Edible Gardening

Living in an ORGANIC EDIBLE GARDEN in Costa Rica | Full Tour in Our Eco Village

We live in an eco village in Costa Rica, and one of the reasons why we decided to live here is for the edible garden and food forest we are surrounded by. As a community, we have shared gardens and 5km of streets lined with fruit trees. Every week, we gather in the morning to collect our fresh organic produce baskets for the week. Not just knowing where your food comes from but watching it grow is magical! Plus, we help support a school in out local community and share how you can help support them as well.

About:
Want to learn how to travel more and better or build your dream life in a tropical paradise? You’ve come to the right place. We’re giving you tips, hacks and advice for solo and family travel, RV life and expat living. The highlights, the struggles, the endless repairs and balancing family life and work life on the road. We also purchased land in an eco-community in Costa Rica where we’re building an Airstream Jungle home. Here, we’ll be living and building the community with hundreds of people from around the globe, who’s stories we’ll also be sharing with you. We’re sharing the highs and lows of living in 200 sqft full-time as a family and the process of moving our lives…and our home on wheels to another country.

it is Harvest day here in the community
so we’re going to head down to the
garden and we get to collect our weekly
Harvest of fruits and vegetables and
leafy greens and tubers like any root
vegetables like sweet potatoes carrots
and hopefully some jack fruit but we’re
a little late so hopefully there’s jackf
fruit left is if there are some cuz
people here love jack fruit it’s not a
joke actually I think I said carrots I
don’t I don’t know if there are carrots
here are there carrots carrots okay
sometimes eggplant okay it only takes us
about 5 minutes to walk to the Garden
from our place and then we’re in this
Lush edible
Paradise it’s like Willy Wonka’s
chocolate factory but everything’s
healthy woo these look
spicy us us one US
Amigos oh right right right how was it
hola hey there hola H how are you do you
mind being on
camera hi hi hi Laur hi are you filming
I am filming I’m filming this experience
to share with the world nice I made an I
made an inspiration today I added a list
of what we’re what you’re getting in
your basket oh wow that’s helpful just
take a little picture of that list and
then you got it yeah and then you’re
good to go thank thank you so today
we’re getting mint
radish sweet pepper lemon drop mango
Steen miracle fruit star fruit kuk Tulsi
basil
cinnamon and then that’s just this table
Three Bananas one cucumber seven red wax

guys one eggplant one green banana one
purple basil Green Basil Buck Choy
coriander green onion arugula then one
purple basil to Green Basil to Green

and next Tuesday we’re going to get a
similar amount of food jack fruit baby
super super ripe gooey juice juicy jack
fruit oh they’re not
as so good right from the tree just over
there so
good we have Janet here she comes with
her delicious goodies her vegan goodies
hello every Tuesday yes what do you have
today uh I have a gluten this is all I

