Is this a forsythia pruned into a “tree”?

Is this a forsythia, or something else? Zone 6a, Michigan. I would like to do this to my forsythia if it’s possible! I’m surprised that there aren’t a bunch of new shoots coming up at the base.

Wow. I never thought to do this. It almost looks like a tiny, yellow yew. I wonder if this is sustainable for the tree? I’m really fond of the aesthetic!

It is a Forsythia, and it’d probably take several years of doing, but should be possible. Just beeds time and patience.

If you look at the bottom, there’s a few flowers,so it’s possible they constantly prune off any suckers from the base, in perpetual upkeep.

Wow, that’s pretty cool. Reminds me of something out of a Dr. Seuss book. With a few more funky plants around it, it could look like a Dr. Seuss style garden in the spring haha.

It’s unusual to turn caning shrubs into trees like this, but it looks quite nice. By unusual, I mean they aren’t ideal for it, but people definitely do. If you want to maintain this, you’ll just need to keep pruning any new canes that pop up off the root ball which it should do every year. Also, I’m not 100% familiar with Forsythia so you might want to look this up, but typically as canes age they become less vigorous, so that may require to you train newer canes like this to maintain this long-term. Might be something to look into.

Yaaaas! That takes a good bit of planing and yearly care but they did a great job!

Ooh, I’m trying this. I’m patient, with gardening anyway. Lol. Thanks for sharing. Didn’t know this was a thing.

This is the first time I’m seeing Forsythia as a tree! I’ve always known them as shrubs. Looks exquisitely beautiful!

Are you sure that’s not witch hazel? It has the same bold, golden color, but it grows more treelike than forsythia.

My neighbors forsythia look like this, I think it’s rad. Definitely sustainable for the long term, it’s looked that way for years

This is awesome! I can’t wait to kill a forsythia trying to do this!

I have a decades-old burning bush that’s been pruned into a tree. It’s at least 20 feet tall and wide, and I like it very much.

A Ginko Biloba looks more like Forsythia to me.

I don’t think I could ever accomplish that with mine. It grows out more than up.

I had a client that had them all across the front of their house and I pruned them all up like this and planted under them, it was beautiful. I wish I had a photo to share

I took several cuttings from my Memeres bush and I want to try to standardize them. I have enough that I’ll probably braid some and have single stem “trees” and see what takes.

  16. Looks like a forsythia

It probably requires a lot of maintenance to not have shoots popping out

Love it! We did this with our holy tree. Now looks like a mushroom

  18. When I lived in the US, my childhood home had an overgrown forsythia so I’ve been able to spot them quite easily. I live in Korea now and I was surprised the first time I saw a forsythia in the shape of a tree like this. I recall trying to research it one time but not really finding any answers. Idk if they just grow that way here or if people prune them that way but it’s not uncommon to see forsythia that look like this in Korea

Wow I kind of love this! Forsythia are not my jam but this I could deal with 😂
