Composting

Any tips? First time composting

I am composting in city limits on my porch. Does this look alright for starting or do i need to add more of something?

Are you using the cardboard box as a container for the compost? It will break down too…

Honestly, I say this with all the love for composting in my heart, you’d be best to just not if you just have a porch and no green space.

This is going to break down the box, leak all over your porch, you’re going to get so little out of it anyway it’s not going to be good ROI.

I’d just put this in the city green waste programme you’re in and buy soil, assuming its for potted plants.

This looks so adorable – I’m saving this to my compost reel! Your intentions are so well placed. Excited for you to get the proper compost container, please do update us!! Because yes the cardboard will breakdown before you know it so don’t dillydally.

As for browns to greens ratios, think of it like this – for every handful of greens, you want 2-3 handfuls of browns.

From the picture, it seems very balanced and at the proper moisture level.
    Ways to check:
    – does it smell okay? At this stage it will still have a tolerable food smell but if it smells rancid, there’s an issue
    – when you mix it up and squeeze a handful, does water drip out? Too wet, add more browns. It should always be at the level of a rung out sponge
    – visually, do you see more browns than greens? That’s what we aim for

KEEP COMPOSTING AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOUR NEW BIN!

Pee on it. It might help the compost break down before the box disintegrates… or you might have piss everywhere. Only one way to find out

  6. so i don’t this a box will work……. that will breakdown as well
