Tomatoes

What got into my tomatoes, and how do I keep it from happening again?

I'm growing tomatoes for the first time and finally got them into pots yesterday. Went out this morning to admire them and something had a field day in the garden. 4 out of 12 pots had been rummaged in, one plant was thrown on the ground, but no fruit was eaten. The holes range from pretty shallow to about 2-3 inches deep. They're pretty narrow, and go down at an angle.

We live in the country, so we do have critters. Squirrels, raccoons, cats, deer, you name it, we got it. I don't want to harm any of them, but I do want to keep them out of the plants. Also, since we're kind of in the middle of nowhere, diy solutions are a bit easier. I can order whatever I need to, but if it takes time to get here and the garden is already destroyed its not going to matter.

From searching the sub the suggestions I've found range from bird netting to chili's or cinnamon. I am wary of the bird netting though because I don't want to accidentally tangle or harm any of the birds.

What's the solution here?

My plants looked this when squirrels decided to rummage through the dirt. I’ve seen people suggest hardware cloth over the dirt with a hole big enough for the base of the plant to fit through.
