In this Virtual Chelsea Flower Show video article garden designer Tom Massey demonstrates how to plant an urban front garden using organically grown perennials and grasses, which would have been used for the @yeovalley Organic Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Tom talks about organic principles and how small changes to the way we garden can make a big difference to wildlife, pollinators and insects. By planting flowering perennials and grasses in urban areas we can create wildlife corridors and food for bees and other insects. Tom demonstrates how naturalistic planting can work beautifully in a small urban garden, even if you don’t have space for a full blown wildflower meadow.

Tom’s planting is inspired by the real @yeovalleyorganicgarden designed and managed by Sarah Mead. Sarah provides a snapshot of Yeo Valley’s organic practice: working organically with nature to mutual benefit, and talks about how organic farming and the principles translate to her ornamental garden, organically certified by the @soilassociation . The Yeo Valley Organic Garden is located in the real Yeo Valley in Somerset, surrounded by organic farmland. Lucky visitors to the garden may get a chance to see Yeo Valley cows walking past on their way to milking. The beautiful garden provides a diverse range of habitats from woodland, to wetland to perennial boarders and wildflower meadows, providing a number of wildlife friendly habitats with a rich and varied tapestry of flowering plants. The garden is an @the_RHS partner garden, and is free for RHS members to visit. It is usually open to the public from May to October and Yeo Valley also host regular farm tours, but please check the Yeo Valley website during the coronavirus lockdown to ensure opening times before travelling.

(A quick note on safety – this video was shot observing social distancing measures, some footage was captured last September before lockdown rules were in force.)
