Can anyone tell me what this tool is and what it’s for?

One of the many tools I’ve found on my new property. Not entirely sure what it’s for but I figured it’s like a rake or a cultivator? If anyone has any idea or just know what it is exactly it would be very helpful. Thanks

It looks like the sides are different. It looks like a rake for pulling thatch out of grass on the round side and a dirt cultivator on the pointy side.

Dethatching rake, they are quite the workout

Use this for an hour and you’ll know why we invented internal combustion.

Thatch rake. One side for aeration the other side for pulling up dead grass. Pretty neat but exhausting work.

  5. It looks like the rake I use to get dog hair out of my rugs

  6. That’s an abs workout machine! Try raking with it for a while and you’ll see! 😀

People keep saying “thatching rake” without explaining what it is or how it works.

The sharp end is used to break roots and to scratch up the soil. This can help creeping grass varieties to propagate and also increases airflow to the roots.

The blunt end is used to pull out “thatch” which is the yellow/brown stuff under your green lawn. This thatch actually degrades the quality of your lawn and can inhibit growth. It can also prevent creeping varieties from properly sending out runners. It can even retain a lot of moisture which can cause fungal and pest problems which can quickly kill areas of your lawn.

When you de-thatch, the spent grass material will come up in clumps. You should then use a leaf rake to collect it. Don’t leave it on the surface of your lawn like I have seen some people do. It will just re-settle and continue to cause issues. You can compost it or use it as a mulch. You will get A LOT more thatch than you were expecting. If you have never de-thatched, there is a good chance your lawn is over 60% thatch…

How much better are these than a regular bow rake? Was using my metal rake to gather the 17,000 gumballs in my yard and turns out the yard gets a complementary dethatching in the process

    Dethatcher.

It removes the thatch at the bed of your lawn with the curvy side. Thatch is just dead grass that builds into a mat. Sometimes it is useful (as in retaining temps and moisture) and other times it is not (as when over-seeding a lawn and the thatch blocks the seed from growing.)

To use it, just angle the tines slightly perpendicular to the ground and rake as you normally would use a rake. However, instead of lifting up on the detacher like you would with a rake, then repeating a raking motion, you keep it on the ground and push back. If you do lift up and rake again, you’re going to collect a lot of thatch in short order. Keeping it pressed on the ground will pull the thatch right off.

Use the sharper side to cut up the soil for seed and other stuff.

Wear gloves and take breaks. It’s hard work.

Looks like for removing moss from grass yard.

It’s for hoeing it up. Just like every other thing ever invented.
