What in snake-nation?!

This snake plant has been a real trooper. Always on the brink of death. I've moved it around, and repotted it a time or two, when I noticed it was sad again today. I pulled it out and this jumbo root and wet soil is what I found. There were also lil tiny gnats. I'm assuming root rot but can it be saved?! Should I put it in water in hopes of more root growth or put it back in dry soil in a comfier pot? It's still growing babies despite its despair.

it looks a little rugged but it can be saved. Gently remove the dead roots, give it a good wash, and stick it in water for a few months. It will be fine

I wouldn’t bother putting it in water, it’s an unnecessary step. Get some fresh soil, preferably a succulent mix, and some extra pumice or perlite, and replant it. Water only every 3-4 weeks, when completely bone dry.
Btw, the stem is a stolon or runner stem — the larger plant on the left is the parent of the one on the right.

1:1 succulent potting soil and pumice or perlite would help here and be sure to only water the soil when dry, but water it completely. A smaller pot would help so the soil can dry faster at an acceptable rate for the plant.

  4. are you sure the one on the right isnt an offshoot from the left one?

I’ve heard before that you can spray roots with hydrogen peroxide to help stop/prevent root rot, so you could maybe try that before repotting with a succulent/cactus mix. I tried this when I last did a big repot of my plants. I diluted the hydrogen peroxide a bit just because I didn’t want to accidentally kill my plants. Nothing seems to have been harmed by it.

Also, wait for the soil to dry between watering. You can use a metal knitting needle to see if the soil is still wet. You just stick it in the pot all the way to the bottom and if it comes out with soil (probably slightly damp soil) on it then the soil is still wet and it doesn’t need watered yet.
