaned 2 flower beds, found a couple of bean stalks that grew over winter, put up trellis, netting and called it a day. Gardening/ farming is NOT for the weak. I love it!

  12. Hi Asia, Isn"t it always exciting to plant new varieties of plants.I have some of the same seeds your starting too! Do you have any luck with beets at all, they seem to always die off after 2 leaves sprout. Happy Spring😊

  13. I wanted to thank you for showing how you do your gardening. By watching other people, gardening was becoming harder than what I could do. I also work full time out of the house and in the evening here in the Georgia we have a lot of gnats so I don't like being outside sometimes. When I saw you plating seeds inside your house, somehow you gave me permission to do the same. I put some paper down, brought a bag of dirt inside and with one of my boys we planted seeds in our living room. I used your method of planting multiple seeds in a container with Organic performance soil and covered it with plastic wrap. I didn't have grow lights but I saw that you had regular lamps, so I used 2 desk lamps and a standing lamp with LED bulbs next to a table where I have my microwave. I obviously cleaned everything very well. I started Friday night and finished planting 24 types of seeds by Saturday morning. By Monday evening, some of the seeds had already sprouted. Amazing!!!! In the past I would use the seedling trays and would put them in a greenhouse outside and would forget about them and would barely get anything to sprout. I would go out and check once a week. With this method, I connected the three lamps to an electric strip so in the morning with one button I turn the three lamps on. I can see the water droplets inside the plastic wrap. Once they are a bit bigger I with transplant them. Thank you for your guidance!

  14. How fun seeing how you garden! I do a full playlist on the herbs. Feverfew is one of my staples for headaches. i have migraines so I love it when it is fresh I go out and chew on a flower and get great relief. I think i may need to have a pot inside.
