HONESTY/ lunaria annua/ moon wort/ silver coin – FLOWERS IN SPRING

Honesty (lunaria annua) is an interesting plant which gets its name because of its silvery, translucent moon – like seed pods which appear once the flower drops. These attractive seed pods remain on the plant through summer, autumn & winter and are very often used in flower arrangements. The appearance of the seed pods have also led to the plant being known as silver coins or silver dollars.

Although this plant is better known for these seedpods it also has attractive fragrant ( and edible) flowers lived by pollinators. These can be purple or white and are commonly seen in hedgerows and gardens in England during the spring.
The plant is also a food source for the (green) caterpillars of the orange tip butterfly.