scone with passion fruit Orange um icing
on top
and then a Sourdough black sesame bagel
with vegan cream cheese yeah which is
mine this I pre-ordered yes this one’s
yours thank you a of I think Jack fruits
are an alria
aphrodesiac some
experience don’t eat the where my hands
are just bite there yeah there oh yeah
wow that is
Rip there’s some aligan papaya as well
and the seeds are actually really good
to just
swallow chew up even if you want they’re
a little peppery but they’re good for
like clean up any parasites which we all
have not think you do but you probably
do the papaya here is so good it’s like
sweet super sweet like candy enoy some
of the right I’m going to grab our gidy
papaya this week which is
awesome and we got some different
there’s always different types of
bananas these are I think the blue Java
bananas I think or the apple bananas
still trying to figure it out there’s so
many different ones and we got eggplant
and water apples or wax
jamboo
cucumbers like mustard greens and buff
Choy and kale and
chives everything smells so fresh we got
some this is actually cilantro it’s a
different type but it tastes the same
these are Miracle Berries if you’ve
heard of them you’ve probably heard of
like the tablet form that you can buy in
a store um and you like suck on them and
it changes your taste bud so that sour
things are actually sweet so you can e a
lemon and it tastes like candy this is
the fresh version right off the tree
does the exact same thing our farm team
here has been doing a lot of work
maintaining and scaling up the farm
because alria used to be just like old
destroyed cattle pasture land and that
was part of the vision was we would
restore the land and turn it into a food
forest and it’s really hard it takes a
lot of hours of work and gardening and
tending to the soil and tending to the
plants but I see it changing now and
we’re growing food and neighbors are
being fed more and more every month is
coming out of the garden what’ you get
some jack fruit some sneaky jack fruit
no there’s so much I just want some for
Kai yeah it was starting to go bad it
smells unbelievable H honestly like
don’t bring me flowers don’t bring me
chocolate just bring me jack fruit okay
I’ll remember that that’s the key to my
heart oh no what happened got this like
the craziest superg glue from the jack
fruit it comes from the jack fruit in my
hair I’ve never experienced this so
we’ll have to see how that turns out
okay let’s see what we
got muffin is really good
there’s a lot of wax jamboo
today it smells so amazing
wow just exploding with fresh fragrance
as the community continues to grow and
get older we’re going to have even more
produce cuz our garden is going to get
bigger and our fruit trees are going to
start bearing more fruit they’re scaling
it according to how many people are
living here right there’s no point in
having 10 times the amount of food than
people that can eat it this is
peppercorn it was just picked off the
vine and we’re just going to leave it
out and it dries up and it becomes the
black pepper corn we all know and then
this is actually from the garden as well
and then we just put it in this pepper
grinder look at that fresh
pepper spicy one thing that I’ve been
missing here in this country is yellow
lemons they’re so hard to find you go to
every grocery store they say yeah we
have lemons but it it looks like an
orange it’s just like a sour orange so
our friend here found one in a grocery
store and I kept the seeds here are the
lemon seeds but I don’t really know how
to grow a lemonry I you know I can do
some research but I don’t really know so
I messaged our our farm leader here and
I said hey I have some lemon seeds I
have like 10 lemon seeds if I give you
all 10 lemon seeds can you try and grow
10 lemon trees and I only want one tree
back the other nine can be donated to
the farm and he’s like sure bring them
down we’ll try and grow lemon trees
where does that happen in the world not
Canada yeah not not Canada if you guys
could grow anything around your house
what would you want to grow honestly if
only one of these becomes a lemon tree
I’ll be happy seeds are precious I never
really appreciated seeds until I moved
somewhere where I could plant them
[Music]
okay hello welcome this is alria Village
my name isz I am Farm managing and I am
happy to show you what’s going on show
me show me especially this new area so
this is like a new addition to the
Garden which is really exciting yeah it
is what kind of plants what kind of
trees do we have uhhuh okay this is
pigeon peas here pigeon peas uh I see
water Apple uhuh water Apple
canelle uh bread fruits lots of aratus
here miracal fruits uh pangas awesome
anonas mamea Poes chamb I have yet to
try but it’s on top of my list of fruits
to try super excited about that also
some tours purple
Jam Pion fruit
garcas it’s amazing this has been my
dream like as a child to be able to grow
all these fruits and like it’s here it’s
so exciting uhhuh and yeah also
different cuttings we are doing this is
CH skill this is Ed leaves this is Ed
leaves as well but uh yeah this we call
Rosa hamaica iisus these are guas or
inas they are good as
Neutrogena red okra we need to plant
them soon because they are desperate
looking for light uh this this is
moringa trees wow uh some old Citrus
that need to be planted before um or
during rainy season now some special
avocados grafted avocados that we’ll be
replanting in the ual forest in the AR
forestry system avocado uh this avocado
here uhhuh um yeah or there jack fruit
some Duan some Kazu which are like larer
caca ooh so this is the plant bank is
that we’re calling this where neighbors
can come and plant their own seeds and
then the garden crew will help them grow
and then we can take some plant it on
our own person personal private Lots as
well as in the garden right exactly yeah
it’s definitely an space St as a service
for the community what about the
lemon we did give some the typical
lemons you know the yellow ones I don’t
know what you do with them and I don’t
know I need to ask Oscar because I know
that Oscar planted that for sure so I
just need to check with himing our
fingers we have some lemon juice yeah so
this is the community compost area do
you want to share how it works yeah it’s
a rot rotational is that correct yeah
yeah system so this is the first chamber
this is where every uh people bring
their greens and put them here and we
also have solost so this is like the
carbon dry Source um versus the nitrogen
wet greens that people are bringing and
we make sure to add enough of that we
also inoculate and we we have them here
it’s actually 45 so this is like the
compost the last stage of it before you
use the last stage of imos it’s already
combined with horse manure so it’s full
of life there are like five stages we
start collecting it from the jungle with
rice and then as we go from micro to
macro we have this amount of of soil uh
of imos we call indigenous
microorganisms thank you Oscar gracias
Oscar and and then we are adding sols
and inoculating with the microbes so
this is first chamber after let’s say
two to three weeks it’s full and then we
need to uh move it to the second chamber
and as we go you notice every time there
is more Iration more time of the
material riping more time in the
thermophilic stage with lots of
temperature yeah it’s the color is
changing it’s getting darker and dark
darker as it’s progressing uhhuh so if I
continue digging you will start noticing
all the operation we just need to make
sure it doesn’t yeah it’s hot I mean if
you put your hands there you’re going to
get hot a burn
yeah and then you smells like Earth you
see all these U little whitish uh
networks of myum the composing
everything wow so yeah it it’s crazy
it’s working a lot it’s very colonized
and inoculated imos are everywhere w d
digesting the food and this is the last
stage okay this should be removed is
this is this the same as what’s over in
that big pile over here with the
thermometer or uh no it’s different this
is compost and that is imos imos we are
not using or Organics from people we are
just reproducing microbes from Jungle in
a uh in a process with car Bon source
which are wood chips from thec composed
Trunks from Jungle and rice brand that
is the rest of the process of the rice
that is carbohydrates so we go from from
micro to micro in these stages I was
talking to First with rice later with
brown sugar later we start a pile with
wood chips and rice brand later we add
black soil and we go making it bigger
and in the end we double that amount
with horse manure wow that’s last stage
when the microbes are very alive and
they can digest very easy the manures
and that has lots of nitrogen in life um
so yeah microbes are definitely helping
to regenerate this oil here in alria
[Music]
Village today we are at a local school
that’s close to the community we live in
here in Costa Rica and they need help we
are looking to build a nether classroom
as well as update some of the the facil
ities that are already here yeah so the
kids are helping the families are
helping we’re coming together to really
help this school and while you’re
watching this if you want to reach out
and help by a donation we’re going to
put a link so you guys can can donate
and see their patreon k
w Kai are you going to go paint yeah
okay go paint
[Music]
hey bro morning welcome hey Neo hey bud
where are we where are we at a
construction site this is when Community
thrives more hands just make things
happen a lot faster and lighten the load
on everyone
I’m inside the classroom this is the one
classroom where all of the grades are
together in this one classroom with one
teacher I only see like a couple of
books um yeah two books a couple of toys
and even the cleaning product is in here
because there’s nowhere else for it to
go but there will be because we’re
converting the what was the washroom
into like a storage unit so things like
cleaning supplies can go over there and
eventually there will be another
classroom and hopefully another teacher
but I mean there needs to be more money
to pay for another salary they don’t
have money to pay someone to come and
clean like clean the kitchen and the
toilet and the classroom so there’s a
parent that volunteers to come and do
that there is a preschool room as well
so that this is separate from the other
classroom but just preschool students
are here and then all the other grades
are in that other classroom with the one
teacher the preschool has a little bit
more toys some books I’m seeing but they
could definitely use some more right now
we’re digging a
trench there’s the water that hits the
land and there’s lots of water here in
rainy season um just kind of washes out
their play Space so we’re building a
water channel so that so that the water
can leave and not be stuck here on the
land but it’s a lot of work it’s a lot
of people
power but it’s
rewarding I think it’s so important for
us to be involved in our neighborhood uh
the the schools especially to have the
young people see us help but also to
have the benefits of water control and a
classroom and a roof over their head and
shelter to play so anything we can do to
help that is uh feels
[Music]
good what’s this over here I don’t think
I’ve sweated this much in my entire life
absolutely crazy look at that sweat kite
you can fill a
pool is that a lot of sweat
Kai all of this dark area is sweat this
is what this supposed to look
like
[Music]
yeah support
[Music]
let me know if I need to go up or down
uh that slip
there let’s see how it looks nice yeahoo
made the shelves now they have a space
for stuff like this it’s not in the
classroom perfect imagine if that just
collapsed cooks for the kids every
single day and and she’s the one who
don’t get pay really well or know
sometimes she don’t get PID and but she
still wow
graas the lady that cooks for the kids
here for breakfast and lunch has
volunteered her time to come and cook
for everyone working on the site which
is so nice I think it’s important to
give back to the the places you visit
uh as a traveler but also like us coming
to another country to get involved with
the community we’re living in and seeing
ways we can help and what type of help
is accepted we’ve actually made
volunteering and giving back and working
within the communities we visit as part
of our Hopscotch the globe group trips
we’ve built a playground in Guatemala
which was one of the best experiences
ever we’ve also built a playground in
another part of Costa Rica in Mont Verde
so it’s nice to continue doing what we
can to give back to the communities that
are important to us
[Music]

  1. What a wonderful community! Is Kai going to be going to that school? Ok time for a produce joke. Why did the lemon call an ambulance? Cause he needed lemon-aid!
